So I know a person who knows a person, no names....

So, let's just say I have a friend who absolutely ADORES a particular WiP in her fandom. It is a most excellent story, she says, and very nearly perfect. Nearly.

Turns out that this story is riddled with SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation And Grammar) errors (moreso in the early stages than the later), but no-one, including this friend, seems to care. No word of it is ever really mentioned in the extremely high number of comments and praise this story receives.

Then my friend finds out this story has been made into a book (at least one hard copy, who knows how many more). With illustrations and everything. My friend is now in a quandary. She, like everyone else, ignored the SPAG problems in the story. But now the guilt of not mentioning it is killing her, because this author has had her story PRINTED, BOUND, AND ILLO'd. What to do? Hence this poll.

Poll #831107 Netiquette Concrit Poll (Reader's Digest Version)

You read an excellent and compelling story. You love it, and so does everyone else. However, it needs some SPAG work. Do you:

Let it alone, it hardly matters on a story this great!
4(4.5%)
Mention the errors in your reviews/feedback.
25(28.4%)
Wait to see if someone else mentions any, then you jump in there with your suggestions.
8(9.1%)
Email the author privately, letting them know they need a beta (or more than one)
29(33.0%)
Email the author privately, offer your services.
22(25.0%)

This same story becomes legendary in its fandom. Now, there is a sequel, and it's spawning tributes. SPAG errors remain, though they are getting better. Do you:

Again, let it alone. No-one else seems to care, so why should you?
11(16.9%)
Mention the SPAG errors in every review comment you give.
8(12.3%)
Email the author privately, hoping that despite the success they've had, they will listen.
46(70.8%)

You've just found out this story has been made into a BOUND BOOK with ILLUSTRATIONS. You hope against hope that it was properly edited before this was done. Do you:

Email the author, asking if it was properly edited before the print date?
13(17.8%)
Congratulate the author with everyone else, who don't seem to care about the little things.
14(19.2%)
Email the author to make sure she asks someone to edit before she gets MORE of them made, for the love of baby jesus.
28(38.4%)
Pretend you never saw it, and go on enjoying the sequel as it is posted. Ignorance is bliss, my friend.
18(24.7%)

FANDOM HOW-TO POLL

"The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination" - Tommy Lasorda

This poll is for anyone who has participated in or been involved in running ANY fandom Fest/Contest/Community Project.

The reason for doing this poll is somewhat selfish; with the Snarry Summer Art Olympics coming up, I would like to iron out any kinks or bumps, and I would really love to have some insights on how to improve. Sometimes that means concrit, or even dealing with direct complaints.

I wish to ask the opinions of people who have more experience than I, or my most excellent mod team. This is less about 'technical difficulties', and more about 'public relations'.

There are so many large and varied fests out there, merry_smutmasharry_holidayshpvalensmutbig_bang_hdhp_springsmutnaughty_newyearthe_eros_affair, snarry_games, to mention only a few, PLUS all the regular comms that host holiday fests/contests, such as pornish_pixies,pervy_werewolf, hpvamp, smut_wednesday.

Everyone and anyone who has participated in these types of fests, please feel free to comment if you wish to elaborate on any poll questions.

JOB POLL

Poll #694835 Should I accept the offer for the new job?

I've just been offered a new job. The have offered me slightly more money, way better benefits, less hours. Downside? Longer commute (from less than 10 mins to a 30-45 min drive), and all those uncertainties that come with a new job. Should I:

Accept the job! Any extra car expenses and travelling time come out in the wash with the new salary and hours!
9(15.0%)
Consider it for 24 hours, it's a big change after 10 years in the same place!
25(41.7%)
Tell your current bosses, see if they want to keep you enough to match.
26(43.3%)

Thanks!

Due to the utter failure of yesterday's attempt to post my Recs List Of Doom Pt II...

I now come bearing a POLL!!!!

I was speaking to a friend earlier today, and we were discussing the 'Americanisms' and 'Briticisms' in Harry Potter fanfic. One of us is of the opinion that fandom is primarily made up of North Americans, and as such, putting in a load of superfluous (not including canon terms*) British terms that no one will understand only serves to cause a fic to falter, especially when said author is NOT British, and it looks forced. The other one took the stand that canon nitpickers and reviewers will shred a fic if it doesn't appear British, regardless if the terms used have never even been seen in a Harry Potter book before. So, a poll.

For the purposes of this experiment, canon terms mean any Briticism or phrase already used in the Harry Potter books. Off we go...

How seriously do you take your British in Harry Potter fanfiction?Collapse )
Anything you would like to add? Opinions? Do let us know.

ETA: North American in this case means 'American' as Canadians do read the UK versions.

Cheers!

How Do You Like YOUR Fanfiction/Fandom Poll

Hey all. I have been thinking lately about many fandom related things, from the reaction of folks to HBP, to the popularity of certain types of fanfiction/pairings. Now, I don't take myself too seriously when it comes to fandom, and you lot shouldn't take me too seriously either. *g* I'm here for the entertainment. The lovely stories and art that fills the empty spaces. But that is not always the case, is it? Hence, a poll. I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Cliches, Genres, Types, Class, Stereotypes

A most excellent author and I were talking today with regards to fandom's canon nazis. She said to me that she wished that those people would stop taking the *fun* out of her *hobby*. I agreed with her on many levels. Although extreme canon!rape can be annoying, probably even more annoying are people who are constantly chastising people about it. And generally making people feel stupid for the crime of writing what they want as a hobby.

But it brought up a whole new set of questions I have about fanfiction and the overall dismissal of people's hard work, using words like *cliche*. Hence my post today.

What is 'cliche' and why is it so bad?Collapse )

What do you think?

WHY SLASH? Snape/Harry or Draco/Harry? Or not?

Lately this has been coming up in several of my HP Yahoo!Groups.
Everybody has an opinion on it, slash forums have very interesting and passionate people in them. *wink*
I put in my 2 cents worth, as I am fairly certain why I like *slash*, and my Snarry in particular. Not that I don't like Drarry, but I am currently sailing the SS Snarry, with no plans to disembark.
But now my curiosity has been piqued, and it is like an itch I *have* to scratch...

So here are my questions, as I am sure they have been asked a thousand times before, but just humour me, dammit!

Q. When you first came across a good slash story, were you surprised you even enjoyed it?

Q. Did you start reading heavy (Adult/PWP/NC17-oops! I said the NC17 word!) slash immediately, or did you work up to it?

Q. Have you switched your favourite pairing? Why?

Q. If you can recall, what was the story that changed it all for you? Either from gen/het to slash, or from one pairing to another.

Feel free to answer any or all. Thanks!
Cheers!
DJIN7
