Inspiration

Often times you never know how much work you need to get done. How many people you may need. What kind of organizational skills are required. The logistics are overwhelming and distract organizations from pursuing their mission statements.

What it does

AutoRithm is an automated arm which works towards assembling food packages. This arm is designed to detect snacks by their colour and pick them up using an arm and sending them to a drop-off location. The sorting algorithm ensures that duplicate snacks are not picked up in one instantiation, so the program picks up a snack of each colour and quits once it has dropped each one off.

By significantly minimizing the amount of volunteers required in assembly, we create an untapped pool of individuals that we can optimize by allocating them to other positions. On our website we have a form where volunteers can fill out a questionnaire. Based on an algorithm, they will be suggested which positions best suit their skillset.

From there, we created an algorithm that sorts how many food packages (halal, veg, dairy free, gluten) get distributed to which neighbourhoods based on the demographics of the schools in the neighbourhood. Then we find grocery, restaurants, other bakeries that are locally owned within each area to act as a third party. These will be drop off points from which delivery volunteers will go pick up and drop off food from.

Partnership Proposal:

  • round up your bills to help support Food4KidsWR
  • we showcase our drop off help of the week on our website and promote your small business to boost your marketing and break stigma.
  • we could also host bingo weeks catered by these small bakeries/businesses

How we built it

HTML, PhP, Java,

Challenges we ran into

Understanding how to combine data sets and how to embed an API into our HTML site.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

CSR: our biggest accomplishment is targeting a wide demographic within the neighborhoods and combatting food hunger while supporting locally owned businesses.

What we learned

The prevalence of chronic hunger, homelessness, and other youth social issues within neighborhoods with stable economic development. Technical skills: php, css, html, ROBOT-C, algorithms

What's next for AutoRithm for Food4KidsWR

To manufacture more automated arms and turn the website into an app. Perhaps, creating additional features where volunteers will be notified through email that their packages are ready to be delivered.
