12:46 am - Haiti Relief stuff
|
So ...
As those of you who know me know, my time lately is kind of eaten up by 10,000 annoying things I don't really want to do ever, and then I spend three hours on the internet every night with email and what have you and think, God, those are three hours I should have been, I don't know, doing something useful. Like eating or sleeping, or someting. I used to be able to come home from work, eat, and go straight to bed without any dilly dallying, but now I like the dilly, and occasionally I dally, and this is not the point.
The point? I suggest either MSF or Red Cross for donations to Haiti, which is where I'm going to donate, but if you want to add some fun to your assistance, there's a comm called help_haiti in which you can donate money in return for fanworks of your choice--it's more of an auction, but a totally cool win-win type concept. I'd offer to write for it, but given that work's been eating up a good portion of my time lately, and the fact that I get very little done at the best of times, that would be an exceedingly bad idea, although I might bid on a few things.
There are other ficathons around in support of the relief effort, and I found this one: http://ewinfic.livejournal.com/73307.html?view=1380955#t1380955 which is small and looks fun, and is scheduled for Saturday. I think it's pan-fandom, and looking for participants.
Um, that's it for now ... for all of you in Texas, I am thinking of you and wishing desperately that I was there too.

3:17 pm - Seriously?
|
So ... I'm making ginger tea. I do a google search for the recipe, and find a six step one. Oh, goody! I think. An elaborate recipe! Something that will be far better than my simple boring version (which is basically, put the ginger in the water and boil, and then add stuff--I add chamomile and mint, along with lemon and honey) which is rather boring. Yay, I think.
Because in every cookbook I've ever read, six simple steps usually involves sifting, separating eggs, and using pastry knives or candy or meat thermometers or a bunch of other gadgets I don't really have, even though the recipe keeps saying how simple and fast everything is. But I digress.)
It was actually *less* complicated than mine. One of the steps was, I'm not even kidding, "Boil the water".
Oh, internet. I love you, but seriously. Sometimes, you make me wonder about how stupid you think we all are (No, don't answer that.)

Well,
I am very thrilled that the U.N. finally passed a resolution to do something about the horrific situation in Gaza. I cannot believe, however, that Canada is supporting the Israeli government in their current actions. I realize the issue is complicated. I do. I realize too that I am, in terms of background and personal affliations, somewhat biased.
But when the deathtoll is like 700 something (including 100s of children) against 10 soldiers, or something similar, I don't understand how you can not just fail to condemn, but actually support, such an initiative. I just don't get it. When U.N. schools--and I don't really care that they are sheltering a couple of soldiers when you know that those buildings are housing children--and aid workers are being bombed, I just don't get how this can be the action of a so-called civilized state. I don't get it.
I have friends that are Israeli, that support Israel whole-heartedly. There are things we don't talk about, and at some level, I feel, sometimes, that perhaps we, who are friends, should be able to discuss these things, when we expect those deeply involved and invested to be able to do so. But we don't. We just don't.

8:24 pm - Birthday!
|
I am breaking my well-established and highly comfortable lukerdom for the very important birthday wishes (albeit late) to the much loved, intelligent and interesting and thoughtful and gifted Maystone--and I'm trying to be all positive here, and so, for today, I hope you had a very, very good day. You deserve one today, and I hope the future holds many, many more.
*hugs*

7:48 pm - For I am a moron ...
|
I give up ...
I got a pair of absolutely *gorgeous* silver bunny earrings on Friday, which was a day I needed something good.
I totally and absolutely love them.
I totally and absolutely cannot match RL name to screenname, which makes me 10 kinds of loser, I know. Also because the name is quite familiar, and I'm thinking, if I could just think about this, it will come to me.
But it is not, and not just because my brain has taken a hiatus--I did go back to work for a half day today, though, although I did little of anything, really. Tomorrow will hopefully be better. I just feel completely ... I don't know. Like I can't possibly actually do anything of use. I know I'm just being whiny, and keep wanting to kick myself in the ass, but it's not working. I also hate that I'm starting the new year being whiny ...
Except, I got these beautiful earrings, and I adore them, but can absolutely not wear them until I can properly gush at the sender of same, and thank them profusely. So please ... tell me who you are, and feel free to call me an idiot? Thank you!

and oh! In amusing things, I am terribly amused by the fact that every time I click on a "may not be appropriate for minors" link on my flist, it turns out to be nothing more than someone saying how their shoe wouldn't fit or how irritated they are at snails, or something.
Sometimes, it's even a meme about what which of the seven dwarves you'd be.
I'm sure it's considered inappropriate somewhere ...

Just a quick post to say thanks to whoever it was who gave me an LJ gift! It's all pretty and sparkly, and I've never gotten one before, and it made me feel all pretty and sparkly--and loved and appreciated and obviously, a little gushy :-). So thank you, anonymous wonderful person!

6:56 pm - Lest we forget ...
|
Yesterday, August 6, marked the anniversary of the first time an atomic bomb was used in warfare, killing, both directly and indirectly, over a hundred thousand people (estimates vary). Days later, on August 9, a second bomb would detonate in Nagasaki, killing thousands more.
Sometimes, its good to take a moment, and remember.

9:30 pm - Random things ...
|
I am in a random sort of mood, so I'm doing a Random!post. I've been feeling lately like my entire life is being conducted in that period, y'know, ten minutes after you just wrote an exam and then remember all the right answers and that those were not the ones you actually wrote down? Yeah.
But here's someone else who may never realize that, although sometimes he unwittingly gets it right (I have the Bushisms calendar, and I thought I'd share Monday's pearl of wisdom from the current U.S. president with you):
"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."
--Washington D.C., August 5, 2004
Hmmm.
In other wrongness, I must say--and I'm not usually all that big on political correctness, really--that I find the ads for new film "Partition" almost, well, offensive. I mean, they've cast, in a movie about a really important time in Indian history (yes, a fluff movie, but still) two very white actresses, and not even *good* actresses. Really, from a country of almost a billion people, which has the world's largest film industry, you couldn't find two decent actresses that met your not-exactly-exacting standards? You really had to cast a couple of mediocre white actresses and ask them to speak in fake Indian accents? Really?
I don't know why I just find this highly annoying, but I do. Maybe because I so rarely see East Indian actresses in film or TV, and I grew up in a time when I would've loved to see it, when India and Indian culture were very very far from being cool. Maybe because there are fabulous Indian actresses that I'm sure would've loved this type of role, and then they cast ... well, I should shut up now. I'm sure there is a backstory or something, and I'm ranting based on an ad I chanced to see, without knowing any facts. And Ben Kingsley did a great job with Ghandhi, and that didn't bother me at all. I guess if they'd cast like a really good actress, it actually wouldn't bother me here either. But Ghandhi was made years ago, and today even I who barely pay attention can name a whack of great, beautiful actresses who would've done as good if not a better job than any job Neve Campbell or that chick from Smallville could. But ... maybe there's some very reasonable reason I just don't get. Maybe I should stop my incoherent ranting now and go back to watching my bunny have immense fun playing in the piles of laundry I ought to do ...
current mood: annoyed

I saw Pan Labyrinth tonight, which is really very good--it's one of those fairytale allegory type tales, and it was very very well done. It's not an unhappy ending, but its very dark--bordering on horror flick dark, and it almost is, depending on your perspective. It's also a violent movie, and not sanitized Hollywood violence--there's a realistic non-shying away edge to the violence that is very European--you know how the BBC shows the Iraq war with dead bodies, and the American media tends to never show an actual corpse just report on how many died and show devesatated buildings? Like that. Yeah.
At one point the audience laughed. And it wasn't funny--it was just awkward tension release. And it was, all things considering, a non-violent scene. Not even much blood.
So, yeah, intense movie. A chase scene that had me nearly crawling out of my seat. Beautifully shot. The child lead is really amazing. Highly recommended, if you don't mind violent or dark.

4:29 pm - Happy New Year

11:56 pm - Well, that was unexpected.
|
A friend of mine, a long time friend from my XF days, called my bluff.
I said I'd do the Nano thing if she would, knowing that (a) she writes slowly and self-edits constantly and (b) she is really busy, having just moved and having a home full of teenagers.
She called my bluff.
Ask me how screwed I am.
Plus, I have to work on something I'll admit to.
How do I get myself into these situations? How?
At least the trick or treaters are cute, and look at me kindly, because I am bribing them with candy. (The moral of Halloween is that bribery works. Don't let no one tell you different.)

12:17 am - This post is shallow and meaningless!
|
Because I think it is high time I had a shallow, meaningless post in here.
Picked up Premiere, I think it was, magazine for a flight--mostly because, Hugh Jackman is hot.
Hugh Jackman in leather on a motorcycle? If I can get that for $5, dude, is that really a decision, or a foregone conclusion?
So definitely on my freebie five, it's not even funny.
(P.S. Still need to know how to get into an XP account without the password, if anyone has any suggestions).

8:19 pm - I am a moron
|
but more so than usual.
I got home, was exhausted, put together a bowl of cereal and went outside to maybe write or something, and of course.
I spilled cereal and milk over my laptop keyboard. I spilled it about a half hour ago, and don't know if this affects only the laptop or the harddrive or what, and so far it is working, but I don't know for how long, and am worried in the morning it will be toast. Does anyone know of anything I can do except pray that it is not completely screwed?
Help?
