Visual Novel Segments[]
The majority of the game is reading the text and clicking through to keep the story moving and while make choices along the way.
Adventure-style Exploration Segments[]
You can search an area by moving the Left stick around the scene, which will shine the flashlight on anything. You can move to the next section of an area by pressing the directional buttons on the controller.
Partner System[]
In Death Mark and NG, the partner system allows you to take one person with you at a time to a haunted location.
Live or Die (Death Mark)[]
Live or Die is an event where you will make a choice. A timer called Soul Power will count down. When it reaches zero, it is game over and you will have to start over the scene again. If you make a good choice, the word "safe" will show on the screen. If you make a bad choice, it will decrease the timer greatly and can result in a game over.
Spirit Confrontation (Death Mark)[]
To defeat a spirit you must use the right item at the right time. You and your partner can use one item each choose according to the situation.
Some items are limited use so make sure check the number to the right of the item.
Combo Action[]
When facing a spirit, two items can be used together if you and your partner use the right items. If you need a hint, you can read the spirit file or item descriptions at any time.
Defeating a Spirit[]
To defeat a spirit you must use a specific item to weaken them. The item can't be used until a spirit is as close as possible. When that happens, the screen will glow red. Endure the spirits attacks until they're in range.
Crisis Choice (NG)[]
Crisis Choice is an event where you will have to make a choice. A timer called Security will count down. The gameplay is similar to Live or Die.
Judging System (NG)[]
During some conversations, you will be asked to select an attitude to reply with. You can choose from five expressions of the protagonist. The expression chosen will affect how the other person feels towards the protagonist.
Survival Escape (NG)[]
When you encounter a spirit, survival escape begins. You must figure out how to escape the spirit by selecting the right item to use. You can read the spirit file or item descriptions at any time.
Purify and Destroy[]
To defeat a spirit you must use a specific item based on their background to weaken them. If you use the wrong item, you will destroy the spirit. As a result, you survive but your partner will die later in a CG scene.
