This paper investigates the effects of education, inflation, consumption, and GDP grow... more This paper investigates the effects of education, inflation, consumption, and GDP growth on unemployment in the Philippines. Using Ordinary Least Squares, the impact of each factors affecting unemployment is determined. To yield robust estimates, possible violations of the assumptions of the classical linear regression model (CLRM) are accounted for. Several theories indicate that an increase in education and consumption is associated with a decrease in unemployment. However, results of this study show otherwise. The findings suggest that the country’s labor force grows faster than its GDP. Furthermore, the government highly invests in education, but focuses less on the availability of jobs for future labor force participants. Because of this, there is an oversupply of potential workers that would not only lead to more unemployment but underemployment as well.

Using Logistic Regression, the impact of life expectancy, literacy rate, GDP per capita, education, and inflation on human development of countries all over the world is determined. To yield robust estimates, possible violations of the assumptions of the classical linear regression model (CLRM) are accounted for. Several theories suggest that literacy rate is a significant indicator of human development but results of this study show otherwise. The findings confirm that education has the highest marginal effect among the determinants.
Trickle down consumption is proven to exist in the United States where the non-rich households' c... more Trickle down consumption is proven to exist in the United States where the non-rich households' consumption is influenced by both the patterns and levels of consumption of the rich. However, not much is known if such behavior also exists in the Philippines. With the application of the Expenditure Cascades and by using matched households from the 2003, 2006, and 2009 of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey (FIES), this paper will show the effects of the consumption of the non-poor to the consumption of the poor at different levels of income. Using Instrumental Variables, we hypothesize that trickle down consumption exists in the Philippines, and income inequality catalyzes it.

Despite their guaranteed returns, from 200 pre-need companies, 180 went bankrupt as of 2013. This study investigates the effects of changes in financial accounting ratios and macroeconomic variables on the odds of failure. Using Logit Regression and Altman Z-Score, bankruptcy is predicted by assessing the estimated impact of each of the factors. The findings suggest that the real interest rate and the cash flow to total assets ratio are the most crucial factors having the largest positive and negative marginal effect on bankruptcy respectively.
