The different versions of Aided Chonchobair 1 The medieval tale Aided Chonchobair, which tells the story of the death of the Ulster king, Conchobar, is well known. In its multiple versions, Aided Chonchobair is a prime example of the variability of Irish medieval tales, and the surviving versions reflect the popularity of Conchobar's death-tale in medieval times. Eight manuscripts, which date from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries, are known to me to preserve copies of the tale. These are the Book of Leinster (TCD 1339, s. xii, pp. 123b-124b; hereafter L); Dublin, RIA MS D iv 2 (Stowe 992; 1300, fol. 52rb); the Liber Flavus Fergusiorum (Dublin, RIA MS 476, 23 O 48; s. xv, fol. 105ra); Oxford, Bodleian Library, Laud Misc. 610 (s. xv, fol. 42b); Dublin, RIA MS 1234 (C i 2; s. xv-xvi, fols 5v-8r); Edinburgh, NLS, Adv. 72.1.5 (s. xv, fols 7v-8r); Edinburgh, NLS, Adv. 72.1.40 (s. xvi, pp. 1-3); and Dublin, RIA MS 967 (23 N 10; s. xvi, pp. 16-289; hereafter N). 2 The texts preserved in these manuscripts show considerable differences, a fact which is reflected in Kuno Meyer's distinction between four versions, A-D, in his 1906 edition of the text in The death-tales 1 I would like to thank the editors of Ériu and an anonymous reviewer for their comments and corrections to this article. The Themes and Structure of Aided Echach maic Maireda Aided Echach maic Maireda is a tale preserved only in Lebor na hUidre, RIA MS 1229 (23 E 25), and it is one of the texts in the manuscript written entirely by scribe H. The story has received very little attention since it was edited and translated in the nineteenth century, and the most recent printed translation, itself a reprint of the 1892 translation by Standish Hayes O'Grady, does not discuss the text in any great detail. 1 Yet the story is a literary and theological work of some complexity written by an author who was both educated in and well acquainted with Irish literary traditions. The tale draws on different sources to create a carefully structured narrative, focusing on salvation and baptism, and baptism is assigned an important role in salvation history. The text follows the dichotomous structure of the Bible and mirrors its relationship between type and antitype, the Old Covenant and the New, Eve and Mary.
