By now, everyone who cares has probably heard about Zeros 2 Heroes trying to "redevelop" ReBoot. Offtopic: the "alpha" bit in the redirected URL makes me wary, as does the name itself which makes it sound like it's trying to be all Hip and Cool and reminds me of the somewhat sad attempts at Marketing To Cool. It tends to alienate people. The five pitches are now up and ready for viewing and voting. If you want to check them out, be warned that the whole site is supposedly beta (despite the "alpha" thing), and like the now-defunct AnimeOnline, responsiveness is very, very slow. Anyway, my views on the pitches are: it's not ReBoot. It's not a direct continuation, since it doesn't deal with any of the themes of the original, and it's not a "re-imagining" in the sense of the Spider-man or X-Men movies or the Ultimate series, because it implies prior knowledge of the source material. It's all fanfiction. AU fanfiction, no less; a vehicle to explore different themes using some of the basic concepts. There's obviously nothing wrong with that in principle, but I have to argue that this probably does not count as being the next "official" ReBoot. ( My Fandom Weeps.Collapse )I suppose my primary complaint is that I don't know what constraints the teams are working under. Are they not allowed to directly follow through with My Two Bobs? EFF: Legal Guide for BloggersIt's kind of interesting, if headache-inducing, to think about what legal rights (Intellectual-Property-wise, at least) I have when blogging. This whole research journey came about because I was curious about something: if I scan in several images from a legally-bought manga for use in a blog review, how legal is this, and what can I do to keep within the law?Judging from the site, I can have a convincing case for Fair Use if I use the images for commentary (which I will), and/or reduce the image size/quality (which I may or may not do; for general thumbnails yes, but sometimes I'd like to point out various translation oddities, which require a readable resolution). However, Fair Use is a fuzzy thing at best. And of course, seeing as I pretty much imply watching fansubs and raws (which are rather less than strictly legal) on the anime blog (and several times here and in other communities), I'm not sure if all this matters anyway, and I'm better off just being all technically illegal and stuff. Shakespeare: The MMO. ( Site) Castronova said "Arden" will launch--it's unclear when, as the game is still in the early design stage--built around the theme of "Richard III." That's because the play, set during the War of the Roses, offers historical context, as well as enough political intrigue, secret conniving, deal-making and war to delight any gamer, he said. Come I to speak in Caesar's bannination. He was my guildmate, faithful and l33t to me; But Brutus says he was haxx0rz, And Brutus hath +50 DKP. Tags: gaming, links, wtf

Oh my.Patrons at "Cosafe" (a play on the words "cosplay" and "cafe") can expect to be served in a relaxing garden atmosphere by girls in Victorian maid attire, in full anime make-up - complete with exaggerated rose-bud lips as well as accessories such as cat's ears and lacy headdresses. The usual greeting favoured at Japanese eateries will be done away with and replaced with "Okaeri Nasai" - which means "Welcome home, Master". Nitpick: "okaeri nasai" just means "welcome home". Adding "master" would need a "goshuujin-sama". I'm not entirely sure how to react to this. Cosplay cafes have always struck me as being a bit creepy (yes, even me), possibly because Victorian maid dress isn't really my thing. (Nekomimi (cat ears) may be a bit more my style, but what I'd really go "moe~" for are meganekko (girls with glasses). But anyway, I digress.) Having it all happen in Singapore, of all places... I'm not really sure Singapore is ready for this. Is there even a large enough population of anime fans who are otaku and rich enough to patronize this cafe? I know entrepeneurship is a risky venture by definition, but I'm beginning to think that this is a bit too much risk. (Yes, the icon is used on purpose).
