The journey begins …

What do we want to achieve within our pilot project DiMDiCi?
Our goal is to develop a digital mapping tool for urban design and planning that can be used by people with cognitive disabilities.
For this, all project partners we introduced to you in the previous posts are working together.

Together we want to answer two research questions:

1. How can people with disabilities be involved in participatory planning of walkable neighborhoods?
2. What should such a digital and inclusive mapping tool look like?

And who better to find answers to these questions than a colorful, inclusive, and diverse research team?
Our research journey was first about addressing the issues of mapping, participation, and health-related urban design. Therefore, we established a common knowledge base at the beginning:

What is research, what do researchers do?
What is urban health? What influences health in the city, what are determinants of health?
What ideas, requirements, and needs do each of us hold, and which of these do we share in common?

Since we want to build a digital mapping tool, the additional questions accompany our work:

What does a digital mapping table look like and how to use it?
Which adjustments do we need for more inclusion and participation?

In the kick-off workshop, we got creative and used the Rainbow Model (Dahlgreen and Whitehead, 1991) to approach the topic of urban health. For those not yet familiar with the Rainbow Model, PartKommPlus provides a low-threshold implementation.

Based on this, we explored the city of Herne by PhotoVoice, a research method. Photos were taken concerning the categories accessibility, walkability and health and later discussed.
