Inspiration
With new smartphones lacking headphone jacks, we decided to disrupt the industry by creating a cutting-edge tool to transform wired earphones into wireless. Even if a smartphone has a headphone jack, it is convenient to have wireless earphones instead. Rather than scrapping the wired earphones to get new wireless ones (which would contribute to the destruction of the environment), our device can help increase the backwards compatibility of wired earphones.
What it does
Through intricate technology, the headphone jack is plugged into the Raspberry Pi device which communicates using Airplay to other devices (both iOS and Android). The audio on the device is transmitted wirelessly to the Raspberry Pi which is ultimately relayed to the plugged-in headphones.
How we built it
Using a Raspberry Pi powered by the Raspbian Buster operating system, we pieced together multiple libraries, such as Shairport, in order to allow the communication between the Raspberry Pi and smartphone.
Challenges we ran into
Our group had no experience with any hardware and the Linux command-line which were essential in the process of making the project. We spent the majority of our time learning the core concepts and commands of Raspberry Pi and Linux in order to deepen our understanding of the tools involved. Furthermore, we developed our understanding in these areas to combine multiple open-source libraries for creating our product.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a practical product using tools we were not familiar which will benefit many people who own wired earphones but wish to experience wireless ones.
What we learned
We furthered our understanding of Linux and Raspberry Pi's (and its operating system).
What's next for Wyreless (Deloitte Come Visit Us)
In the future, Wyreless can expand its features such as adding automatic volume adjustion, manual controls (such as for volume and music control), and connectivity using wi-fi. Furthermore, we can improve the form factor for the device, making it more convenient for travel and compacting its size.
