Appointed in January 2008 as joint research Professor between the Institute of Creative Technology and Art and Design at De Montfort, with a brief to align the two in a more direct relationship. His track record as a researcher and practitioner in Digital Arts is a long one stretching back to the early 1980s. Originally a Graduate of English Literature and Philosophy from Bristol University, he subsequently studied Printmaking at Atelier 17 in Paris with S.W. Hayter and then at Goldsmiths, where he also developed an abiding interest in Photography. From such an already hybrid background he moved into Computer Arts, establishing the first postgraduate course in the discipline in London in 1982.

Research

His art practice in internet art and interactive narrative installations has been seen around the world including Milia in Cannes; Paris; The ICA London and in Germany, Montreal, Nagoya in Japan and Melbourne, Australia.

He as delivered papers on interactive narrative and exhibited at many major conferences in the field including ISEA: Montreal 1995, Rotterdam 1996, Chicago 1997, Nagoya 2002, University of Oslo 2004, Siggraph, 2005, Refresh Banff Arts Centre 2005, Digital Matchmakers Trondheim 2005 Plan ICA 2005, NAI Rotterdam 2008, Intelligent Environments Seattle 2008, Locunet University of Athens 2008, and at many other conference venues across the UK and Europe.

His interactive installations include Understanding Echo shown in Japan 2002, Hosts Bath Abbey 2006 and Secret Door Invideo Milan 2006, The Street RMIT Gallery Melbourne 2008. He is currently developing mobile artworks for Manchester and Vienna, and public installations for the new DMC in Leicester.

The advent of new media presents a serious challenge to our understanding of visual representatio... more The advent of new media presents a serious challenge to our understanding of visual representation, of narrative and indeed the whole art of the moving image. New media forms are emerging in hypertext, multimedia, computer games, interactive broadcast and screen media. These are constantly redefining the relationship between story and text and between the creators of art and their audiences who are increasingly becoming the co-producers of meaning in a variety of media. This text presents the work of cultural theorists and philosophers of new media, together with the perspectives of artists experimenting with different interactive models critically examining their own practice. The book proposes the use of new critical tools for discussing new media forms, analyzing how the new stories of these media relate to issues of gender, race and identity, and exploring the different methods of artistic platforms like the Internet, media installation, CD-ROM or expanded cinema. The accompanying DVD-ROM provides a sampler of interactive work and videos by which to explore the experimental territory where the cinematic and digital arts converge.

This is a book based on primary field research, its principal aims being to interrogate and expla... more This is a book based on primary field research, its principal aims being to interrogate and explain the visual languages and critical discourses growing up around the new art and narrative forms which are adapting to mobile technologies, in particular through examining audience response. The book forms a study of these emergent uses of mobile, wearable and wire-free technologies, which have moved the audience for screen-based work out of the gallery and cinema into public spaces and geographies, with a particular focus on forms of experimental art works using narrative in its new spatialised or “locative” incarnations. This continues arguments on reception rehearsed in Rieser, M, Zapp, A, New Screen Media: Cinema/Art/ Narrative (BFI, London, 2002), but examines and contextualizes more recent and developing work founded on mobile technologies.

The Gorilla in the Library: lessons in using ICT to engage building users in energy reduction

This paper is chiefly concerned with the role of the digital economy as an enabler of behaviour c... more This paper is chiefly concerned with the role of the digital economy as an enabler of behaviour change with specific reference to reducing energy in buildings. The Greenview research project at De Montfort University (DMU), funded by JISC’s Greening ICT fund, has undertaken innovative research to explore novel and interesting ways to engage building users in energy reduction initiatives using digital technologies. Findings are presented around both the methodological challenges of capturing and presenting live electrical data for iPhone applications and the wider opportunities and barriers to ICT enabled behaviour change. From a technical perspective Greenview has shown the need to conduct detailed and thorough technical work to ensure the visualisations correlate to actual building performance, from the behaviour change perspective both Greenview and its predecessor (DUALL) have both shown the need to move beyond linear quantitative approaches to presenting information on energy and sustainability that is fun, creative and engaging. Finally, it is clear that without senior commitment and sincere staff engagement and collaboration mere information provision in the form of dashboards are impotent.

Technological and learning environments: Locative media for elearning THE USE OF LOCATIVE MEDIA IN LITERARY DECONSTRUCTION

This presentation relates to a project undertaken at Bath Spa University in 20067 under the aegi... more This presentation relates to a project undertaken at Bath Spa University in 20067 under the aegis of Artsworksa Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). The Crow Road was a multidisciplinary experiment in the use of mapping and locative technologies in relation to a literary landscape. The novel by Iain Banks is set in a constructed landscape in the Western Highlands around Crinan. A team of designers and English scholars collected audiovisual data on a field study and constructed a working interface using FlashLite software, where intelligent artifacts relevant to location and text present themselves at specific locations triggered by GPS. The illustrated paper speculates on extended use of such technologies as a way of connecting student scholarship with actual spaces as a means of understanding the craft and intentions of writers. It examines the pedagogic value of transdisciplinary working and means to evaluate its impacts. The pilot model is being developed into further adventures in deconstructing literary landscapes in relation to other writers. The logistics and methods, are described and contextualized.
