She received the MA in English Literature at the University of Essex/UK in 2010, worked as a research assistant at Batman University until 2018 when she received Ph.D in Translation and Cultural Studies at Gazi University/Ankara. She is currently working as an assistant professor at the Department of Western Languages and Literatures at Dicle University/Turkey. She translated two New York bestsellers published by Ephesus Publishing. She is mainly interested in literary translation, translation theory, postmodernism and popular literature.

The Effects of Subtitles on Language Learning

The use of subtitles to teach a foreign language can facilitate students' motivation and reduce a... more The use of subtitles to teach a foreign language can facilitate students' motivation and reduce anxiety in the language-learning process. This study is conducted to find out the effects of using subtitles on language learning. We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 20 students who watch subtitled movies regularly in their free time. The results of our study pointed out that watching subtitled movies helps learners improve their learning skills and motivates them to learn more about the target language. In addition, subtitles can enhance engagement in learning, and they help the learner acquire basic knowledge of language. However, more research is required to get most of the subtitled movies as instructional materials to use in language learning classrooms.

Çeviribilim, uzun süre tabi olduğu özcü yaklaşımlardan 1990'larda "kültürel dönemeç" ile kurtulma... more Çeviribilim, uzun süre tabi olduğu özcü yaklaşımlardan 1990'larda "kültürel dönemeç" ile kurtulmaya başlamış, postmodernizmin de alana yansımalarıyla gelenekçi bakış açısının etkisinden sıyrılarak yeni bir döneme girmiştir. Önceleri alana hâkim olan dilbilimsel kuramlar doğrultusunda "eşdeğerlik", "sadakat" ve "özgünlük" gibi kavramlar üzerinde yoğunlaşan tartışmalar, kültürel çalışmaların etkisiyle başka bir boyut kazanmıştır. Postmodernizmle birlikte şekillenen sömürgecilik sonrası ve feminist çeviri kuramları ışığında çeviribilimde bir nevi "politik dönemeç" gerçekleşmiştir. Bundan böyle çeviribilim, kaynak ve erek metin arasındaki hiyerarşik ilişkiyi irdelemek yerine, güç ilişkileri, ideoloji, etik ve cinsiyet temelli görüşlerle omuz omuza ilerlemekte, çeviri kuramları da bu doğrultuda şekillenmektedir. Çeviri artık özgün metnin bir kopyası değil, onun yeniden yazılmış, yeniden vücut bulmuş hali, yani "sonraki yaşamı"dır. Temelde iki dil ve iki kültür arasındaki etkileşimi sağlayarak doğası gereği bir "aracılık" faaliyeti olarak görülen çeviri, yine doğası gereği ikili karşıtlıkların birlikteliğine vurgu yapan postmodernizm ile yakın ilişki içerisindedir. Bu çerçevede metinlerarasılık, melezlik, kimlik ve ötekilik meseleleri gündeme gelir, kaynak ve erek metin karşıtlığı ile yazar ve çevirmen ilişkisi yeniden sorgulanır. Bu çalışmada postmodernizmin genel hatlarıyla çeviribilime yansımaları, Benjamin'in saf dil, Derrida'nın yapısöküm, Bhabha'nın kültürel çeviri yaklaşımlarıyla birlikte çeşitli kuramcılarının görüşlerinden yola çıkılarak ortaya konulur. Bilhassa sömürgecilik sonrası dönemin ve cinsiyet çalışmalarının alana etkileri geniş bir perspektifte ele alınır.

Archaic expressions refer to words or phrases which are no longer in everyday use. In Kitab'ül Hiyel, archaism standing out as the outcome of the author's stylistic choices prevails as a stylistic component. Translating style is one of the most challenging tasks that a translator faces due to the linguistic differences between languages. In this paper, a descriptive translational analysis is pursued to evaluate whether the translator keeps the local color by making a stylistically-aware translation or the ruling archaism becomes neutralized in the target text. A Study on the Self-Translation of Allusions in Bit Palas by Elif Shafak

This paper explores intertextual allusions and their translation by the Turkish novelist Elif Sha... more This paper explores intertextual allusions and their translation by the Turkish novelist Elif Shafak in her self-translation of Bit Palas. Self-translation refers to the act of authors translating their own work. It was a neglected phenomenon within Translation Studies until the 1990s, for self-translated texts were not regarded as translations. Instead, they were accepted as different versions of the source texts. This article aims to investigate how Shafak as a collaborative self-translator treats intertextual allusions and what kind of translation strategies are used for their rendering. To this end, Bit Palas and its English self-translation The Flea Palace have been comparatively analyzed. A range of historical, religious, political, mythological and literary references have been considered as part of the analysis, and the translational choices made for rendering the allusions have been evaluated in light of Simona Anselmi's (2012) ideas on the methods and strategies used for ideological self-translations. Based on the frequency of the applied strategies, it was determined that Shafak predominantly chose foreignizing the target text. ÖZ Bu çalışmada Türk roman yazarı Elif Şafak'ın Bit Palas adlı eserinin öz-çevirisinde metinlerarası anıştırmalar ve çevirileri incelenir. Yazarların kendi eserlerini tercüme etme faaliyetine öz-çeviri denir. Öz-çeviri, çeviribilim çalışmalarında ilk kez 1990'larda gündeme gelmeye başlar; o zamana dek yazarın kendisi tarafından tercüme edilen metinler çeviri olarak görülmez. Bilakis, bu tür metinler kaynak metinlerin farklı birer versiyonları olarak kabul edilir. Bu makalenin amacı, Şafak'ın işbirlikçi bir öz-çevirmen olarak metinlerarası anıştırmalara nasıl yaklaştığını ve onların çevirisinde ne tür stratejilerden yararlandığını incelemektir. Buna istinaden, Bit Palas aslı eser ile İngilizce çevirisi The Flea Palace karşılaştırmalı bir biçimde analiz edilmiştir. Analiz edilen öğeler arasında çeşitli tarihsel, dinsel, politik, mitolojik ve edebi göndermeler yer almaktadır. Anıştırmaların çevirisinde tercih edilen stratejiler, Simona Anselmi'nin (2012) ideolojik öz-çevirilerde yararlanılan yöntem ve stratejiler ile ilgili görüşleri ışığında değerlendirilmiştir. Kullanılan stratejilerin sıklığı göz önünde bulundurularak, Şafak'ın hedef metni önemli ölçüde yabancılaştırdığı sonucuna varılmıştır.

In this paper, the main purpose is to examine the fictive culture-specific items (CSIs) in the Th... more In this paper, the main purpose is to examine the fictive culture-specific items (CSIs) in the The Hunger Games trilogy and what kind of translation strategies are used in their Turkish translations. As the concept of culture is essential for translation studies, analysing culture-specific items is accepted to be one the most appropriate methods of observing the translator's approach to the text. The case study was conducted using Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games trilogy and their Turkish translations performed by Sevinç Seyla Tezcan. In line with the dystopian quality of The Hunger Games trilogy, the CSIs were sorted out to include fictive items which were invented by the author to constitute an imaginary world. They were grouped under five categories taken from Eggen's (2016) work on The Hunger Games with the addition of allusive proper nouns (PNs). The detected items in both texts were compared to determine the strategies used by the translator. As regards to the translation strategies, two separate groups were determined for the analysis of CSIs and PNs. The list of strategies was established by putting together seven strategies offered by Baker and two direct translation procedures offered by Vinay and Darbelnet. During the labelling process, an intercoder reliability calculation was conducted. As the last step, an interview was designed to obtain relevant data in order to make a fair judgment on Tezcan's approach to the original texts. Ultimately, the translator's tendency either to domesticate or foreignize the text was revealed on the basis of Venuti's (2004) theory.

The basic premise of this research is that translation of popular fiction necessiates the awareness of social, cultural, historical and political implications. It is argued that generic features of the texts affect the translators' decision processes. For the theoretical framework, the literature on popular fiction, literary genres and translation are investigated. The case study is conducted using Suzanne Collins' first book of the The Hunger Games trilogy and Açlık Oyunları by Sevinç Seyla Tezcan. For the analysis, culture-specific items (CSIs) are specified in the source and target texts respectively. The detected items in both texts are compared to reveal the strategies used by the translator in order to solve the problems related to the generic and cultural aspects of the text. Ultimately, the translator's tendency either to domesticate or foreignize the text is revealed on the basis of Venuti's theory.

Intertextuality refers to the relation of a text to other texts. Although the notion has connecti... more Intertextuality refers to the relation of a text to other texts. Although the notion has connections with many fields of art such as painting, sculpture, architecture, cinema and theatre, in this study it is examined as a literary concept within the framework of translation studies. Intertextual devices such as quotations, citations and allusions pose great challenge for translators as they require an extensive cultural knowledge and an awareness of the extratextual relations of the text. These relations can be built by author's use of allusions, quotations, translation, pastiche, parody and other intertextual elements. However, the analysis of all these elements seems to be compelling for a translator. Therefore, to investigate how intertextuality is treated in the Turkish translations of Dubliners, the scope has been restricted to the allusions. Allusion is described as an indirect reference to a literary work, a person, place or thing that is already known. In Dubliners, Joyce uses multiple allusions dedicated to literary texts, historical and political figures and events. The case study has been carried out by examining the allusions separately in all fifteen stories within the book. After that, the Turkish translations performed by Murat Belge and Merve Tokmakçıoğlu were analysed, and the Turkish counterparts of the detected allusions were listed for each story. The detected items in both texts were compared to reveal the strategies used by the translators in order to solve the problems related to the intertextual aspects of the text. Ritva Leppihalme's (1997) proposed strategies were adopted for the identification of translation strategies. Kavramsal açıdan resim, heykel, mimari, sinema ve tiyatro gibi birçok sanat dalıyla ilintili olsa da bu çalışmada çeviri bilim bağlamında edebi bir kavram olarak ele alınacaktır. Alıntılar, atıflar ve anıştırmalar gibi metinlerarası araçlar derin bir kültürel bilgi ve metin dışı ilişkilere dair farkındalık gerektirdiğinden çevirmenler için büyük zorluklar doğurur. Bu metin dışı ilişkiler yazar tarafından anıştırma, alıntı, çeviri, öykünme, parodi ve diğer metinlerarası öğeler kullanılarak oluşturulabilir. Ancak, tüm bu öğelerin çözümlenmesi çevirmen için zorlayıcı görünmektedir. Bu nedenle, Dubliners eserinin Türkçe çevirilerinde metinlerarasılık özelliğinin nasıl ele alındığını incelemek için, konunun kapsamı anıştırmalarla sınırlandırılmıştır. Anıştırma, önceden bilinen bir edebi esere, şahsa, yer veya nesneye yapılan dolaylı bir gönderme olarak tanımlanmaktadır. İlk aşama olarak kaynak metindeki kültürel öğeler Newmark'ın belirlediği 5 temel kategoriye göre tespit edilecek ve aynı öğelerin Türkçe karşılıkları çeviri metinlerden bulup çıkarılacaktır. Türkçe çeviriler karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenecek; çevirmenlerin kültürel öğeleri çevirirken kullandıkları stratejiler Vinay ve Darbelnet'in çeviri stratejilerine göre gruplandırılacak; bu sayede çevirmenlerin kaynak metin ile hedef metne yaklaşımları, süreç boyunca ne tür çeviri stratejilerinden yararlandıkları gözlemlenebilecektir. Amaç, çevirmenlerin aynı esere yaklaşımının ne ölçüde değiştiğini ve hangi durumlarda ne tür stratejiler kullandıklarını saptamaktır. Türkçe çeviriler karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmiş, çevirmenlerin kaynak metin ile hedef metne yaklaşımları kullandıkları stratejilerden yola çıkılarak tespit edilmiştir. Çevirilerden biri Murat Belge tarafından 1987 yılında, diğeri ise kitabın basımının yüzüncü yılı dolayısıyla 2015 yılında Merve Tokmakçıoğlu tarafından yapılmıştır. Archaic expressions refer to words or phrases which are no longer in everyday use. In Kitab'ül Hiyel, archaism standing out as the outcome of the author's stylistic choices prevails as a stylistic component. Translating style is one of the most challenging tasks that a translator faces due to the linguistic differences between languages. In this paper, a descriptive translational analysis is pursued to evaluate whether the translator keeps the local color by making a stylistically-aware translation or the ruling archaism becomes neutralized in the target text. This is important in its aim to demonstrate the attitude of translators towards stylistic elements. Archaic expressions were chosen as samples because they have rarely been the subject of research in translation studies. They can also be associated with history to a great extent. Taking into account Turkish culture, archaic expressions used in literature are generally traced back to the Ottoman Empire, for they are regarded as a significant part of old Turkish or Ottoman Turkish. When their historical quality is considered, their translation requires certain knowledge about the source culture and history. Throughout the comparative analysis, archaic expressions in parallel texts were examined in the light of these translation strategies: softening, transcription or borrowing, and stylistic compensation. The result of the analysis will contribute to the stylistic and cultural discussions about literary translation.

The use of subtitles to teach a foreign language can facilitate students' motivation and reduce a... more The use of subtitles to teach a foreign language can facilitate students' motivation and reduce anxiety in the language-learning process. This study is conducted to find out the effects of using subtitles on language learning. We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 20 students who watch subtitled movies regularly in their free time. The results of our study pointed out that watching subtitled movies helps learners improve their learning skills and motivates them to learn more about the target language. In addition, subtitles can enhance engagement in learning, and they help the learner acquire basic knowledge of language. However, more research is required to get most of the subtitled movies as instructional materials to use in language learning classrooms.

Çeviribilim, uzun süre tabi olduğu özcü yaklaşımlardan 1990'larda "kültürel dönemeç" ile kurtulma... more Çeviribilim, uzun süre tabi olduğu özcü yaklaşımlardan 1990'larda "kültürel dönemeç" ile kurtulmaya başlamış, postmodernizmin de alana yansımalarıyla gelenekçi bakış açısının etkisinden sıyrılarak yeni bir döneme girmiştir. Önceleri alana hâkim olan dilbilimsel kuramlar doğrultusunda "eşdeğerlik", "sadakat" ve "özgünlük" gibi kavramlar üzerinde yoğunlaşan tartışmalar, kültürel çalışmaların etkisiyle başka bir boyut kazanmıştır. Postmodernizmle birlikte şekillenen sömürgecilik sonrası ve feminist çeviri kuramları ışığında çeviribilimde bir nevi "politik dönemeç" gerçekleşmiştir. Bundan böyle çeviribilim, kaynak ve erek metin arasındaki hiyerarşik ilişkiyi irdelemek yerine, güç ilişkileri, ideoloji, etik ve cinsiyet temelli görüşlerle omuz omuza ilerlemekte, çeviri kuramları da bu doğrultuda şekillenmektedir. Çeviri artık özgün metnin bir kopyası değil, onun yeniden yazılmış, yeniden vücut bulmuş hali, yani "sonraki yaşamı"dır. Temelde iki dil ve iki kültür arasındaki etkileşimi sağlayarak doğası gereği bir "aracılık" faaliyeti olarak görülen çeviri, yine doğası gereği ikili karşıtlıkların birlikteliğine vurgu yapan postmodernizm ile yakın ilişki içerisindedir. Bu çerçevede metinlerarasılık, melezlik, kimlik ve ötekilik meseleleri gündeme gelir, kaynak ve erek metin karşıtlığı ile yazar ve çevirmen ilişkisi yeniden sorgulanır. Bu çalışmada postmodernizmin genel hatlarıyla çeviribilime yansımaları, Benjamin'in saf dil, Derrida'nın yapısöküm, Bhabha'nın kültürel çeviri yaklaşımlarıyla birlikte çeşitli kuramcılarının görüşlerinden yola çıkılarak ortaya konulur. Bilhassa sömürgecilik sonrası dönemin ve cinsiyet çalışmalarının alana etkileri geniş bir perspektifte ele alınır.

Archaic expressions refer to words or phrases which are no longer in everyday use. In Kitab'ül Hiyel, archaism standing out as the outcome of the author's stylistic choices prevails as a stylistic component. Translating style is one of the most challenging tasks that a translator faces due to the linguistic differences between languages. In this paper, a descriptive translational analysis is pursued to evaluate whether the translator keeps the local color by making a stylistically-aware translation or the ruling archaism becomes neutralized in the target text. A Study on the Self-Translation of Allusions in Bit Palas by Elif Shafak

This paper explores intertextual allusions and their translation by the Turkish novelist Elif Sha... more This paper explores intertextual allusions and their translation by the Turkish novelist Elif Shafak in her self-translation of Bit Palas. Self-translation refers to the act of authors translating their own work. It was a neglected phenomenon within Translation Studies until the 1990s, for self-translated texts were not regarded as translations. Instead, they were accepted as different versions of the source texts. This article aims to investigate how Shafak as a collaborative self-translator treats intertextual allusions and what kind of translation strategies are used for their rendering. To this end, Bit Palas and its English self-translation The Flea Palace have been comparatively analyzed. A range of historical, religious, political, mythological and literary references have been considered as part of the analysis, and the translational choices made for rendering the allusions have been evaluated in light of Simona Anselmi's (2012) ideas on the methods and strategies used for ideological self-translations. Based on the frequency of the applied strategies, it was determined that Shafak predominantly chose foreignizing the target text. ÖZ Bu çalışmada Türk roman yazarı Elif Şafak'ın Bit Palas adlı eserinin öz-çevirisinde metinlerarası anıştırmalar ve çevirileri incelenir. Yazarların kendi eserlerini tercüme etme faaliyetine öz-çeviri denir. Öz-çeviri, çeviribilim çalışmalarında ilk kez 1990'larda gündeme gelmeye başlar; o zamana dek yazarın kendisi tarafından tercüme edilen metinler çeviri olarak görülmez. Bilakis, bu tür metinler kaynak metinlerin farklı birer versiyonları olarak kabul edilir. Bu makalenin amacı, Şafak'ın işbirlikçi bir öz-çevirmen olarak metinlerarası anıştırmalara nasıl yaklaştığını ve onların çevirisinde ne tür stratejilerden yararlandığını incelemektir. Buna istinaden, Bit Palas aslı eser ile İngilizce çevirisi The Flea Palace karşılaştırmalı bir biçimde analiz edilmiştir. Analiz edilen öğeler arasında çeşitli tarihsel, dinsel, politik, mitolojik ve edebi göndermeler yer almaktadır. In this paper, the main purpose is to examine the fictive culture-specific items (CSIs) in the Th... more In this paper, the main purpose is to examine the fictive culture-specific items (CSIs) in the The Hunger Games trilogy and what kind of translation strategies are used in their Turkish translations. As the concept of culture is essential for translation studies, analysing culture-specific items is accepted to be one the most appropriate methods of observing the translator's approach to the text. The case study was conducted using Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games trilogy and their Turkish translations performed by Sevinç Seyla Tezcan. In line with the dystopian quality of The Hunger Games trilogy, the CSIs were sorted out to include fictive items which were invented by the author to constitute an imaginary world. They were grouped under five categories taken from Eggen's (2016) work on The Hunger Games with the addition of allusive proper nouns (PNs). The detected items in both texts were compared to determine the strategies used by the translator. As regards to the translation strategies, two separate groups were determined for the analysis of CSIs and PNs. The list of strategies was established by putting together seven strategies offered by Baker and two direct translation procedures offered by Vinay and Darbelnet. During the labelling process, an intercoder reliability calculation was conducted. As the last step, an interview was designed to obtain relevant data in order to make a fair judgment on Tezcan's approach to the original texts. Ultimately, the translator's tendency either to domesticate or foreignize the text was revealed on the basis of Venuti's (2004) theory.

The basic premise of this research is that translation of popular fiction necessiates the awareness of social, cultural, historical and political implications. It is argued that generic features of the texts affect the translators' decision processes. For the theoretical framework, the literature on popular fiction, literary genres and translation are investigated. The case study is conducted using Suzanne Collins' first book of the The Hunger Games trilogy and Açlık Oyunları by Sevinç Seyla Tezcan. For the analysis, culture-specific items (CSIs) are specified in the source and target texts respectively. The detected items in both texts are compared to reveal the strategies used by the translator in order to solve the problems related to the generic and cultural aspects of the text. Ultimately, the translator's tendency either to domesticate or foreignize the text is revealed on the basis of Venuti's theory.

Intertextuality refers to the relation of a text to other texts. Although the notion has connecti... more Intertextuality refers to the relation of a text to other texts. Although the notion has connections with many fields of art such as painting, sculpture, architecture, cinema and theatre, in this study it is examined as a literary concept within the framework of translation studies. Intertextual devices such as quotations, citations and allusions pose great challenge for translators as they require an extensive cultural knowledge and an awareness of the extratextual relations of the text. These relations can be built by author's use of allusions, quotations, translation, pastiche, parody and other intertextual elements. However, the analysis of all these elements seems to be compelling for a translator. Therefore, to investigate how intertextuality is treated in the Turkish translations of Dubliners, the scope has been restricted to the allusions. Allusion is described as an indirect reference to a literary work, a person, place or thing that is already known. In Dubliners, Joyce uses multiple allusions dedicated to literary texts, historical and political figures and events. The case study has been carried out by examining the allusions separately in all fifteen stories within the book. After that, the Turkish translations performed by Murat Belge and Merve Tokmakçıoğlu were analysed, and the Turkish counterparts of the detected allusions were listed for each story. The detected items in both texts were compared to reveal the strategies used by the translators in order to solve the problems related to the intertextual aspects of the text. Ritva Leppihalme's (1997) proposed strategies were adopted for the identification of translation strategies. Kavramsal açıdan resim, heykel, mimari, sinema ve tiyatro gibi birçok sanat dalıyla ilintili olsa da bu çalışmada çeviri bilim bağlamında edebi bir kavram olarak ele alınacaktır. Alıntılar, atıflar ve anıştırmalar gibi metinlerarası araçlar derin bir kültürel bilgi ve metin dışı ilişkilere dair farkındalık gerektirdiğinden çevirmenler için büyük zorluklar doğurur. Bu metin dışı ilişkiler yazar tarafından anıştırma, alıntı, çeviri, öykünme, parodi ve diğer metinlerarası öğeler kullanılarak oluşturulabilir. Amaç, çevirmenlerin aynı esere yaklaşımının ne ölçüde değiştiğini ve hangi durumlarda ne tür stratejiler kullandıklarını saptamaktır. Türkçe çeviriler karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmiş, çevirmenlerin kaynak metin ile hedef metne yaklaşımları kullandıkları stratejilerden yola çıkılarak tespit edilmiştir. Çevirilerden biri Murat Belge tarafından 1987 yılında, diğeri ise kitabın basımının yüzüncü yılı dolayısıyla 2015 yılında Merve Tokmakçıoğlu tarafından yapılmıştır. Archaic expressions refer to words or phrases which are no longer in everyday use. In Kitab'ül Hiyel, archaism standing out as the outcome of the author's stylistic choices prevails as a stylistic component. Translating style is one of the most challenging tasks that a translator faces due to the linguistic differences between languages. In this paper, a descriptive translational analysis is pursued to evaluate whether the translator keeps the local color by making a stylistically-aware translation or the ruling archaism becomes neutralized in the target text. This is important in its aim to demonstrate the attitude of translators towards stylistic elements. Archaic expressions were chosen as samples because they have rarely been the subject of research in translation studies. They can also be associated with history to a great extent. Taking into account Turkish culture, archaic expressions used in literature are generally traced back to the Ottoman Empire, for they are regarded as a significant part of old Turkish or Ottoman Turkish. When their historical quality is considered, their translation requires certain knowledge about the source culture and history. Throughout the comparative analysis, archaic expressions in parallel texts were examined in the light of these translation strategies: softening, transcription or borrowing, and stylistic compensation. The result of the analysis will contribute to the stylistic and cultural discussions about literary translation.

Amac, cevirmenlerin ayni esere yaklasiminin ne olcude degistigini ve hangi durumlarda ne tur stratejiler kullandiklarini saptamaktir. Turkce ceviriler karsilastirmali olarak incelenmis, cevirmenlerin kaynak metin ile hedef metne yaklasimlari kullandiklari stratejilerden yola cikilarak tespit edilmistir. Cevirilerden biri Murat Belge tarafindan 1987 yilinda, digeri ise kitabin basiminin yuzuncu yili dolayisiyla 2015 yilinda Merve Tokmakcioglu tarafindan yapilmistir. In this article, I deal with otherness, namely foreignness in Shakespearean drama. Particularly, ... more In this article, I deal with otherness, namely foreignness in Shakespearean drama. Particularly, the representation of alterity in Shakespeare's Othello is the dominant issue throughout. A number of Shakespeare's plays include a foreign character; however, each of them fulfils a different function. In Shakespeare's drama, "others" represent more than commonplace "alien" figures. They are ascribed several functions by critics. According to Margo Hendricks, they are caricatures, stereotypes other than real characters. On the other hand, Loomba aptly argues that "others are only figures of speech in Shakespearean drama, conjured up to establish a point of view". In her view, these outsiders are initially regarded as "footnotes", that is, they have secondary importance in the theatres; however, later on they gain value as a means to probe the relationship between West and East. In this context Othello, apart from the undesirable "alien" character, undertakes a multi-functional role in community. It is put forward in this study that Othello is two-dimensional in terms of his roles. On the one hand he is "other" who symbolizes, so to speak, the enemies of the "same". From this aspect, he is assimilated and moulded in accordance with the available order. On the other hand, he is an individual member of the community who undertakes a complementary function that is emphasized throughout. Shakespeare, who stands in between this duality, comes up with the solution of presenting this character as scapegoat. However, that kind of sacrifice does not satisfy the biased audience; on the contrary, the majority ends up sympathizing with the victim. The people's prejudices show a boomerang effect by turning towards them in the end.
