Towards the beginning of 2019, the Con Com convened to start concocting what many Lubricus attendees have been asking for on a regular basis: a Lubricus Reunion Con. We originally planned for this convention to happen in October 2020. In March of 2020, we decided to postpone the convention until 2021 given the uncertainty around the spread of COVID-19 and anxiety about the US election. Meanwhile, many con attendees were feeling increasingly disenfranchised by JK Rowling’s transphobic tirades in the media. In February 2021, although we now have “adults in the room at the White House” and COVID vaccine on the horizon, the future is still uncertain. Many con attendees may not be able to attend a Fall of 2021 con due to health conditions and/or economic uncertainty as a result of the pandemic. In order to address the needs of those attendees and uphold our values of safety and inclusivity, we will be postponing the Lubricus Reunion indefinitely.

We’ve made this decision with a heavy heart primarily because we want all Lubricus attendees to feel and be safe at our events. In addition, we also acknowledge that attending fan conventions might be an expense that becomes lower priority during times of financial stress. Luckily, we were able to renegotiate with the hotel and should be in a strong financial position to host a convention once it’s safe and possible for everyone. Further, postponing the convention gives us time to think creatively about how to make the convention a safe and healing space for trans attendees and allies who feel triggered by current events.

For those who have already purchased registrations for 2021, we will be refunding 100% of your registration price between now and March 1, 2021. If you don’t see a refund by that date, please send us a note at at [email protected]. If we don’t hear from you, we will assume that you’ve received your refund.

Like many fans around the world, the Lubricus Con Com is sheltering in place experiencing this weird new reality that COVID-19 has brought upon us. Self care is extremely important during times like this and in addition to taking long bubble baths and snuggling with our pets, we’re also reading fic! We’ll of course be monitoring the global health situation and will be sending updates about the con as we get closer to the dates.

Lubricus and Current Events (Covid-19)

• Lubricus is still on: The Lubricus Con Com has discussed the current events and is monitoring the situation carefully. At this time we have no plans to cancel or postpone our October 2020 event and are monitoring the situation as it develops.

• Social Distancing: Many people are reporting positive aspects of quarantine and social distancing, even as some suffer hardships in employment and cancellations costs. But staying home can be very relaxing, and the best thing about being in a fandom is that there is a lot of amazing content out there to keep one's attention for long periods. Perhaps now is the time to re-read that epic Snarry from 2009, or to catch up on those fanvids you've been saving on your Watch Later list on Youtube. Meaning to catch up or get familiar with a new fandom via Netflix? Now is your chance.

• Self-Care: Remember self care during this time: Get out into the fresh air away from crowds. Exercise or stretch if you can. Eat fresh food wherever possible. Spring clean. Don't forget to take a break between online or TV content, or turn it right off if it's causing you anxiety. Facetime, Google chat or Zoom Cconference friends and family.

Why Lubricus?

It’s still early in 2020 so there’s time to properly allocate your convention budget and set aside some funds for Lubricus 2020. But with so many different social media outlets for fandom and so many different conventions happening all over the world what sets Lubricus apart? Here are a few qualities about our little con that make us special…

• Lubricus is by fans for fans: The Lubricus Con Com is made up of real-life slash fans who have found themselves craving more slashy content at the mainstream HP conventions. They’ve put on two successful Harry Potter versions of Lubricus and are excited to join forces again in 2020 to host this multifandom iteration of Lubricus.




• Lubricus is affordable: We offer several different types of tickets for Lubricus 2020 with the cheapest version (Get Your Rocks Off) providing admission to all Lubricus programming, the Blue Ball, and the Morning After Breakfast for just $140. The con rate at the hotel is just $149 per night for a standard room for up to two people; the rate is an extra  $10 for a third or fourth person in a room. And on top of that, Portland doesn’t have sales tax!




• Lubricus is intimate and friendly: The previous Lubricus conventions had under 100 attendees each, which provides enough people to have a good time, but not so many that introverts end up feeling completely overwhelmed and end up hiding in their hotel rooms. Many people attending Lubricus have known each other for years, but we’ve always welcomed new faces at cons. If you like slash, we like you.




• Lubricus has a Common Room: Inspired by the lounge spaces at Hogwarts, Lubricus provides a chill hang out space for congoers to chat, drabble, craft, and just hang out. We decorate the space to be cozy and fannish so that it can be both energizing and relaxing at the same time.




• Lubricus has a Blue Ball: The Blue Balls' of previous cons have been a night for congoers to dress up, dress down, dance, eat, enjoy vids and fannish company during an evening of supreme fun. And we always have themed drinks! This year's Blue Ball will be no different and if you need an extra excuse to dress up, it takes place on Halloween.

We Have Almost as Many Registration Options as Voldemort Has Horcruxes

Registration for Lubricus 2020 opens on February 1 and we have lots of options to choose from. Here is an overview of what’s available…

• Get Your Rocks Off ($140): This is a Basic Registration. Includes admission to all Lubricus programming, the arts & crafts fair, the Blue Ball, and the Morning After Breakfast.

• Lend a Helping Hand ($175): This is a Sponsorship Registration No pillow princexes here - you want to help others reach their bliss by contributing an extra $35 toward our scholarship fund, so we can provide reduced-cost registrations to those who need financial assistance. Your registration includes admission to all Lubricus programming, the arts & crafts fair, the Blue Ball, and the Morning After Breakfast.

• BDE (Big Donor Energy ($250): This is an Investor Registration. Like the Malfoys, you’re willing and able to provide financial support for a great cause. By purchasing this level of registration, you're helping us keep costs down for the Basic Registration, so our con is as accessible as possible for slash lovers of all means! This registration includes admission to all Lubricus programming, the arts & crafts fair, the Blue Ball, and the Morning After Breakfast.

• No Strings Attached ($25): This is a Non-Attending Registration. You won’t be attending Lubricus, but you still want to show some love! Like the Hogwarts ghosts, you’ll be with us in spirit.

• One Night Stand ($25): This is a ticket for admission ONLY to the Blue Ball on October 31, 2020. Dust off your dress robes and get ready for the HOTTEST Halloween party in town. These tickets can be purchased alone at any time, or as an add-on when you purchase any of the registrations listed below. Bring your friends, enemies, rivals, crushes, partners, favorite Quidditch star, etc. There will be a cash bar at the Ball where you can purchase drink tickets.

Recently, I've noticed an upsurge of a few pet peeves in fanfic. Is it the fandoms I'm in or is it indicative of the new/young writers on the block? I don't know and I don't care, I fucking hate it, anyways.



Pet Peeve #1: no-caps writing, but otherwise grammatically correct. this means that the writer is avoiding caps specifically as a style, not because of laziness, i.e. sms text writing. ao3 even has a tag for it: lowercase. (see what i've done here?) HATE HATE HATE. ARGH, WHY?

Pet Peeve #2: Speaking of tags: excessive tagging. This one has long been a pet peeve and I've complained about it before. But my mother always said, "The best defence is a good offence."...or was it, "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts." In any event, this must be dealt with before the tags themselves become stand-alone fics.

In the beginning, there was author-notes. Some authors had the most amusing notes and summary blurbs and warnings that were almost as entertaining as the story, itself. Eventually those morphed into tags (on social media, on LJ, on AO3), ostensibly for "search use".

But now, particularly with unseasoned authors (who perhaps don't recall a time when there were NO tags, no spoilers and no reason to put #cuddling and snuggling, & #i warned you all, or #insinuated smut, or #some characters only make a cameo), they are useless, superfluous, annoying, spoilerish, tired, trite, and so unfunny they likely prevent many folks from clicking on a story even with a good summary. ARGH. Yup, still mad.

I beg you to go back to your fics and clean up your tags.

Every so often I come around to LJ, go through birthday notifs, etc, glance about. There's still folks here - some hardcore cross-posters (i see you, ladies) who did not abandon LJ or DW for tumblr/twit, etc.

Reading all these user names on the birthday lists are giving me a million feels.

I miss you all.

I miss the conversations, moments and interactions that we had, even the heated, ridiculous ones

I miss the art and the fic and the participation we all entered into to make this a living, breathing place

I miss knowing how you are all doing in your lives; the good, the bad and the ugly

I miss seeing many of you IRL regularly at cons, though I am lucky to have some RL fen friends locally. Some of you became like family to me.

I miss you. I hope you are all well, or coping well when life hits you hard, as the case may be - life has a way of kicking your ass, I know.

I hope you have the opportunity and the inspiration to still be creative and responsive and happy in a fan environment, somewhere, with like-minded, awesome individuals.

So it turns out that the @ livejournal email addys are not working for "some" folks.

Notifications appear to be coming in, my email works no problem, but the forwarding service is fucked.

A lot of conversations over at the Reunion Roll Call have mentioned meeting other fans at conventions. For some of us, conventions were a big part of our HP fandom experience. And some of us attended Wizard Rock concerts, local meet-ups for midnight premieres or releases, or simply to get together with friends.
