Inspiration
One of our team members recently worked with space technology during a co-op at L3Harris. While there, he attended a talk in which he learned that space travel leaves quite a cosmic mess, and it seems nobody's keen on cleanup duty.
When stepping into WolfJam, we wanted to make a game that would raise awareness for important issues, so, we had an idea - why not launch a celestial cleanup extravaganza?
That's how "Mildly Awesome Space Cleanup" was born! Step into your spacesuit and join our galactic cleanup squad as we embark on thrilling missions to spruce up the cosmos. It's a whole new universe of space-saving fun!
What it does
In the not-so-distant future, Earth’s orbit is choked with space debris, endangering future space missions and the planet itself. As a promising space pilot, you are recruited to lead the initiative. Your mission is to restore the cosmos to its natural state and protect humanity’s future among the stars.
Players start with a basic ship, and as they clean up space debris, they uncover secrets about the origins of the trash and its potential impact on Earth. Using this trash as resources, you are able to reuse it to upgrade your ship and abilities.
Throughout the game, you will engage with mission control, your companion, and other characters, all while learning about the importance of responsible space debris management.
The game offers a blend of action-packed cleanup missions, strategic resource management, and an educational storyline that keeps players engaged and informed. As you progress, your ship becomes a symbol of hope and change, inspiring players to become real-life stewards of our cosmic environment.
How we built it
First, we researched space debris and decided on how to create our story. We decided that we would make fields of debris, and then a random piece of debris would go into your inventory for later use. This would be gathered in our "missions" which you can do from the mission board in the lobby area. These missions are where you collect trash and destroy asteroids all before time runs out. The debris goes into your inventory, (at this moment, light bulbs) so that you can use them later to upgrade your ship (Our upgrade right now is making an LED RGB Spaceship with the light bulbs).
Challenges we ran into
Only one of us is a game design major, and the rest of us have very minimal experience in game dev. This provided us with a very steep learning curve, but we were up for the challenge! There were lots of things we had to learn surrounding specifics in game design terminology and how to implement them in Unity.
For Adrian: I've never worked with sprites, so working with assets from an artist was challenging because I wasn't used to implementing them or using them.
Onvida: Making sure that all of the scripts/scenes were connecting was a challenge for me especially because this was a new skill I had to learn.
Diego: Programming in general was complicated and working with asset management
Saige: I've never designed UI with other artist's assets, so helping those assets shine was super fun but also a huge challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are extremely proud of how complete our project is, not only did our design team make a complete mockup and 100% custom art (all photographed assets are from Adobe assets), but our programming is also mostly done! We love the design and are very proud of how this project came together!!
What we learned
One thing that has always been hard for a few of us has been version control in Unity. For this event, our friend who is very familiar with Unity joined us and taught us better version control.
What's next for Mildly Awesome Space Cleanup
We'd love to add more levels, more customization, and more debris to craft with! Maybe some more game modes as well, like gardening, chores, or even cooking in the space station.
