I had been home for two hours, when I opened the front door to find Reid standing on the welcome mat. "Reid...," I said, surprised, "Hi."
"Hey," Reid answered, looking off to the side.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, glad that he was.
"I, uh..." He shook his head and sort of smirked and tapped his left hand against his thigh. "Yeah......this was a bad idea...I should have called first." He turned to walk away from the door, but I grabbed his arm.
"Reid. You're here. Come in..."
He turned around and looked at my hand on his arm and then up to my eyes. He gave a half hearted nod. He stepped into the foyer and looked around awkwardly.
"Come on...sit down," I said tugging on Reid's arm as I headed toward the couch.
"Where's your family?"
"Out...Natalie had a science fair orientation at school, and then dad was meeting them so they could all grab a bite to eat together. " I sat down. Reid remained standing.
"Did you eat?" Reid asked.
"Yeah. You?"
"Yeah..."
"You gonna sit?" I asked.
"No." He looked back at the door.
I laughed. Oh my God; he's nervous. I stood back up. "Follow me," I said, and walked to the kitchen.
When we entered the kitchen, I pointed at the table. "Sit." Reid sat. I opened up the fridge and said, "Boston cream or blueberry? Pies, I mean. Both of them were made by my grandmother, and they are equally incredible. Which one do you want?"
"Both?" Reid answered, as if the answer was obvious. He smiled. I was really starting to like that smile.
I pulled out both pies and a gallon of milk. I put the pies and milk on the table and retrieved plates, silverware and cups from the cabinets. I cut a large piece of each pie and put them on separate plates. "Which one?" I asked, gesturing with the pie cutter toward the plates. Reid slid the blueberry pie in front of him, using one finger. "Good choice," I said, filling a glass of milk and placing it in front of Reid.
"Thanks," Reid said, softly. He picked up a fork and dug in. I sat down and loaded my own fork up with the boston cream pie.
"Oh, fuck me..." Reid drawled out after one bite. Now, I'm not a fan of cursing. I don't say swear words much myself, and I'm not really fond of other people using them either, but Reid saying THAT word in THAT way? Fuck me, indeed. I dropped my fork, swallowed, leaned forward, and kissed Reid hard...because, really, that's all I'd wanted to do since I'd opened the door to him ten minutes earlier. His mouth was sweet from the pie, and he brought his hand up and tugged on my hair. He was a good kisser. I felt it everywhere. He sucked the chocolate from my tongue and moaned softly into my mouth. And then he said my name, just a whisper really, and kissed me more.
"Oh my God," Faith said, as she entered the ktichen.
I pulled away from Reid and wiped the back of my hand across my lips. "Faith!"
Reid quirked an eyebrow and picked his fork back up, as he pulled my plate of pie in front of him. Faith smiled and jokingly fanned herself.
A few seconds later, my mother entered the kitchen. "Oh. Hello, Dr. Oliver. What are you doing here?"
"He's making out with Luke," Faith said, smirking.
"What?" my mother asked, increduously.
"Faith!" I said, looking at my mom and then at Reid, who raised his fork in acknowledgement to my mother before digging back in.
And then my dad walked in. This was just getting better and better, wasn't it?
"Dr. Oliver. Hello. What brings you by?" My father asked.
Reid started to say something but my mother answered instead. "Apparantely, he's dating our son."
"Mom!" I raised my voice, embarrassed. "We're not dating...we're just..." What are we? I looked at Reid. He smiled a little and put another forkful of pie in his mouth. I looked at his sweet-covered lips and then back up to his eyes. And I lost my train of thought.
"Damn," Faith said from behind my father. "This guy on guy stuff is pretty hot...even if one of them is my brother."
Reid coughed.
Dad sighed.
Mom glared at Faith.
I rose from my seat and picked up the two plates.
"Hey, I'm not done with that," Reid protested, trying to grab one last bite of pie. I walked the plates to the sink. "I guess I am done," Reid said, walking up behind me and putting his fork in the sink.
I turned to my parents. "I'm going to show Reid my room."
"You are?" Reid asked, suprised, as I took his hand and started walking toard the living room.
"I don't think that's a good idea," my mother said, but my father cut her off by saying, "Lily, he's a grown man...if he wants to show someone his room, he can show him his room."
Reid glanced back at my parents but then followed me. As we ascended the stairs, he asked, "Are you sure this is okay? I don't want to break your parents' rules." He laughed. "Shit, I feel like a teenager again..."
"It's fine...Noah and I.......................................
We approached Ethan's room. He was in playing with Matchbox cars on the floor. "Hi, Eth..." I said, standing in the doorway. "Where's Nat?"
"We dropped her off at Amber's house before we went to Al's so they can do some homework together. She's eating dinner there. They're going to bring her home at 9:00."
"Oh...ok. Pretty soon then. Ethan, this is my friend...um...Dr. Oliver." I turned to Reid. "Reid, this is my brother, Ethan."
"Hi, there, Ethan..." Reid said, seeming unsure he should enter Ethan's room.
"Ethan," I said, "Dr. Oliver's the one who operated on Noah."
Ethan stood up and approached Reid in the doorway and wrapped his arms around his waist in a tight, surprising hug.
"Cool! Luke said Noah got his head cut open and it fixed him. You must be a really good doctor. You should get an A," Ethan said, looking up at Reid.
Reid laughed and patted Ethan's back awkwardly. "Thanks...it was nothing."
I tapped Ethan on the back so that he'd let go of Reid.
Reid eyed him up and down. "How old are you? 17? You in highschool?"
"No!" Ethan said, laughing, clearly amused. "I'm seven."
"Seven? Are you sure?"
"Yes, sir."
"What grade are you in?"
"I'm in second grade. I have Mrs. Beecher. Do you know her?"
"No."
"She smells like lemons." Ethan scrunched up his nose.
"You look like your brother," Reid observed.
"Yeah...everyone says that. They call me Little Luke." And then Ethan immediately took the conversation in a different direction. "Are you Luke's boyfriend?"
Reid coughed. "Uh........no, I.......uh...."
"Because he said you were his friend, and you're a boy..."
"He's just a regular friend," I said to Ethan, trying to stop the interrogation. "Like your friend, Corey."
"Oh!" Ethan said excitedly. "So, you're best friends!"
Reid smiled at Ethan, his brow furrowed.
"No, that's not exactly it either," I said, rubbing the back of my neck.
"So, what *is* it?" Reid asked, looking over at me teasingly.
"Luke likes boys," Ethan offered, trying to clear things up in his own childlike way. "Most boys like girls. But some boys like boys, and Luke likes boys. I don't like girls. But I don't like boys either. I like my friends, but I don't want to kiss them and stuff. Luke says when I'm older, I'll figure out who I like. Who do you like, Dr. Oliver?"
"I no,......um....yeah, I like boys," Reid said, not looking very sure of himself. "Men," he clarified. "You know...grown up boys." I had to laugh when he looked over at me, as if to say help me, please.
"So, you're gay too. Like Luke. And Noah."
I closed my eyes against Noah's name. But Reid just answered. "Yes, I'm gay."
"It's not bad to say, 'gay,' unless you say it to be mean," Ethan informed Reid, his chest puffing out as he looked over at me.
"This is true..." Reid agreed.
"Luke says that if something is stupid, you should just call it stupid and not call it gay."
Reid nodded. "Luke's a smart guy."
"Do you like Luke?" Ethan asked, and I suddenly felt like I wanted to sink into the floor.
Reid stuck out his bottom lip and looked up at the ceiling, as if he was concentrating. And then he looked right at me with a steel blue gaze. "Yes. I like Luke. I like him a lot."
Ethan giggled. "Luke's nice."
"Yes, he is," Reid agreed, which for some reason sent up a million butterflies in my stomach, and I wanted desperately to kiss him again. Or run away.
Ethan tugged on my shirt. "Luke, do you like Dr. Oliver?"
I'm gonna kill him. My eyes never left Reid's. "Yeah. He's okay." I smiled and Reid smiled back.
"You should be boyfriends," Ethan surmised.
I shook my head and looked at Ethan. "Okay, buddy, what YOU should do is get ready for bed so that dad can come tuck you in before he leaves."
"Are you having a sleepover?" Ethan asked me, innocently.
"No way. It's a school night. You know the rules. No sleepovers on a school night." I looked at Reid, who brought his fist to his mouth to hide his smile. I held out my arms to Ethan. "Give me a hug."
Ethan lunged at me and wrapped his arms around me tightly. "Night, Luke. Love you."
"Night, Eth...I love you too. Sleep good. Go pee before bed, wash your hands, and brush your teeth, okay?"
"Okay." Ethan turned to Reid and hugged him around the waist again. "Night, Dr. Oliver. Love you."
"Oh! Okay. Yeah. Goodnight." Reid looked a hundred kinds of uncomfortable.
I tugged his arm to follow me down the hall, as Ethan headed the other way to the bathroom. "Kids, huh?" I said, chuckling. "Sorry, about that...nothing like being put on the spot."
"It's okay," he said, as we stepped into my room, and I closed the door. "He's a cute kid. You guys seem close, even with the huge age difference."
"Yeah, we are."
"I think it's cool that your family is obviously very open with him about..........things. I can tell he's a future activist," Reid joked. "I can see him on the playground doing sensitivity training." Reid smiled.
"Yeah," I said, laughing.
We fell into silence, and Reid began looking around my room. "System of a Down AND Lady Gaga, huh?" he asked, looking at the two posters above my bed.
I shrugged.
"You should listen to my I-Pod sometime...I think you'd like it..." he said.
I wondered exactly what was on his I-Pod and continued to watch him nose around my room.
He looked through the books on my bookcase and the magazines on my nightstand. Then he went over to my desk. He looked at the pictures I had tacked onto a corkboard above it. Facebook was up on my computer and he scrolled down through my news feed for a couple of minutes. I didn't stop him. Afterwards, he picked up a framed picture of Noah and me and glanced at it for a few seconds. "You miss him?" Reid asked, as he put the picture back down.
"I miss the idea of him," I answered truthfully. "But no...I don't miss feeling insufficient."
Reid stepped forward and kissed me lightly on the lips. He then brought his hand up to the back of my head and kissed me harder. I felt his eyelashes flutter against my cheek as he blinked. I pulled back to look into his blue, blue eyes. And then I found myself kissing him again and pushing him down onto the bed. I climbed on top of him, our mouths devouring each other as our bodies pressed together. I was hard, and I could feel that he was too.
We made out like crazy. I have no idea how long we sucked on each other's tongues and lips, breathing hard, panting into each other's mouths. Did I mention he was a good kisser? I mean like really, really good. I couldn't remember the last time I'd been kissed like this. Maybe I'd never been kissed like this. I tried to remember what it was like kissing Noah, but the memory was chased away by Reid's soft but firm lips tugging on mine, and his warm, sweet tongue. His hands were on the sides of my face, holding me , his fingers dipping into my ears every now and then, tugging on my earlobes, threading into my hair. I'm pretty sure that I was moaning as I started moving against him, the friction so good that I thought I might die. I ran my hands over his shoulders and biceps, gripping him, caressing him, wanting him. I kissed his jaw. I sucked on his neck. He arched up against me, lowered his hands to my ass and pulled me harder against him, growling deep in his chest.
I gasped and rolled off him, all of it too intense...too much...too good. It was happening so fast, and I couldn't catch my breath. Reid tried to pull me back to him, but I pushed his hands away.
Reid was breathing hard. It was so sexy. "Ya know," he teased, "Katie doesn't have that "no sleepovers on a school night" rule at her house...we could go over there and..."
I shook my head "no," and put some distance between us on the bed as we both tried to catch our breath.
"It's okay to want what you want, Luke," Reid said, as he threaded his fingers into mine, holding my hand. I didn't answer him, but ran my thumb over his knuckles. "Even if it's not logical," he continued, "..even if it's not something you thought you wanted."
Is he talking about me or himself? I sighed. He was right. I did want him. I'd never been so hungry for someone in my life. But I shook my head "no" again. "We don't even know each other," I rationalized, fighting the urge to pin him to the mattress and rut up against him until we both came.
"Sure we do," Reid answered, looking straight into my eyes. Unwavering. He was right. We did know each other. We might not have known each other's middle names or favorite colors, but we saw each other in ways that maybe nobody else did. So quickly. So unexpectedly. And what we saw was fueling a mutual physical fire as it struggled against blossoming into something else, something that threatened to consume us. And looking into his eyes, I knew he was right there with me.
There was a soft rap on my bedroom door. "Luke?" My mother's voice.
"Yes. Come in," I said.
My mother opened the door and peeked her head inside. Her eyes dropped to my hand, resting lazily in Reid's between us on the bed. "Luke, dad left a little bit ago. I'm headed to bed. Be sure to lock up when Reid leaves, okay?"
Please, don't come over here and kiss me goodnight. Please, please, please. And she didn't, thank God. "I will. Goodnight, Mom."
"Goodnight, baby. Goodnight, Reid," she said before turning around.
"Goodnight, Ms. Walsh."
I closed my eyes briefly and opened them to find Reid looking at me, smiling. He leaned over and kissed me lightly. "Your mom left the door open."
"I know," I said, smiling at the warmness on my lips. "She's subtle, isn't she?"
