ABSTRACT Remote Triggered (RT) Laboratories have emerged as viable alternatives in developing ski... more ABSTRACT Remote Triggered (RT) Laboratories have emerged as viable alternatives in developing skills to deal with physical phenomenon and instrumentation in absence of real laboratory experience. Over the past decade several RT experiments have emerged in different parts of the world including those developed under Govt. of India's National Mission on Education through ICT as part of Right to Education (RTE) Program. However, as the technology to build RT labs evolves there is a growing concern at high cost of RT labs compared to real labs. Though high end instrumentation, 24×7 access and advanced ICT features are attributed to RT labs, however, 'multi-user scalability' i.e. multiple simultaneous users in large numbers is still an elusive goal for most. This may primarily be because most RT labs merely automate the traditional experimentation methodology whereas efforts are needed to evolve a technology friendly method that is amenable to multi-user scalability. This paper presents a remote triggered electronics laboratory that not only operates in a traditional one-equipment-one-user 'interactive mode' but also provides large multi-user scalability through one-second-a-lab 'batch mode'. Such innovations in technology are crucial to empower less privileged segments of the society through education.
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) aims to reduce reliance on extra layer of unnatural access devic... more Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) aims to reduce reliance on extra layer of unnatural access device involving motor cortex and muscular movement of limbs operating keyboard, mouse, stylus etc. enabling humans to directly interact with modern computing resources for the benefit of enhanced interaction efficiency. For the physically challenged with severe motion impairment e.g. biplegics, quadriplegics, these newer ways of interaction prove to be empowering. This paper proposes Brain Interfaced Remote Laboratory, an innovative concept that can make university laboratories 'access friendly' without making any visible physical alteration. This concept is based on the fact that Remote Lab virtualizes physical labs to provide 'on-demand' remote access at place and time of comfort using web. Here we discuss the design, implementation and evaluation of a novel brain-controlled remote laboratory, which allows actuating laboratory hardware through interactive GUI, using neural signals to trigger commands with the help of affordable off-the-shelf wireless electroencephalography (EEG) headsets. Signals from the EEG headset are transmitted wirelessly to the local computer, which natively runs software to discriminate neural signals and converts into library of commands to trigger buttons on web application. We discuss the challenges in making a more practical, robust, and reliable model as part of our on-going research. The proposed paradigm has the potential to eliminate the need of physical access to laboratory premises and does away with the need for any limbular intervention.

Remote Triggered Laboratories have emerged as viable alternatives in developing skills to deal with physical phenomenon and instrumentation in absence of real laboratory experience as well as to provide a sustainable option to shift from Faculty-Centric to student-centric teaching approach, which is more and more relevant in higher level education now a days. Remote laboratories can provide remote access to experiments ( and simulators as well), and can allow students to access experiments without time and location restrictions, providing the necessary guidance and constraining operation in order to avoid dangerous situations (both from set-up integrity and from the user's point of view).

Remote labs have emerged as a viable alternative for developing skills and to learn how to deal with laboratory instruments in the absence of real labs. Remote labs can provide remote access to hardware and simulators, and can allow students to perform experiments without time and location restrictions. In addition, they provide the necessary guidance and also constrain user operation in order to avoid dangerous situations (both from set-up integrity and from the user's point of view).In this paper, we describe a hierarchical model of a remote lab for analog communication that is focused for undergraduate and engineering students. The lab brings together a two level learning approach. i). A basic device level approach for new users and ii). An advanced block level approach for advanced users. Features like ondemand service, virtual breadboard, interactive instrument panels and supporting supplementary materials, makes our lab the right candidate to be used in e-learning. The lab is currently being used for e-learning at distance education centers of the university.

Remote Laboratories provide access to real experiments without time and location restrictions wit... more Remote Laboratories provide access to real experiments without time and location restrictions with necessary guidance required to perform experiments. Remote laboratories have emerged as an alternative to real laboratories and have shifted the past pedagogy from faculty-centric to student-centric approach. Over the past decade several remote laboratories have emerged in different parts of the world including those developed under Government of India's National Mission on Education through ICT as part of Right to Education (RTE) Program. Various approaches have been implemented to promote the use of remote laboratories in higher education. Technology to build remote laboratories has evolved considerably, there is still a growing concern regarding the multi-user scalability of these remote laboratories. Also, there is a need to incorporate innovative ideas such as collaboration of resources among universities within the remote laboratories framework. In this paper we propose a cloud based architecture for remote laboratories that provides scalability, more efficient use of resources, lower cost of ownership and shorter production time. Implementation of an Analog Communication lab, based on this architecture, has also been described. Advanced web technologies have been used to design an interactive user interface that makes teleoperation of high end instrumentation more convenient.
