Then, we used your feedback to add features including <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/visualstudioalm\/archive\/2015\/02\/23\/the-visual-studio-emulator-for-android-in-vs2015-ctp6.aspx\">OpenGL, Lollipop, multi-touch, camera simulation<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/visualstudioalm\/archive\/2015\/04\/29\/visual-studio-emulator-for-android-in-vs2015-rc.aspx\">device profiles and WiFi simulation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we\u2019re excited to announce a whole host of new features for the emulator:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New platforms (JellyBean 4.2 and Lollipop 5.1)<\/li>\n<li>Command line interface (CLI)<\/li>\n<li>Drag-and-drop zip libraries<\/li>\n<li>SD card simulation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can acquire the Emulator for Android when you install any of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualstudio.com\/features\/mobile-app-development-vs\"> Cross-Platform Mobile Development project types in Visual Studio 2015<\/a>, but we knew that this emulator was just too good to limit to use with Visual Studio 2015, so <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/visualstudioalm\/archive\/2015\/07\/20\/you-can-now-acquire-the-visual-studio-emulator-for-android-on-its-own.aspx\">today we\u2019re also making the emulator available independent of Visual Studio<\/a> for those of you doing Android development with other tools!<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at all of the above in more detail.<\/p>\n<h2>New platforms<\/h2>\n<p>You asked on <a href=\"http:\/\/visualstudio.uservoice.com\/\">our UserVoice page<\/a>, and we obliged. The most difficult part of Android development is making sure that your app works on a range of API levels (as well as screen sizes, densities, and other properties that our device profiles help you cover), so we\u2019ve added two more Android versions for you to target\u2014Lollipop 5.1 (API Level 22) and JellyBean 4.2 (API Level 17). With a fresh installation of the emulator, we\u2019ll install two KitKat device profile to get you started, and you can use the API level dropdown in the Emulator Manager to find and install others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/07\/0640.new20plats.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/07\/0640.new20plats.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re upgrading from the RC version of our emulator, don\u2019t worry\u2014we\u2019ll keep all of the device profiles you had previously installed.<\/p>\n<h2>Command line interface (CLI)<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re prepping automated tests that need to spin up a device profile or you\u2019re just a command line junkie, you\u2019ll appreciate our new command line interface for interacting with the Emulator Manager. In the Command Prompt, navigate to<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier\">%programfiles(x86)%Microsoft Emulator Manager1.0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And run <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier\">emulatorcmd.exe<\/span> to try it out. Here are the currently supported commands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier\">list<\/span> \u2013 list all installed (or installable) profiles or platforms<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier\">launch<\/span> \u2013 launch a specific device profile<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier\">detail<\/span> \u2013 list the details of a specific profile<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier\">install<\/span> \u2013 install a specific profile<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier\">uninstall<\/span> \u2013 uninstall a specific profile<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier\">manage<\/span> \u2013 open up the UI for managing profiles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that for all of these commands, the<span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier\"> \/sku:Android<\/span> switch must be included. You can also type<span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier\"> \/help<\/span> after any of these commands for usage instructions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/07\/2364.cmd_.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/07\/2364.cmd_.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Drag-and-drop zip libraries<\/h2>\n<p>A popular method for quickly restoring a set of apps, settings, and data to an Android device is to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robmcghee.com\/android\/creating-an-android-update-zip-package\/\">create a flashable zip file<\/a>. These archives are essentially a set of APKs and other files in a directory structure that matches Android\u2019s. Now, if you drag-and-drop one of these flashable zip files onto our emulator we will unzip the archive and install the files in that directory structure, making restoring from a backup much easier than manually installing each file.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/07\/7384.zip.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/07\/7384.zip.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<h2>SD Card simulation<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ve added a new tab to the Additional Tools window\u2014SD Card. Navigating to this tab will let you pick a local folder whose contents will be used to populate the SD card. You can then push files to the SD card or pull files off of the SD card to this directory. Checking the \u201cDelete Existing Contents\u201d box will clear the SD card before pushing files to it for a fresh start.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/07\/2335.sd_.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/07\/2335.sd_.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Acquire on its own<\/h2>\n<p>We heard that you loved our emulator so much, you wanted to use it even on machines where Visual Studio is not installed. So in addition to automatically getting the emulator when you install Visual Studio, today we\u2019re also making available a standalone installer that you can use to acquire the emulator and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/visualstudioalm\/archive\/2015\/07\/20\/you-can-now-acquire-the-visual-studio-emulator-for-android-on-its-own.aspx\">use it in any way you wish, e.g. with Eclipse or Android Studio.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Try it out!<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond all of the cool new features we\u2019ve highlighted in this post, you\u2019ll also notice a lot of polish in this update\u2014cleaner, more naturally responsive UI, identity management, more robust, and better error messaging. This update is live today and can be<a href=\"http:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/fwlink\/?LinkId=517106\"> installed with Visual Studio 2015<\/a> by checking the \u201cMicrosoft Visual Studio Emulator for Android\u201d option under the \u201cCross Platform Mobile Development\u201d > \u201cCommon Tools and Software Development Kits\u201d sub-node in the Visual Studio setup options.
