Jane is a Senior Lecturer of International Business and a specialist in doing business in China. She has in the past had interests in international human resource management. She currently teaches MBA students in the Deakin Graduate School of Business and has been involved in many international activities of the School including India Study Tour, China Study Program, AISAM program, and summer school at Aarhus Business School in Denmark. Women in international assignments in multinational enterprises

Research in the US, Europe and Australia shows that women's participation in international as... more Research in the US, Europe and Australia shows that women's participation in international assignments is low. This book seeks to understand why this is the case. A conceptual framework of the factors related to the participation of women in international assignments was developed. Areas covered include the organisational environment, interpersonal factors and support, individual variables, characteristics and repatriation factors. Three studies were conducted using international assignees, repatriates and human resource managers. The conceptual framework was empirically supported by the three studies. It is anticipated that this knowledge will assist women, HR managers and the HR function to develop selection systems, environments and attitudes that are supportive of women participating in international assignments in MNEs. The research should be useful to practitioners, and academics who are interested in the field of international human resource management, and to women considering participating in an international assignment.

Determinants of entry modes for international service organisations : evidence from China

This paper examines the influences on entry modes for Australian service organisations internatio... more This paper examines the influences on entry modes for Australian service organisations internationalising to China. A conceptual model was developed utilising past research in the field and internationalisation theory. The model incorporated the constructs of: resource commitments, previous international experience and whether or not the service could be offered independently of any physical product. The model was empirically tested using qualitative data from interviews conducted with senior representatives from 23 Australian service organisations with operations in China. The data indicated that these organisations increased the resource commitments to their Chinese operations, the longer they were in operation and the more familiar the organisation became with the Chinese environment. The data also suggested that, whilst international experience was desirable prior to entering China, it was not mandatory for success. A bias was identified amongst the respondents towards exporting those services which were separable from products to China and foreign direct investment, representative branches and significant local investment for services that were not separable from products.

Transitional experiences of international postgraduate students utilising a peer mentor programme

The number of students in transnational education has been increasing, and their transition into university is often fraught with difficulties. Universities can support transition through the use of a peer mentor programme (PMP). Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate the transitional issues that international postgraduate students (IPSs) face in their transition to an Australian University. The study also investigated the role played by a mentoring programme, and how this assists students with their transition. Sample: The sample included 31 IPSs, who had come from Asian European, Middle Eastern, African and South American countries, 15 being male, and 16 being female, with an average age of 24; most had been studying at the Australian University for more than 12 months. Design and methods: The study utilised a qualitative research method to examine the experiences of IPSs undergoing transition from their home universities to an Australian university. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with students, who were asked about their transition experiences and the assistance of the mentor programme. Thematic analysis was then conducted to determine themes from the research. Results: IPSs reported mixed experiences with their transition. Those with difficulties referred to loneliness, different studying practices, finding accommodation and making friends. IPSs reported that the PMP helped, as mentors provided the necessary social support, friendship, information and confidence to overcome those difficulties. Those students who did not have problems with their transition had reported that they had friends or family that assisted them with their transition. As a result, these students did not need the support of mentors to the same degree as those students having problems. Conclusions: It is concluded that mentor programmes were important for transitioning IPSs who had difficulties. Therefore, this study identified a role for a PMP in universities where there are a high proportion of IPSs who are going through transitional problems.

Unfortunately, these laws have not been uniformly enforced, making such protection problematic for Australian and other foreign organisations wishing to do business in China. This article first scrutinises the current Chinese laws covering intellectual property protection. It then examines the outcomes of a qualitative study that addressed intellectual property protection issues faced by selected Australian organisations conducting business with Chinese counterparts located in China. Forty Australian business managers/owners from Australian companies having business relationships with Chinese firms were interviewed for this study. The findings show that protection issues are only relevant to certain types of businesses that have intellectual property to protect. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test a model of cooperation between internationalising ... more Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test a model of cooperation between internationalising businesses and local and host country governments in the context of Australian companies internationalising to China. Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents a model for the political dimensions of internationalising based on corporate political theory and the cooperative view of management. Data were collected from personal interviews with representatives from 40 Australian organisations with businesses or operations in China. The data were analysed using NVivo. Findings – Assistance provided by the Australian government was often sought and was perceived to be beneficial. Most participants experienced policies and regulations which affected their entry modes. In ten cases they acted as barriers and significantly influenced entry mode choice. The majority of participants viewed the development of relationships with the Chinese government as important and employed a variety of relationship behaviours. Over half of the participants identified the need to understand and deal with the psychically distant government structures of the Chinese government, namely government intervention in business. Practical implications – The model links the organisational objectives of businesses internationalising to China, understanding the political/regulatory environment, selecting an entry mode and developing/maintaining a successful business. To achieve these objectives corporate political behaviour must reflect the sovereign powers in place at the time. Originality/value – The paper presents a model which develops the literature for the political dimensions of internationalisation. It also presents empirical data on the political dimensions of internationalising into China. These findings will assist businesses in understanding political factors when internationalising to China.

We focus on cross-cultural team effectiveness for MBA students involved in an immersion program, ... more We focus on cross-cultural team effectiveness for MBA students involved in an immersion program, examining the development of knowledge about cultural traits, the challenges associated with teamwork, and factors that promote or hinder team performance, based on qualitative results of a survey of 20 students who participated in the program. Key observed traits included; Indonesians were perceived to be collectivist/relationship, Australians were laid back, informal but task focused, and Americans were hard working and outspoken. Key challenges faced by students included managing cultural differences, culturally embedded decision-making styles and communication/ language hurdles. Team performance was facilitated by acknowledging and addressing cultural issues from the start, not being ethnocentric, valuing team diversity, and focusing on task completion.
