"How old and what was the growth of this fish?”- This question solved by my study in fish biological aspects like age and growth of fish at Department of Limnology and Fisheries (RAU, Bikaner) and Division of Aquaculture (Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai). I started as a fish biologist at the Research Institute, King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran (KSA) where I investigate the fish age and growth history by scale and otolith investigation in Arabian Gulf and later on I served fish farmers become a subject matter specialist fish farming at agriculture science center, Kota. Now a days I am involving in teaching and research and working as Professor at Department of Aquatic Biology, VNSGU, Surat (India) and train the HR for fisheries management.

In the present paper an attempt has been made to study water quality parameters and pollution sta... more In the present paper an attempt has been made to study water quality parameters and pollution status of Tapi River (Gujarat). This is river situated 72º 38' to 78º 17' E longitudes and 20º 5' to 22º 3' N latitudes. For this study the water samples were collected from pre-selected sampling stations during January to June 2011 and important physico-chemical parameters such as temperature, turbidity, conductivity, pH, total alkalinity, DO, BOD, COD, chloride, total hardness, phosphate, Nitrate-N, Nitrite-N, ammonia, sodium and potassium were analyzed. Present study revealed that temperature (20-28 o C), conductivity (0.08-2.71 µmhos /cum), total alkalinity (72-170 mgl -1 ), chloride (29.90-194.94 mgl -1 ) total hardness (20-192 mgl -1 ), Nitrate-N (0.05-0.90 mgl -1 ), Nitrite-N (0.02-0.82 mgl -1 ) and sodium (50-178 mgl -1 ) were within the permissible limits of WHO and BIS while pH (7.9-8.6), Turbidity (20.0-33.3 NTU), dissolved oxygen (4.40-8.50 mgl -1 ),biological oxygen demand (0.40-8.40 mgl -1 ), chemical oxygen demand (24-152 mgl -1 ), phosphate (0.10-0.73 mgl -1 ), ammonia (0.03-1.04 mgl -1 ) and potassium (50.5-178.0 mg1 -1 ) were observed beyond the permissible limits. On the basis of this study it was concluded that water of Tapi River is moderately polluted due to discharges of industrial waste, domestic sewage and agricultural run-off in river water, which require more efficient management to conserve this river.

For this purpose water sample were collected from Nanpura immersion point at morning during pre immersion, immersion and post immersion periods of Ganesh idols. The significant changes in certain physicochemical properties of water of Tapi River revealed decrease in the dissolved oxygen, BOD and free CO 2 , whereas increase in the total alkalinity, total hardness, total Calcium, COD, Oil and Grease, temperature and pH were observed during immersion period. On basis of these changes it is concluded that level of pollution increase in Tapi River due to this religious activity and adversely effect on water quality of this river. In view of the observed changes in the water quality, there is need to aware masses to use eco-friendly material for idol so that culture and environment can be preserved in a cohesive manner.

This paper intends to present the environmental impact of Ganesh idol immersion on water quality ... more This paper intends to present the environmental impact of Ganesh idol immersion on water quality of Tapi River, for this purpose Pal idol immersion point (Ovara) was selected for sampling purpose because this is one of the important idol immersion point of Tapi River. Water samples were collected in morning at different intervals i.e. pre-immersion, immersion and post-immersion. These Ganesh Idol are made up of degradable and non degradable components and paints containing heavy metals due to that immersion activity deteriorates water quality. The physico-chemical parameters including pH, Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, Free Carbon dioxide, Total Hardness, Total Alkalinity, Biological Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Oil and grease and total calcium were analysed to study the environmental impact of idol immersion on Tapi River, Surat and these parameter shows the significant variation due to immersion idols. On the basis of this study it is concluded that pollution and nutrient load were increases in Tapi River due to these religious activities and river system is adversely affected. These religious activities can not stop but we can reduce pollution and save the river to create awareness among the people and society.

Biometric studies of Mahseer (Tor tor, Ham. 1822) from Bari Talab (Udaipur), India

Mahseer (Tor tor) exhibits differences in their meristic and morphometric characters due to genet... more Mahseer (Tor tor) exhibits differences in their meristic and morphometric characters due to genetic variability or change in environmental parameters during development of the phenocritical period. In the present study, morphometric and meristic characteristics and their interrelationship were observed. The morphometric characters showed a proportional positive growth with the increasing length of the fish. The regression coefficient (b) of variable parameters (Y) on total length (X) showed that growth rate with respect to total length was maximum in case of weight (b = 3.113) and lowest in mouth tip to operculum top (b = 0.957). The correlation coefficient (r) was found positive for different morphometric parameters in respect of total length. Out of 24 studied characters 23 characters were observed to be genetically controlled while 1 character observed as environmentally controlled.

In present paper, growth performance of Indian major carp (Catla catla, Ham. 1822) was studied us... more In present paper, growth performance of Indian major carp (Catla catla, Ham. 1822) was studied using key scales in three different sized water bodies namely Mahi Bajaj Sagar (MBS), Survania Dam (SD) and Aasan Pond (AP) situated in the tribal dominated Banswara district of Rajasthan. The annual rings or annuli (+6 to +7) and growth data in samples were observed and used to estimate selected growth parameters. High value of correlation coefficient 'r' 0.946 (MBS), 0.912 (SD) and 0.911 (AP) evident and speak for strong correlation in total length of fish and scale radius. The growth parameters such as Index of species average size (Øh) 12.515, 11.557 and 11.000, Index of weight growth (ØC w ) 96.610, 103.126 and 87.554 for MBS, SD and AP respectively were computed. Growth performance estimation in this study on the basis of key scales exhibited that growth of carps in the water bodies of southern Rajasthan could be divided into two phases: the first, phase of sexual immaturity, which lasts up to two years and second, phase of sexual maturity.

Landmark based morphometric analysis for selected species of Indian major carp (Catla catla Ham. 1822)

In present study morphological differences or body shape variations (BSV) of Indian major carp Ca... more In present study morphological differences or body shape variations (BSV) of Indian major carp Catla catla (Hamilton 1822) were studied on the landmark basis of truss morphometric network (TMN) from three different waterbodies. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using landmarks of TMN to describe the shape of catla that shows the heterogeneous population in the waterbodies studied. On the basis of 'truss network' and application of ANOVA on variables of body sizes and shapes it was observed that C. catla from Mahi bajaj sagar was different from Aasan pond but much close to Surwania dam. The principal component analysis (PCA) of body shape variables provided two important findings (1) all the truss landmarks contributed significantly to the body shape of the fish unlike size variables in which few specific characteristics related to head and body depth and (2) Populations of C. catla appear different from each other as order of loading factor to different components in case of same species from different waterbodies. It is, thus, concluded that all the landmarks of 'truss measurements' contribute significantly to the body shape of the fish. These all analysis supports that 'Truss network' is an effective tool to describe the body shape and quantify the intra species variability of carps.

Water samples were collected at morning hours during pre immersion, during immersion and post immersion periods of Ganesh idols. The changes in physico-chemical properties of Tapi River were observed except temperature, pH and DO with minor changes while CO 2 , BOD, COD, total alkalinity, total hardness, total calcium, and oil & grease were observed with major changes during immersion period. On the basis of these changes it is concluded that level of water pollution increases in Tapi River due to these religious activities and causes adverse effect on the aquatic ecosystem. No one can stop these religious activities but awareness among the people and society can reduce the pollution.

Socio-economic status of fishermen community of Danti village in Valsad district (Gujarat) India

In the present paper the socioeconomic status of fishermen community of Danti village in Valsad d... more In the present paper the socioeconomic status of fishermen community of Danti village in Valsad district of Gujarat was discussed and suggestions of community development were given. Using questionnaire supported with interviews, data were collected from 300 fishermen families during 2009. The age group of the fishermen varied between 18-72 years and the average age of fishermen was found to be 44 years. From the total studied population, it was observed that there were 78.0 % nuclear and 22.0 % joint families. Education level of fishermen was very poor in terms of higher education and specific training, 10.0 % fishermen were illiterate and 90.0 % had primary and HSC level education. The analysis revealed that 51.3 % of fishermen earned not more than lakh rupees per year. There were 49.3 % of fishermen having fisheries experience for 10-20 years. Mechanized boats and modern gears were used by 70.0 % fishermen in the studied area. Technical and financial support form Government was availed only by 4.3 % of fishermen. Marketing facilities were not upto the mark and was complained by 45.7 % fishermen community. Overall condition of fisherfolk from Danti village revealed to provide facilities and uplift the status by educating fishermen and implementing Government schemes.
