When Microsoft announced of the Green Software Foundation (GSF),<\/a> I jumped at the opportunity to join the initiative and went all in – joining 3 out of 4 working groups. As a developer and a sustainability advocate, I\u2019m keen to understand and help reduce the amount of carbon we emit as a farm, but also in my job working with software and customers.<\/p>\n

Back in October of 2021, I participated in a Global Hackathon for Sustainability and got 3 days to focus my attention on a project.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Since I\u2019m keen on my farm, I choose a Farm Insights project where I used a Raspberry Pi and some sensors to collect very basic information about temperature, humidity, and soil moisture. I opened the project up to the Microsoft global community and ended up with folks from around the world. New Zealand, Germany, San Francisco, Georgia and of course – me here in Michigan.<\/p>\n

It was super fun and very grueling! We worked 16 hours a day to hack together a project. And \u2026. we didn\u2019t even win a mention in the Global Hackathon winnings – but it was a win for me!<\/p>\n

The solution was using a raspberry pi to collect sensor data and send them to Azure using IoT Edge Services, Log Analytics, and Power Bi for visualization.<\/p>\n

Once I ironed out all the kinks and had the system running efficiently.<\/p>\n
