The Dominican William of Alton was regent master at Paris during the mid-thirteenth century and a... more The Dominican William of Alton was regent master at Paris during the mid-thirteenth century and an important representative of university exegesis. The writings ascribed to him, consisting of biblical commentaries and sermons, pose numerous problems of attribution. This study proposes to move beyond the resulting ambiguity by considering as yet unexamined sources of information, specifically, by supplementing available external manuscript evidence with the indications of each commentary s methodology, exegetical concerns and style. Rather than pretend to make definitive determinations with respect to every commentary s authorship, this study sets for itself the more modest task of constituting a list of works the authenticity of which can be a matter of reasonable confidence, and this to provide a basis for studying William of Alton s exegesis and theology. Le dominicain Guillaume d'Alton fut maitre-regent a Paris au milieu du XIIIe siecle; c'es... more Le dominicain Guillaume d'Alton fut maitre-regent a Paris au milieu du XIIIe siecle; c'est un representant important de l'exegese universitaire. Les ecrits qui lui sont attribues, consistant en commentaires bibliques et sermons, posent de nombreux problemes d'attribution. Cette etude propose de depasser ces difficultes en prenant en consideration une source d’information non encore examinee, c’est-a-dire en completant les preuves externes des manuscrits par des indications tirees des methodes mises en œuvre dans chaque commentaire, ses objectifs hermeneutiques et son style. Plutot que d’apporter des conclusions definitives concernant l’attribution de chaque commentaire, cette etude se fixe un objectif plus modeste: constituer une liste d’œuvres dont on peut raisonnablement conjecturer qu’elles sont authentiques, en vue de fournir une base sure a l’etude de l’exegese et de la theologie de Guillaume d’Alton.
