8:11 pm - 7 Ways to Grow Flowers
dorromon4756 7 Ways to Grow Flowers
 by: Johnny Greenthumb
Flowering landscape trees are the crown jewels of the yard. Perhaps no other plants, individually, can have as great an impact on how a yard looks in spring. Browse the articles to which I've linked below for information on particular varieties of flowering landscape trees. Pictures are included.
Crape Myrtles: Landscape Trees of the South
A popular choice in flowering landscape trees for Southerners, crape myrtles have a long blooming period (mid-summer to fall). The blooming clusters of these flowering landscape trees come in pink, white, red and lavender. The clusters appear on the tips of new wood. Northerners can sometimes get away with treating these flowering landscape trees as perennials that die back in winter but come back in spring.
Trees
Not all specimens with a weeping habit are flowering landscape trees, but this article looks at several weeping varieties that do bloom, headed by four types of cherry.
Saucer Magnolias
The size and shape of the blooms are what suggested the common name for these flowering landscape trees. Want a specimen with a brilliant bloom as big as a saucer? Access information on these beauties here.
Rose of Sharon
Although some people think of it as a landscape "tree" (because it gets tall and can be pruned so as to have a single trunk), rose of sharon is, in fact, a flowering shrub. The fact that it blooms relatively late -- and for a long time -- makes it a valuable plant for those looking to distribute their yard's color display throughout the growing season.
Top 10 List of Flowering Landscape Trees and Shrubs for Spring |
This article features information on ten flowering landscape trees and shrubs that brighten our spring seasons. Included are redbud, callery pear and crabapple.
Hawthorn: Late-Blooming Landscape Trees
This article offers information on Washington hawthorn trees, which are perhaps most valued for the time at which they bloom (late spring to early summer). Many of the popular flowering specimens bloom earlier in the spring, and while their blossoms are pleasant sights for eyes sore from winter's barrenness, they desert us too quickly!

2:11 pm - How To Eliminate Your Puppy's Love of Nipping
dorromon4756 How To Eliminate Your Puppy's Love of Nipping
 by: David Silva
If you've ever been nipped by a puppy, you know those teeth can be as sharp as ice picks. While other dogs generally have thick skin and can handle a nip relatively undamaged, we humans are not quite so fortunate. And yes, a puppy bite can definitely break skin.
So how do you put a stop to your puppy's nipping?
First, it helps to understand that he's not biting maliciously. Biting and mouthing are natural activities for puppies and young dogs. They instinctively nip when playing with their siblings. This is the way they interact with the world around them. Left with his family, a puppy would soon be taught by his mother and siblings to control his bite. But most puppies are removed from their mothers before they've had a chance to learn this lesson.
With this in mind, taking advantage of your puppy's natural instincts can actually provide you with an easy, painless way to inhibit his biting. All you have to do is let him play and socialize with other dogs. Puppies love to tumble and roll and play. They also love to nip. If your puppy becomes a bit too rough in the company of other dogs, the rest of the group will quickly correct his inappropriate behavior. As simple as it is, this socialization with other dogs is easily the most effective way for him to learn to control himself when he's tempted to nip.
There are other benefits to socializing your puppy as well. He'll learn not to fear other dogs. He'll expend his excess energy. And you'll find that he interacts better with the rest of your family. Puppies that miss out on socializing with other dogs tend to be hyperactive and destructive and exhibit other problem behaviors. In addition, unsocialized dogs will often react aggressively to new situations. So any efforts you make to expose your puppy to other dogs and new people (especially children) will pay dividends in many ares of your puppy's development.
This can be particularly helpful if you have children in the family. Children are closer in size to dogs, and they often have that same puppy-like energy that can be interpreted as aggressive by a dog. So while your puppy is still young (four months old or even younger), this is a good time to have him interacting with children in a proper manner that excites neither your puppy or the children. This can be especially important if your puppy is from a breed of large or aggressive dogs.
The next way to work with your puppy in eliminating biting behaviors is to gain his trust and respect. This goes a long way toward making all training easier and more effective, especially if you're working to correct problem behaviors.
How do you gain your puppy's respect? By treating him with respect.
Whether you're training your puppy or just playing, always treat him with respect. This means no hitting or slapping your puppy, even in situations where you're trying to correct inappropriate behavior. Physical punishment will not only destroy the trust and respect of your puppy, it'll make him afraid of you. More important, it's often ineffective. Reprimanding your puppy will not stop him from biting. It'll only confuse him.
Using positive reinforcement, which generally means treats and plenty of praise, will teach him much faster and more effectively to play without biting.
A puppy that bites will grow up to be a dog that bites unless you teach him better. Left alone, these negative behaviors only become worse. So deal with them early, and deal with them positively, and you'll establish the foundation for a loving, healthy relationship with your puppy for the rest of his life.

12:11 pm - Allergic To Your Dog Or Cat?
dorromon4756 Allergic To Your Dog Or Cat?
 by: Samuel Murray
Pets definitely help us live longer and healthier lives. This is especially true of the elderly and those of us who live alone. Pets make wonderful and faithful companions. They are always there for us. However, this relationship can become strained, and sometimes even be broken when someone in the household develops an allergy to a beloved pet.
Studies show that approximately 15% of the population suffers from an allergy to a dog or cat, and about one third of those with an allergy to cats choose to live in a household with a cat despite the allergy. Some allergy suffers live happily with a pet for a year or two before an allergy starts.
There are sometimes long term health ramifications of repeated allergy flair up's, especially for children. Repeated flair-up's can cause permanent lung damage in children. This should be carefully and thoroughly discussed with your physician. One of the ways to live happily with an animal you are allergic to is to decrease your exposure to the animal. Keep the animal outside if possible.
If the allergy sufferer only has a mild reaction to the animal there are ways for the two of them to live together in harmony, but it takes work. The animal should not be allowed in the allergy sufferers bedroom or on the bed. Keep the animal off of any upholstered furniture in the house as dander can be transferred to upholstered furniture. Use a room purifier to remove airborne animal dander. Remove carpets from the home if possible and replace with wood floors. Wash area rugs on a regular basis with warm water. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter in order to trap dander. The allergy sufferer should wash his or her face and hands after handling the animal. The animal can be bathed weekly in specially formulated shampoo that removes dander.
In some cases where the above methods and the use of over the counter antihistamines and decongestants do not help, the allergy sufferer may need to seek the help of an allergist. Immunotherapy can be thought of like a vaccination against your allergies. Given on a regular basis as shots, immunotherapy helps your body build up a natural tolerance to specific allergens.
With the use of the above methods you'll be able to live a long and healthy life with your pet!

10:11 am - Mabeka: Gorilla Teacher
dorromon4756 Mabeka: Gorilla Teacher
 by: Nedda Wittels
Mabeke is a young gorilla who was born in captivity and then returned to the wild with several other gorillas of similar birth. I had an opportunity to meet Mabeke during one of the workshops I teach in Telepathic Communication with Animals.
A young woman workshop participant named Fleur was employed by a Dutch organization that sponsored the gorilla program. Fleur's job involved teaching the gorillas how to survive in the wild and encouraging them to form a family group.
Fleur brought photographs of the gorillas to the workshop, and during one of the practice sessions, I had a few minutes to speak with Mabeke telepathically.
The first thing I experienced was the sensation of hands touching my face. The hands felt cool, soft, and dry. They explored my entire head, then each of my hands. I waited patiently for the gorilla to finish. I had my eyes closed and could see him in my mind sitting in front of me.
Then I heard "You human...?" It was both a question and a statement. "You talk to me. Why?"
I replied telepathically, "Do you remember Fleur?"
"Yes, " said Mabeke.
"She is learning to communicate this way to help animals like you," I told him. Fleur had come to the workshop to develop her own telepathic communication skills with animals. She hoped to use it to speed up the process of teaching the gorillas to adjust to the wild.
"Fleur nice lady (female) person." Mabeke continued.
I agreed, and then asked Mabeke to tell me about where he lived. "Live in green forest with other family (members). We learn to live like real people." Mabeke emphasized the concept of "real", meaning a true gorilla who lived away from humans. I also felt that the word "people" was similar to indigenous human communities, who often refer to themselves as "the people" in their native tongues.
Mabeke continued describing his new life. "Gather food. Live peaceful. Confusing (at first), but happy time. Better now. Understand more now about lived in real world." Here, "real" meant living on their own, in nature, and not in a cage or human-made structure.
At that moment, I sensed another gorilla approaching us, and asked Mabeke who this is.
"This Umbutu," Mabeke told me. "He think this silly way to talk ... you so far away. Says I should stop talk. I tell him I like talk to you."
"I smart," Mabeke said. "I learn quick to hunt/gather good. I learn quick to find beetles. Very yummy. You try one?"
"No thank you," I replied. "I'm too far away."
"Too bad. Very tasty."
I glanced at the time, and I needed to stop. I said, "I need to say goodbye soon. What else do you want to tell me about yourself?"
"Mabeke very smart and remember what humans teach. Very proud mother."
"Do you have children?" I asked.
"Want to have," Mabeke answered. I sensed confusion about past/present/future. It seemed like there were already some new babies in the troop or would shortly be some, but I wasn't clear on the timing.
I thanked Mabeke for speaking with me, and said goodbye. It had been a fascinating experience. Only one thing confused me. Although Fleur had not told me Mabeke's sex, Mabeke's energy had felt very male. When Mabeke said, "Very proud mother", I began to wonder if I was mistaken in my feeling that Mabeke was male.
After each workshop participant had a chance to get feedback on their telepathic conversations, I described my visit with Mabeke. When I finished, Fleur said, "Mabeke is a male gorilla, and is the dominant male in his group. Male gorillas participate in raising the young. They are very nurturing and often baby sit." This was good confirmation on trusting what one experiences.
My conversation with Mabeke was delightful. He was clearly intelligent and very comfortable with humans, which I'm sure made the interaction go smoothly. I didn't have to draw him out. Sometimes animals who live their whole lives in the wild are suspicious of humans and reluctant to talk, but Mabeke wasn't afraid. His curiosity and openness had enabled us to meet and connect, even thousands of miles apart.

I was asked by a few to post writings here. So, for all those that wanted to see it... Here ya go!

Note: This is a work of fiction. Any and all similarities to actual people are entirely coincidental and not the intent of the author (that would be me!). Also, the main town is fictional. There is no such place as San Patricio, Texas. Go look at a map if you want, but it shouldn't be there. (And if it is, tell me so I can change the name to something else.)

11:08 pm - Hi

melmo_44
I'm kinda new to this whole thing, so hi to all! Here's my top 5 rundown to affirm my dorkiness!

1) My MSN icon is currently Yoda. It has been Spock, Boba Fett, Link, Mario, Sephiroth, Supergrover, World of Warcraft cover, etc.
2) I get told on a regular basis to "use smaller words" when speaking.
3) One thing I must have when I get my own house is a room for a library to store my multitudes of books.
4) I read textbooks. For fun.
5) And finally..... One night at one of the archaeology parties for my field school, me and my friend sat and had a discussion on the amount of certain artifacts we'd found. We were both very drunk at the time. I'm no better sober either.

So how bout that? Does that qualify as "dorky"? :)

Hi all,
A few weeks ago I downloaded Kerclick and have found it to be really cool. I'm really suspicous about online money maker programs, but I tried this one and it works. Kerclink is a network designed to provide the consumer w/ a fun way to save money while advertisers compete for their business! You have to download a small program that notifies you about cash giveaways and cash games, as well as special offers from advertisers. The system does not use spyware. You get to play for "clinks" or cash (.01-.15)depending on the game. Thw clicks are very easy to get and at the end of the month they are converted to cash. Clinks have no specific value assigned to them. The value they get at the end of the month will depend on the revenue they generate each month. 3 weeks and I have made a little over $72. Pay out is at $10 It is not a second income but the games are fun and at least I get paid for them.
if you would like to check it out please use the following link ( I'll get 1000 clinks)
