Scott R. Paeth is a Professor of Religious Studies at DePaul University in Chicago, IL. He works in the fields of Christian Social Ethics and Public Theology. He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Master of Divinity from Andover Newton Theological School. He is the author or editor of five books, including "Public Theology for a Global Society: Essays in Honor of Max Stackhouse" (Eerdmans, 2010); "Exodus Church and Civil Society: Public Theology and Social Theory in the Work of Jurgen Moltmann" (Ashgate, 2008); "Who Do You Say That I Am? <p>This chapter examines the development of Reinhold Niebuhr's thoughts on nationalism.... more <p>This chapter examines the development of Reinhold Niebuhr's thoughts on nationalism. Over the course of his lifetime, Niebuhr continually returned to the question of nationalism as a factor in international relations, revising his understanding in light of the particular circumstances confronting the United States and the global community. His early writings on German Americanism yielded to a more sceptical analysis of nationalism as a manifestation of collective egoism, but one which could nevertheless provide important resources to human communities. The threat of Fascist nationalism in the 1930s caused him to yet again revise his understanding of nationalism, as a revitalized form of democratic nationalism became necessary to confront it. The Cold War presented the context for Niebuhr's mature reflection on the subject, advocating for a form of chastened nationalism, which was aware of both its responsibility to confront evil in the world, as well as its own tendencies towards self-delusion and the abuse of power.</p>

This article offers an analysis of secularization from within the Christian tradition, with an em... more This article offers an analysis of secularization from within the Christian tradition, with an emphasis on the challenge that the moral and metaphysical dissensus created by secularization causes, not only for a Christian conception of the world, but even for the very possibility of establishing a persuasive case for Christianity in the midst of the social and ideological fragmentation of contemporary society. Beginning with Charles Taylor’s analysis of secularism, it will consider several perspectives on the relationship between modernity, secularism, and the breakdown of moral consensus in the modern world. Finally, it will turn to the question of how Christians should engage with integrity with the secular context of modernity.

The paroxysms of economic pain through which the world has been suffering for the past four years... more The paroxysms of economic pain through which the world has been suffering for the past four years offer any number of possible vectors for analysis-from economic theory, to public policy, to sociology, to international affairs. An examination of the economic crisis through any of these lenses would reveal a great deal both about how we've come to be here, and how we might (or might not) find our way out of it. The "Great Recession" is almost unique in modern political economics: a largescale, catastrophic global economic meltdown, which may well persist for some time to come. 1 There have, of course, been other economic crises, recessions of greater or lesser duration, as well as global crises, such as the so-called "Asian Flu" of the mid-1990s, but the Great Recession has come to be so named because its impact has been unlike anything the world has experienced since the 1930s (see Krugman 2008; Reich 2010; Stiglitz 2010). And given the increasingly interconnected and codependent nature of the global economic system, the negative effects of this downturn are affecting a much greater proportion of the world's population than the Great Depression. The reverberations continue, as we see in the ongoing European financial crisis; but the epicenter of the earthquake, in September of 2008, was the result of a conscious set of
