Instead, the country’s government shows strong preferences for Civil and Political Rights (CPRs), and a noticeable gap in protecting Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ESCRs), defined further below. The following is a discussion of the United States’ role in the United Nations (UN) in defining universal human rights, the USA’s commitments to rights at the national, regional, and international levels, pointing to both the successes and challenges the nation has faced in protecting CPRs and the difficulties in institutionalizing ESCRs leaving working and middle class people open to economic and social inequalities protected by universal human rights.
