Inspiration

We were inspired by our own struggles. The process of gathering information to study abroad often meant opening dozens of browser tabs. It was overwhelming, confusing, and frustating. Also with many exchange programs declining due to the economic downturn, it felt like our only shot at global opportunity was slipping away. The hard truth is 74% of Indonesian youth dream of studying or working abroad. But only 0.6% actually do. That’s a 120x gap! And it's not because of a lack of ambition, but because of a lack of access, guidance, and support.

What it does

Boundless is an all-in-one super-app built to guide and support students planning their journey abroad. We've created features to remove friction and bring clarity to every step.

How we built it

Frontend

  • Next.js – A powerful React-based framework for building dynamic, server-rendered web applications with built-in routing and performance optimizations.
  • Tailwind CSS – A utility-first CSS framework for rapidly building custom and responsive user interfaces.
  • TypeScript – A statically typed superset of JavaScript that improves code quality, scalability, and developer experience.

AI & Backend Integration

  • Python – Used for model training, preprocessing, and bridging AI logic to the frontend via APIs or serverless functions.

Authentication & Database

  • Firebase Auth – Secure and scalable authentication solution by Google
  • Firebase Firestore – Scalable NoSQL cloud database used to store user data, application state, and AI outputs in real-time.

Deployment & Infrastructure

  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) – Cloud infrastructure for hosting backend services, model APIs, and storage.
  • Docker – Containerization for consistent and portable application deployment across environments.
  • Vercel – Deployment platform optimized for Next.js and seamless CI/CD integration.

Additional Tools & Libraries

  • shadcn/ui – A component library built on top of Radix UI and Tailwind CSS for consistent design.
  • zod – TypeScript-first schema validation library used for safe form handling and API data validation.
  • OpenLayers (ol-map) – A powerful open-source JavaScript library for interactive maps, geospatial data visualization, and user location features.

Challenges we ran into

  • Tailwind CSS not loading consistently in some components.
  • A few quirks and edge cases with Next.js routing and SSR.
  • Limited memory on local devices made Docker builds and development slower.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We built something impactful and meaningful in a short amount of time.
  • We grew stronger as a team and as a person, every feature was a result of collaboration.
  • And most importantly: we had fun doing it!

What we learned

  • This was our first AI Hackathon, and we learned a lot about machine learning workflows and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Data scraping and preprocessing for real-world use.
  • Using geolocation and interactive maps.
  • Building relationships and networking with other passionate learners.

What's next for Boundless

  • Partnering with college admissions agencies to offer direct services through the app.
  • Expanding AI features to help students prepare for the college application and management.
  • Creating global bridges that accelerate youth mobility and opportunity.
  • Keeping the platform as accessible as possible for everyone.
