I AM CANADIAN

VERY IMPORTANT PSA about Same Sex DIVORCE in Canada

This is the real truth: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/story/2012/01/12/pol-harper-same-sex-marriage.html

It's not about same-sex marriage. It's about NON-RESIDENT DIVORCES.

A same sex couple who are British and American, respectively, and were turned away by their own countries when they petitioned for divorce, as they do not recognize them as married in the first place. So, the couple came back to Canada to petition our Family courts to allow them to divorce here. Currently, Canada's divorce laws don't allow people who haven't lived in Canada for at least a year to end their marriage.

This post brought to you by the inflammatory, viral (OF COURSE) and ridiculous blog stating "Canadian Government Dissolves thousands of Same Sex Marriages". idek what the fuck, but that is major failboat. (DO NOT ALLOW THIS IDIOT TO CONTINUE: http://unicornbooty.com/blog/2012/01/12/canadian-govt-dissolves-thousands-of-same-sex-marriages-including-dan-savages/)

Information, people; use it before you 'lose it'. If you were one of 15,000 same sex couples who took the opportunity given by Canada to marry the one you love regardless of sex, your marriage is still valid. Please keep calm.

However, if you've found that the one you love is not the one for you, as it is wont to happen, then there may be an issue. Evidently *your* country may not allow you to divorce because they don't consider you legally hitched.

So now it's come to us, and we have to stand up and say, "Canada married the two of you, and we'll have to accept the petition to divorce you. So be it."

Go, Canada!

Kermit: Oh Look Porn!

Cogito, ergo sum

Words have great power, my friends. Great and terrible power, at times.

But there is a force on earth with greater power: The power to reason. Without it, words mean nothing.

Reason
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): rea·soned; rea·son·ing
intransitive verb
1 a obsolete : to take part in conversation, discussion, or argument b : to talk with another so as to influence actions or opinions (can't reason with them)
2 : to use the faculty of reason so as to arrive at conclusions
transitive verb
1 archaic : to justify or support with reasons
2 : to persuade or influence by the use of reason
3 : to discover, formulate, or conclude by the use of reason (a carefully reasoned analysis)
Synonym see : THINK

Sentence first--verdict afterwards!

Hahah. Or not. grrrrr.

I'm going to say this just once, and clearly, so everyone knows exactly where I stand on this issue, so I may go to sleep tonight knowing my positive and friendly words aren't being turned against me. So much for straddling a fence and trying to be nice to everybody.

1. I think critical reviews/critiques/concrit are a NECESSARY part of any entertainment. In this case, fandom. I don't do them, but I read them. I've worked in the industry, and a bad review is just as important as a good one. How many of you have avoided a movie that Ebert hated? Avoided a restaurant that was 'thumbs-downed' by a friend? Necessary.

2. Yes, I have been slaughtered before, and no, it wasn't all penny candy and pocket whistles. Did I lose sleep over it? Fuck no. Why would I? What this means is, I personally haven't seen the big deal in it. It does not mean that I don't appreciate that people don't like it, or even hate it.

3. I have many people on my flist from BOTH camps of the "review wank" who are being hurt by insults and slander, and I do NOT agree with that at all. It is NOT ON.

4. I will defend any people I care about from these words, no matter if I agree with their argument or NOT. I am a Gryffindor. This defense may take on a sarcastic edge, it may be supportive or loud, it may be whatever I feel is appropriate for that person. I have done that since my first week here, and I will continue to do so.

I may not agree with what they have to say on this subject, but I will defend to the death their right to say it.

That is all.

And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest that you've sown

Hi. Some things I feel the need to say. *shrugs* Dunno why.

Impulse Control: the ability to stop impulses that may cause harm to themselves or others.

Decorum: propriety and good taste in conduct or appearance, the conventions of polite behavior.

Reproof: chastisement or censure or criticism for a fault.

Absolve: to set free from, or forgive, a guilt.

This post has been brought to you today by the Letter "D" and the Number "7".

And an old person who is getting sick and tired.

In other, positive news:

Tomorrow, spammity post, if lj stops fucking around. Or, perhaps the follow up to my poll with a meta post I've been working on. Then another Fanartist Appreciation Post the day after, mkay?
*g*

Cheers, all.

Special HBP commentary + a milestone

So. This is my 200th journal post. Yup. And I have made over 2400 comments since the end of February. What does this tell me? I talk too much. *g*

But enough about me. I had a long and involved essay planned on various things HBP, but for some reason, I can't be arsed to do anything about it yet, so instead I bring you third party commentary, fresh from HBP.

'How I Spent My Summer Vacation' by Narcissa Malfoy OR the missing scene before Spinner's EndCollapse )

Cheers!

I have officially arrived in the fandom

And have had a story of mine put on someone's 'bad fic' list. *g*
Apparently, my first ever Fuh-Q-Fest story has absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Good to know.
Now, as maiden voyages go, it wasn't all that bad. I hope. Bad, yes, but still...you can tell me, I can take it. For Crying Out Loud.

The list is vague, it is a massive rec AND bad fic list, so with any luck, someone may think it is a rec, not a slaughter. Heh, heh. Find it here Redrum Rec List.

Thank you, Redrum.

Cheers!

Where for Art Thou, Snarry?

I would like to preface this post with an important disclaimer. I well and truly APPRECIATE all of those people who selflessly give of their time and resources to provide those of us in this and other fandoms with newsletters and daily updates and recommendation posts. Absolutely. This is not in any way a slam against them and the work they do. It is simply...an impassioned inquiry.

Snarry...where are you?Collapse )

Random stuff including Vigilante reviewer

Just some randomness on a cloudy and muggy Fathers Day. I will do another FanArtist Appreciation post later today.

Watched my newly released DVD of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead last night. Fuck, I love that movie. I had forgotten just how much. Top shelf. *nods*

Did you know there was a vigilante reviewer over at FFNet? This person spends all their time flaming other peoples work. Quote from bio page: I am your friendly neighbourhood volunteer beta. Don't like it? Then put some more effort into your stories.

I'm not a big fan of negativity, have I mentioned that?

Also, a funny.
You know those fax spams that every office gets pimping 'management style' seminars? You know the ones: "How to get your employees to respect you/show up/not quit/be more productive"? We got one faxed to my office last week, and Harry Potter's picture was on it! The one where he is looking at the camera, all intense, and holding his wand up. The heading was something like "How to inspire your troops, without having to be a cheerleader." or some tripe like that. It was pretty funny. I left it on my evil boss's desk. *g*

In other news, I have decided that today (as my Father's Day plans are next weekend) is the day I go see Star Wars, RotS.

That is all for now.

Cheers!

Dictionary Lesson

Everybody's got something to say, and an opinion.

I'm OK with that, and in fact encourage it. I have something to say.
It is NOT an opinion, it is a FACT.

We will have a little lesson now on words. Powerful things, words. They can cause serious harm.

For instance:

1. Pornography (including that with children as subjects): Depiction of erotic behavior intended to stimulate sexual excitement, or titillate.

2. Pedophelia: The ACT of HAVING or WANTING sexual relations with children.

See the difference there? It is a big one.

So, if you accuse someone of being a/wanting to be a pedophile because they happen to write porn or variation thereof, you have made a serious error in judgement.

Any lawyer will tell you that.

You can have your opinions, and governing laws, and everything else. But to slander and defame using words like *pedophile* is not OK. At all.

Just saying.

Something odd

I have an unusual question to ask.

I have been reading various lj's and it seems that many of you have kids and love it.
It also appears that many of you do not have kids, and love that.

Being in my mid-30's and childless, I have often (and by often, I mean endlessly) been asked why I didn't/don't have/want kids. Certain people get the 'standard' response, and those who truly know me get the 'truth'.

My odd OT question is this:

If you are a parent, WHY did you have kids? Explain it to me.

If you don't have'em, why not?

You know in the movie 'Moonstruck' where the mom tries to get all the men in her life to answer the question "Why do men cheat?" and doesn't find a suitable answer from most of them? That's how I feel when I ask my friends with kids these questions, usually following a Spanish Inquisition about my own leanings. So I put it out to lj community. Feel free to comment.
Cheers!
