A Virtual Hackathon Platform for Developer Learnings

A dev-focused client needed a multi-app hackathon platform to run learn-to-earn campaigns and virtual hackathons that grow and activate their developer community. The solution brings together separate learning, earning, and hackathon experiences so developers can build skills and earn rewards, while operators manage programs and events from a unified environment.

Challenge: Manual Operations Behind a Good UX

From the developer’s point of view, the experience was already positive: users could discover learning tracks, complete tasks, and participate in events with relative ease. However, the operational side for administrators and campaign operators lagged behind this polished front-end experience.

The main challenges were:

Manual submission review

Campaign operators had to manually review large numbers of user submissions for eligibility, creating bottlenecks as participation scaled.

Manual payout handling

Reward processing still relied on manual steps, increasing admin workload, slowing down payouts, and leaving room for human error.

Limited automation vs. growth

Although the platform was a significant improvement over an earlier MVP built on a no-code tool, it still required considerable human effort and lacked deeper automation and governance features.

Solution: Modular Learn & Hackathon Suites

The platform was implemented as multiple applications with separate codebases: a Ruby on Rails app for learn & earn and a React app for hackathons, all deployed on cloud infrastructure to support growth and easier scaling as traffic increased. Each app includes an integrated CMS and a shared admin portal for submissions, rewards, and engagement tracking, so operators can manage programs and events without relying on engineering changes.

The learn & earn experience offers:

• Learning module delivery with track-based progression, helping users move through structured, multi-step learning paths.
• User dashboards for progress and reward tracking, giving learners a clear view of what they have completed and what they can unlock next.
• Submission-based earning workflows with admin-side validation, ensuring only eligible work is rewarded.
• Manual payout management with visibility and verification controls, reducing errors and improving transparency around rewards.
• An integrated CMS for course and track updates, enabling non-technical teams to adjust content quickly.
• Basic analytics, notifications, and role-based access for users, admins, and client operators, supporting targeted communication and safer permissioning.

The hackathon experience offers:

• End-to-end online event management, from event creation through closure, in a single interface.
• Participant onboarding, registration, and team formation tools, so developers can join events and find collaborators without external coordination.
• Challenge browsing, submission flows, and judging pipelines, covering the full project lifecycle from idea to evaluation.
• Admin dashboards for event setup and participant management, giving organisers real-time visibility into activity and progress.
• Integrated announcements and support for parallel or overlapping events, making it easier to run multiple hackathons without operational collisions.

Impact: Engagement and Efficiency Gains

Upon the launch, on the learn & earn side, the platform grew the user base from 178K to 262K (+47%), increased average courses explored per user by 36%, and reduced ineligible payout claims by 62%, while also shortening admin review time by 40%. These shifts show both deeper developer engagement with learning tracks and a leaner, more reliable rewards process for operators.

In terms of virtual hackathons, the platform hosted four events in the first month, enabled participation from 1,745 users, and saved roughly 57.5 hours of manual setup time per hackathon. This combination of scale, time savings, and positive feedback on ease of use and collaboration indicates a much more efficient way to run virtual developer events end to end.
