Dr. Lawrence P. Belo is a Full Professor of the Chemical Engineering Department, De La Salle University. He obtained his Ph.D. in 2015 from The University of Newcastle, Australia. From 2012 to 2014, he joined the the School of Environmental and Life Sciences of The University of Newcastle, Australia as a casual academic. He earned his M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering and Management in 2008 and B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering in 2001 from De La Salle University, Manila.

In 2009, he received the Outstanding Thesis Award for Earth Science and Space Technology Applications in the 2009 Department of Science & Technology - Philippine Council for Advanced Science and Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCASTRD). He has received the 7th highest score in the Philippine national chemical engineering licensure examination in May 2002.

His current research interests include Water/wastewater treatment technologies; clean coal technologies; waste utilisation.

The sulfur oxide (SOx) concentrations during oxy-fuel c... more The sulfur oxide (SOx) concentrations during oxy-fuel combustion are generally higher compared to conventional air firing. The higher SOx concentrations, particularly sulfur trioxide (SO3) in combination with high concentration of water in the recycled flue gas, increase the sulfuric acid dew point temperature in oxy-fuel fired systems, thereby increasing allowable flue gas temperatures and reducing the thermal efficiency of a power plant. Meycauayan, an Industrial City in Bulacan, Philippines: Heavy Metal Pollution in Soil and Surface Sediments and Their Relationship to Environmental Indicators

The City of Meycauayan is considered as one of the most polluted cities in the developing world o... more The City of Meycauayan is considered as one of the most polluted cities in the developing world on the account of industrial discharges of toxic materials to the environment. This work investigated the sources of the heavy metal pollution by analyzing soil and sediment samples for heavy metals (Cr, Hg, Ni, and Pb) together with selected environmental indicators (TN, TOM, and TP) located along the Meycauayan River. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal components analysis (PCA), and Pearson correlation analysis (CA) were used to identify the sources of the metals. Results showed delineated locations of severe levels of heavy metal pollution downstream because of the concentration of industrial activities. Cr contributed more than any other heavy metals analyzed due to proliferation of tanneries discharging untreated wastewaters to the river.
