In an effort to study the effect of Neovossia indica on embryo culture of wheat [Triticum aestivu... more In an effort to study the effect of Neovossia indica on embryo culture of wheat [Triticum aestivum (L.) em Theil], 17, 20 and 23 days old embryos were excised from immature grains of different wheat genotypes. These were cuitured on modified MS medium in presence and absence of the pathogen. The pathogen had no effect on callus initiation and callusing frequency. Some of the 23 days old embryos from the wheat genotypes formed a circular inhibition zone (IZ) around themselves where no growth of pathogen could be seen. The formation of IZ was observed around every embryo excised from mature grains and cultured in presence of the pathogen. The mean diameter of IZ was found to be 3.19 cm in resistant, 2.26 cm in susceptible and 1.62 cm in highly susceptible genotypes showing coefficient of infection less than 5%, 5 to 20% and more than 20%, respectively at adult plant stage.

Background:The present study reports myeloablative total body irradiation (TBI) on an isocentrica... more Background:The present study reports myeloablative total body irradiation (TBI) on an isocentrically mounted linac by laying the patient on the floor and management of abutting radiation fields and partial shielding of lungs. Dosimetrical efficacy of this novel technique was evaluated.Materials and methods:In this retrospective study, dosimetrical parameters from TBI plans on whole-body CT scans of 46 patients were analysed. The prescribed dose to TBI was 12 Gy in six fractions delivered over a period of 3 days for myeloablative conditioning. TrueBeam STx platform Linac (Varian Medical Systems Inc., Palo Alto, CA, USA) was used to deliver opposing fields. Radiation fields were abutted to form a single large field using an arithmetic formula at source-to-skin-distance of 210 cm.Results:Discrepancies in dose calculated by treatment planning system were within 1·6% accuracy, and dose profile at the junction of abutting radiation fields was reproduced within 3·0% accuracy. The real treatment time for each patient was ~30 minutes/fraction. Monitor unit was weighted for multiple sub-fields to achieve dose homogeneity within 5·0% throughout the whole body, and the mean dose to lung was ≤10 Gy.Conclusion:Our abutting radiation field technique for myeloablative TBI is feasible in any existing linac bunker. ‘Island-blocking’ is feasible in this technique using multi-leaf collimator. This technique is cost-effective as it does not require any costly equipment than the readily available equipment in any radiotherapy facility. In general, TBI requires laborious planning procedures and spacious linac bunkers; this novel technique has the potential to change previously held notions.

Plants were treated separately and in combination with all the three microorganisms. Highest reduction in germination was observed in the plants treated with A. niger either alone or in combination with other microorganisms.

Fungi were isolated from rhizosphere and rhizoplane of tomato c.v. Pusa Ruby at plantation and harvest time during two growing seasons i.e. March & September. Higher number of fungi was isolated in first growing season. Microbial activity was more at early stages of growth of plants. Deuteromycetes were the dominant group throughout the studies, saprophytic and antagonistic fungi were higher during harvest.

Biodiversity Conservation with Special Reference to Medicinal Climbers: Present Scenario, Challenges, Strategies, and Policies

In India, they are widely distributed from Nilgiris to Himalayas to Andaman Nicobar Islands. Phylogenetically, climbers are found in over 125 families of fl owering plants as well as among several fern groups and even in one signifi cant gymnosperm genus, Gnetum. They are largely used by all divisions of the population either directly as folk medications or indirectly in the preparation of recent pharmaceuticals. Climbers also play a vital role in horticulture and agriculture. Thus, people depend on climbers for several purposes like for medications, non-timber forest products, food, etc. Nowadays, plant-based pharmaceutical industries have been increased due to various advantages of plant-based medicine over the synthetic ones. Wild plants are the good source to provide the raw materials for such industries. Unfortunately, a huge number of medicinal climbers have been listed in Red Data Book and are on the verge of extinction due to unsustainable collection of plants, habitat loss, climate change, and industrialization coupled with urbanization. Thus, biodiversity conservation is an utmost concern globally. Various strategies are in use for biodiversity conservation such as in situ strategy, ex situ strategy, reduction of anthropogenic pressures, and rehabilitation of threatened species. Protection and preservation of germplasm within national parks, biosphere reserves, and sanctuaries are the examples of in situ conservation. However, it is not an effective means of conservation. In this regard, biotechnological approach like plant tissue culture technique proved to be fruitful. Plant tissue culture can be applied to the rapid propagation and ex situ conservation of rare, endemic, and endangered medicinal plants as explained by several authorities. An investigation was undertaken to study the effect of different carbon and nitrogen sources on t... more An investigation was undertaken to study the effect of different carbon and nitrogen sources on the growth and antagonistic properties of Trichoderma viridae and Trichothecium roseum. Mycelial growth and phenols in the culture filtrates of fungi were estimated. Cumulative hatching and percentage mortality of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) juveniles were observed at 2, 3, 5 and 7 days. Results indicated varying effect of nutritive sources on the mycelial growth, glucose and Potassium Nitrate were a most preferred while starch and urea were least preferred carbon and nitrogen sources. Hatching and mortality also varied with the different carbon and nitrogen sources. Though all sources proved inhibitory, most effective were fructose and lysine in case of T. viridae and rhamnose and glycine for T. roseum. It was observed that a direct correlation between the amount of phenols in the culture filtrate of fungi and its adverse effect on the hatching and mortality of juvenile of root-knot nematode.

Ex situ conservation of plants is the conservation and maintenance of different plant species out... more Ex situ conservation of plants is the conservation and maintenance of different plant species outside their natural habitat, in the form of whole plants, seeds, pollens etc. Gardens, specially the botanical, are one of the most widely implemented methods for ex situ conservation of plants. Sri Tikaram Kanya mahavidyalaya is a foremost center of girls' education in Aligarh city in Uttar Pradesh. College campus spreads in 1.56 hectare area and has many gardens and lawns including one rich and diverse botanical garden having an assemblage of indigenous and exotic plant species. These gardens provide the protected housing and care to a number of plant species some of which are endangered. They also have an educational value especially for students in botany courses where they study different aspects of plant kingdom. Campus accommodates approximately 220 species belonging to the different divisions of plant kingdom. There are 32 large trees, 49 small trees and shrubs, 13 vines & climbers, 20 herbs and 6 palms. Ecological groups include succulents & xerophytes (18 species), hydrophytes (5 species), parasite (1 species) and epiphytes (1 species). College campus harbors 37 weed plants and 50 seasonal plants annually. Majority of these plants are from the division Angiosperms (211) out of which177 are dicots and 36 are monocots belonging to approximately 45 families. Leguminosae, , Apocynaceae , Asteraceae , Rutaceae and Euphorbiaceae are some of the more common families. Euphorbia comes out as largest genus with 7 species. Other plant divisions also make their presence including six genera of gymnosperms, 4 genera of pteridophytes and one genera from bryophytes campus. It can be concluded that well maintained college gardens are contributing significantly in the ex situ conservation of phyto-diversity along with study of systematics

Recent figures of female sex ratio in the northern India are shocking especially in a civil socie... more Recent figures of female sex ratio in the northern India are shocking especially in a civil society, which is based on egalitarian values and where in constitution ideals of social justice and equality are enshrined. The census of 2001 showed a wide gap between male and female child of 0-6 yrs age group is drawing our attention to the fact that our society is suffering from some serious malaise. This decline in sex ratio is the result of " Female Foeticide " a term applied for termination of female foetus. Gender bias is deep rooted in our society down the centuries but now it begins from womb itself. Modern techniques like ultra sonography and amniocentesis, which were originally meant to ensure the health of child and mother, are misused for sex determination and selective abortion.
