Matt Dylan Saplan Geli is an award-winning student-researcher, international competition medalist, national and local government-recognized citizen, decorated stellar student, and dynamic organization leader. He is currently an Archer Achiever Premier full scholarship recipient and Br. Andrew Gonzalez FSC scholarship-qualified student taking up Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Communication and Bachelor of Science in Applied Corporate Management at De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines. He delivered the student address (the first Humanities and Social Sciences graduation speaker) for the DLSU Senior High School Batch 119 having graduated as a gold medallion awardee (With Highest Honors), Best in Humanities and Social Sciences, Outstanding Research Publication awardee, Outstanding Research Presentation Awardee, and the Distinguished St. Br. Miguel Febres Cordero Awardee.

As an award-winning researcher, he, along with his research team, was awarded the Best Paper Award at the 2021 International Virtual Conference on Interdisciplinary Research in Higher Education for their study entitled “The Perception on Poverty Culture of Grade 12 Public High Schools of the City of Manila: A Critique on Lewis and Moynihan’s Culture of Poverty Thesis”, published before the ASEAN Interdisciplinary Research Journal. For his political communication research study, he won Best Abstract Award at the 2021 Asian Conference on Multidisciplinary Research. Furthermore, Mr. Geli was an honorary research presenter at the 8th International Conference on Innovation in Science and Technology (Stockholm, Sweden) for his statistical study on the relationship between phone screen time and the weight of students. Mr. Geli conducted a total of 11 research conference presentations of which seven (7) are international.

The Culture of Poverty, as the culture behind the deprivation of the poor, persists as a manifest... more The Culture of Poverty, as the culture behind the deprivation of the poor, persists as a manifestation of deprivation of knowledge on the factors contributing to Philippine poverty. Previous literature presents varying interpretations of the Culture of Poverty, often faced with difficulty defining its amorphous concepts, thereby affecting how researchers interpret narratives of the poor. The study determined the causes of poverty as perceived by the informants, identified their perceptions on the Culture of Poverty and their attitudes towards the poor. Facilitating a descriptive research design, ten Grade 12 public high school students of the City of Manila who are natively born in a depressed area of which five are considered poor under the Philippine poverty threshold were interviewed. Thematic analysis was thereafter used to analyze the data and yield meaningful patterns from the themes. The underlying cause of poverty, as gathered from the informants, resulted from a lack of economic and cultural capital, among them being low income and lack of job opportunities and education. Though coinciding with characteristics as proposed by prior proponents of the Culture of Poverty, the findings indicate that the concept of the culture of poverty remains vague and distinct from individual narratives of those in poverty. Meaning that collective perceptions towards the poor are possible to distinguish the poor and non-poor associated with generalization. Thus, further local studies on the Culture of Poverty should not only be explored but applied in different classes to determine its distinct culture as only those in
poverty experience.

Water hyacinth has been causing several problems in the environment as these plants serve as a ha... more Water hyacinth has been causing several problems in the environment as these plants serve as a habitat for disease vectors, clog drainage systems, and threaten biodiversity. Since water hyacinth plants have been a problem to the people and environment, the researchers conducted a research on utilizing it for papermaking. The main goal of this study is to prove the feasibility of water hyacinth to take form as paper. This study aims to find a potential from a plant that spreads continuously. The researchers conducted the papermaking process in accordance to the procedures provided by the Department of Science and Technology- Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI). Likewise, the guidance and supervision of the said institution ensured the accurate and valid execution of the methodology. The paper was tested by the same institution on the basis of international standards for paper quality. For further precision undertakings, the statistical analysis of the collected data was checked and verified by Dr. Cecilia R. Riguerra, a statistics professor. Based on the findings, the water hyacinth handmade paper and sugar cane paper has no significant difference when it comes to their thickness, tensile index, tear index, burst strength, and folding endurance. The sugar cane is a widely used and accepted material in the paper industry. Therefore, since both of these materials yield no significant difference, water hyacinth is feasible to be used for paper.

Political dialogue facilitated within the family, especially by the parents, may influence the ch... more Political dialogue facilitated within the family, especially by the parents, may influence the children's political stands and opinion-characterizing both the manner and frequency. The main objective of the study is to both provide a quantitative and qualitative approach in the extraction of the insights of the students on the frequency of political discussion, articulation of the perception of the students on the manner of political discussion, and expression of the cognizance of the students on agreement and disagreement in political opinion between them and their family. Political dialogue is a complex process that involves both static and dynamic actors. The exploration of this process requires not only a generalized but also a contextualized comprehension of the roles of the actors within it, the message they transmit, and the pathways they use. Furthermore, political influence can be imposed. It may be directed wittingly or unwittingly to certain members of the family by means of creative and effective strategies. In the same way, political discussion bears the increasing possibility of resulting to political similarity in the future. Achieving consensus and relinquishing compromise are vital in improving and optimizing the level and nature of the political dialogue between family members since it offers opportunities for perspectives to be navigated.

Ang pagiging kumplikado ng sitwasyon ng trapiko sa Pambansang Punong Rehiyon ay naging balakid up... more Ang pagiging kumplikado ng sitwasyon ng trapiko sa Pambansang Punong Rehiyon ay naging balakid upang makalikha ang pamahalaan ng mga epektibo (effective), pangmatagalan (long-term), at magagawang (feasible) solusyon. Kinakailangang tingnan at unawain ang suliranin ng trapik gamit ang perspektibo ng iba’t ibang disiplina. Ang pagtukoy ng mga ugat o sanhi ng paulit-ulit at palala nang palalang bunga ng suliranin sa trapiko ay mainam upang makalikha ng mga pamamaraan upang unti-unting bigyang kasagutan ang mga nararanasang kalbaryo ng mga komyuter. Gamit ang mga pananaliksik na nilikha sa iba’t ibang bansa at participant observation, ang mga mananaliksik ay bumalangkas ng isang approach model na maaaring maiangkop sa samu’t saring konteksto ng mga suliranin sa trapiko at makagawa ng mga maaaring maging action plans. Sa ilalim ng sphere ng trapiko at pampublikong transportasyon, ang approach model ay sumentro sa tatlong aspeto - ang pangangasiwa, paggalaw, at merkado. Ang pangangasiwa ay tinitignan sa pamamagitan ng ebalwasyon sa mga batas (laws), patakaran (policies), at otoridad (authorities). Binibigyang-diin naman sa paggalaw ang bigat ng trapiko (traffic load), pinupuntahang destinasyon (crucial destination), at imprastraktura (infrastructure). Hindi lamang limitado ang suliranin sa trapiko sa mga urbanisadong lugar bagama’t mapapansin ang malalang sitwasyon nito sa Metro Manila. Ang paggamit ng pampublikong transportasyon ay iminumungkahi upang maibsan ang masikip na daloy ng trapiko, mabawasan ang polusyong naidudulot nito sa hangin, at maiwasan ang mga aksidente at abalang maaaring maranasan ng mga mamamayan. Ang papataas na demand ng pagbili ng pribadong sasakyan ay maaaring magpalala sa kasalukuyang sistema ng trapiko. Masama rin ang kalagayan ng mga kalsada na siyang limitado ang pagdurugtong sa mga mahahalagang institusyon. Ang hindi maayos na serbisyo ng pampublikong transportasyon ay isa sa mga dahilang kung bakit umaayaw ang mga mamamayan dito. Gaya ng mga nabanggit na kadahilanan sa approach model, ang mahinang pagpapalano ng mga urbanisadong pamayanan ay nagreresulta sa mababang kapasidad ng siyudad. Ang kolaborasyon ng mga pribado at pampublikong sektor ay nararapat na bigyang pansin sa paglikha ng mga solusyon sa kasalukuyang suliranin. Lumalaki ang papel na dapat gampanan ng mga mambabatas at tagapamahala lalo na’t ang mga kasalukuyang polisiya at batas ay hindi na angkop sa pangangailangan ng nagbabagong panahon. Hindi sapat ang wasto at masistemang implementasyon o pagpapatupad sapagkat kinakailangang tuloy-tuloy ang pagsusuri ng mga aspetong maaaring makadagdag sa pagiging epektibo ng mga patakaran at batas. Sa kasalukuyan, mayroong anim na pangunahing nagpapatakbo ng pangangasiwa ng trapiko at pampublikong transportasyon - ang Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), ang Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), ang Land Transportation Office (LTO), ang mga Local Government Unit (LGU), ang mga pribadong konsorsyum, at ang kongreso na siyang may oversight powers. Hindi maaaring piliin lamang ang aspetong dapat bigyang-solusyon sa pamamagitan ng mga program ipapatupad. Makro at pangkabuuan ang kinakailangang pagtingin sa suliranin upang hindi makaligtaan ang mga implikasyon ng mga solusyon sa iba’t ibang aspeto ng suliranin. Ang mga salik ay mahalagang maunawaan sa kanilang relasyon sa bawat isa. Ang kawalan ng kaalaman sa kanilang kaugnayan ay maaaring pagmulan ng mga problemang bunga ng mga solusyong hindi sapat ang pagtanaw sa mga salik.

[Conference Abstract] An Analytical Study on the Relationship of the Phone Screen Time and Weight of the Grade 11 -Accountancy, Business, and Management and Humanities and Social Sciences Students of the De La Salle University -Manila

In the emerging and proliferating age of technology, students who are mobile phone users consume ... more In the emerging and proliferating age of technology, students who are mobile phone users consume long hours of screen time which inadvertently affects their overall health which includes weight. The study was conducted in order to study the relationship between the phone screen time and weight of the Grade 11-ABM and HUMSS students. Corollary to this, the average weight and phone screen time were also determined by estimating using their respective sample means. Accordingly, to analyze the demographic of the overweight students in the respective strands, the test for proportion was executed. Moreover, the average weight and phone screen time was used to determine whether there is significant difference between the two strands in lieu of the variables at hand. It is found that the proportions of the overweight students in Grade 11-ABM, HUMSS, and for both ABM and HUMSS who consume phone screen time are lower than that of the population in the United States. With regards to the testing of difference between the mean phone screen time and mean weight, there was no sufficient evidence adduced to prove that there is indeed the ABM students have higher mean phone screen time and weight. Furthermore, in determining the linear relationship between the phone screen time and weight of the students, the statistical technique Pearson-product moment correlation coefficient was used. For the ABM students, there was a moderate linear relationship. Conversely, the HUMSS students construed a weak linear relationship. In testing the significance of these relationships, all showed no sufficient evidence to say that there is indeed linear relationship.
