12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

Assuming that "adaptation" refers to the sort of AU where you recapitulate the plot arc and character roles of your source text with the characters from another fandom, then, yes, although never at the length of an entire book or movie.

Gerard and Rapunzel is a retelling of Rapunzel with the My Chem boys (version 2.0, with Bob). Also with 100% more genderqueerness, threesomes, and approximations of Medieval Christianity than I have ever seen in a telling of the fairy tale.

The Dead Speak: Charlie Eppes is a pastiche of Douglas Coupland's vignettes called "The Dead Speak" from Life After God--you can read the originals on this hideously ad-riddled website if you scroll down near the bottom of the page. They are even more gruesome than mine, although mine fits in an incest pairing right before all the apocalypse and horrible death. Yay?

Off to See the Wizard is an adaptation of the Stargate Atlantis episode "Grace Under Pressure" (which itself was a sort of adaptation from the SG-1 episode "Grace") in which a concussed character in trouble (Greg from CSI, in my version) hallucinates someone he knows (and has the hots for) who helps him solve the problem he faces (Gil).

(Now I really want to write "Grace Under Pressure" and "The Dead Speak" fic in every fandom, and by every fandom I mean Generation Kill.)

Ahem. There is also the one that I THOUGHT I was writing as an adaptation and which I assume no one in their right mind would ever recognize as such. When I was a kid I used to watch the Sunday afternoon Doris Day/Rock Hudson movies with my mom, and I remember many of them vaguely but fondly, and at some point after getting into slash fandom it occurred to me to try to recast Send Me No Flowers (to be clear: a screwball romantic comedy) as a Due South story. The essential premise is that Rock Hudson is a hypochondriac who becomes convinced that he's really dying this time, and so he starts making plans for his wife so that she won't be lonely when he's gone. Hijinks, as they say, ensue.

I honestly don't remember much about the movie beyond the premise--I mean, I vividly recall the bit in the doctor's office where Rock Hudson becomes convinced that he's going to die, and then everything else is a bit of a blur.

So that was my premise: Ray Kowalski becomes convinced he's going to die, and he has to make plans, particularly as regard making sure Fraser will be okay without him. Um, and the first thing I did was take out all the comedy, because that is generally what I do with any premise that is supposed to have humor built into it. So it wound up being That Good Night: A Death Story, which is surely one of the worst things anyone has ever done to a perfectly innocent Sixties screwball comedy.

More drabbles from last week's requests, once again somewhat out of order due to the random striking of inspiration.

skylark_cee wanted CSI - A case that involves a hard drive is full of Numb3rs D/C incestfic. Neither I nor Nick could quite get our brains around that one:

UnmentionableCollapse )

lilac_one asked for Colby/David "That is one annoying asshole."

RiledCollapse )

justbreathe80 requested John/Rodney, honey.

BitterCollapse )

For reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, strangecobwebs thought it would be funny to request John and Rodney discussing child custody laws of certain planets.

Taken InCollapse )

gryphons_lair asked for Ivan babysitting for Miles. I doubt this is quite what she meant, but Ivan can be sneaky like that. Takes place during Diplomatic Immunity.

In Loco ParentisCollapse )

iscaris asked for Don/Colby!!!1111!!

I'm home from my whirlwind tour of the Midwest (and southern Ontario)! I collected a truly alarming amount of loot in Toronto (why is it that I cannot walk into an HMV without COMPLETELY LOSING MY SHIT? WHY?) and shiny vid DVDs from vividcon and, at long last, a colander! I saw Clerks II and the entire first season of Dead Like Me! I managed to avoid having my toothpaste, deodorant, lip balm, and eye drops confiscated! On several occasions, I ate three meals in one day! I wrote porn on a train and the morning after on a plane!

I had a fantastic time hanging out with giddygeek and merryish and just_eunice and cesperanza and astolat and cmshaw and justacat and sanj and I met vagabondage and renenet and sisabet and nevermind98 and amireal and trelkez and lovelokest and bkwyrm and lots of other people who I am totally forgetting! I watched many many AWESOME VIDS! I did not drink nearly enough beer or stay up nearly late enough! I ate a lot of cookies! I contributed to the pizza guy's daughter's college fund! I missed my home and my bed and my flist and everyone who wasn't at the con!

And now I have to take a shower and go to bed, because I am still faintly glittery from Club Vivid, and oh dear god I have to go to work tomorrow morning.

Also, I reread my printed-out copy of Ghost on the plane, and boy I sure do wish there was more of that story...

Having consulted my chat logs, I discovered that this story came out of telling iuliamentis a dream I'd had in which Greg Sanders and Laura Roslin, cylon-like characterbots, appeared on the later seasons of Firefly, which I had not seen but Iulia had. Comparatively, therefore, it's actually very coherent.

With big thanks to Iulia for beta and for finding the piece of story in my rambling about some dream I had.

Off to See the Wizard (21k)
"It should be like The Wizard of Oz," Greg said. "Everyone should be here."

I celebrated my last Saturday of not having to go to work for the next three months by having Big Gay Movie Day with textualchauvini and strangecobwebs. The lineup was Velvet Goldmine, Hard Core Logo, and Wilby Wonderful, in that order. Movie day was a big success, as I got to see Ewan McGregor's dangly bits, Auvi and Strange got to see HCL and WW for the first time and can now read all the lovely fic (or, hey, write some!) and I have almost completely stopped writing post-movie fic for The Cutting Edge in my head.

In other news of fics that seemed like a great idea last night, I've posted a new story for the Phobia challenge over at csi_flashfic. Failure, Death, Wooded Areas at Night is Warrick-centric gen, post-Grave Danger, so titled because it's easier to pronounce than kakorrhaphiophobia. Now doesn't that sound like fun?

I have just posted my first effort at csi_flashfic, which is, incidentally, the first story in the first challenge on the shiny new comm!

My story for the First Challenge is First Things First, a spot of Nick/Gil set vaguely in season six.

You should go read it, and then you should join csi_flashfic, so you can read lots of Firsts in the next two weeks, and/or write your own! The challenge runs until the 17th, so there's still plenty of time! And if you're even a little bit local to me, you should know I have the first five seasons on DVD now, so I am happy to show you some! Or lots! Just say the word!

I wrote this a couple of days ago, because something along these lines had been rattling around in my head since I saw the third episode of the second season of CSI, and because one of the lines of dialogue got stuck in my head and would not be removed by any other means but writing it down. So!

post-episode for CSI 2x03, "Overload."
Gen, G-rated. Catherine said they needed to talk: she meant, Gil needed to listen.

I actually woke up this morning, stared at the ceiling for a bit thinking over what I was going to do with my Saturday, and then rolled over and realized I was in bed with a partially-written CSI fic.

*facepalm*

Current Mood: (not 'ew,' exactly.)
Current Music: (more like, *sigh*)

During the 17th consecutive episode of CSI viewed in a less-than-24-hour-period:

dsudis: Oh, Nicky. You're so fine.
merryish: You have been hanging out with Grissom too much.

As if there were any such thing as hanging out with Grissom too much. Honestly.

Also, Merry wants me to tell you all lurid stories of how she abuses me.

...

...

She keeps offering me COFFEE, people. COFFEE! Do I drink coffee? NO. And when I say no? SHE OFFERS ME TEA.

60,150 words. 134 pages. I think last time I said interesting things had finally started happening, but now it's REALLY getting fun.

Earlier this week, I made a bargain with myself: I said I wouldn't start watching Season Two of CSI until I hit 60,000 words on this fic. I'm sure you can all guess how that turned out, so mostly I'm pleased that I've only watched the first ten episodes of S2 at this point, and not, say, finished it and moved on to Season Three.
