It highlights the successes, shortcomings and interactive issues encountered during a pilot project with a theoretical focus on a specific interactive bottleneck. The paper proposes a new delivery and partnership model to widen this bottleneck, which currently hinders interactions between the technical support, education and professional development communities in music technology.

In this book three ethnographies, based on a youth work practitioner's observations, interviews and participation in local networks, identify young people's resistant identities. Through an analysis of social exclusion, youth policies and interviews with young people, youth workers and their managers, the book outlines a contingent network of relationships that hinder informal learning. Globalisation, individualisation, welfare/education reform and the rise of cultural social movements act upon youth identities and steer youth policies to subordinate the notion of informal group learning. Drawing on Castells' and Touraine's sociological models of identity, the book explores youth as a category of time and residual housing areas as a category of space, as they pertain to local dynamics of social exclusion.

Three ethnographies, based on a practitioner’s observations, interviews and participation in local networks, identify young people’s resistant identities. Through an analysis of social exclusion, youth policies and interviews with young people, practitioners/managers, the thesis outlines network relations that hinder informal learning relationships. The new knowledge derived from this research centres on the retention and certification benefits for disengaged young people using popular culture and social enterprise as authentic learning activities.----- Research Significance : This research is significant because it aims to maximise the number of tangible outcomes related to a school-based arts project. The young participants gained technical, artistic, social and commercial skills during this project. The video sold at numerous youth festivals in SE QLD. It was distributed and downloaded via creative commons licences at the Australian Creative Resource Archive. It also contributed to their certified qualifications and acted as pilot research data for two competitively funded ARC grants (DP0209421 & LP0883643)

Current Australian education policies recognise young people resisting educational opportunities and suggest they receive additional adult intervention. The professional/client casework model, which increases surveillance and control practices, is evident in a range of international, state & federal education strategies. A critical review of literature sought to examine the policies that measure and affect change in the lives of young people experiencing educational disadvantage. The paper is structured around four questions: Do generic definitions of disengaged youth exist? How are governments around the world responding to youth disengagement? What are the aims of Australian education policies in relation to these global responses? How is the state of Queensland responding?

This paper reports on the early stages of a design experiment in educational assessment that chal... more This paper reports on the early stages of a design experiment in educational assessment that challenges the dichotomous legacy evident in many assessment activities. Combining social networking technologies with the sociology of education the paper proposes that assessment activities are best understood as a negotiable field of exchange. In this design experiment students, peers and experts engage in explicit, "front-end" assessment (Wyatt-Smith, 2008) to translate holistic judgments into institutional, and potentiality economic capital without adhering to long lists of pre-set criteria. This approach invites participants to use social networking technologies to judge creative works using scatter graphs, keywords and tag clouds. In doing so assessors will refine their evaluative expertise and negotiate the characteristics of creative works from which criteria will emerge (Sadler, 2008). The real-time advantages of web-based technologies will aggregate, externalise and democratise this transparent method of assessment for most, if not all, creative works that can be represented in a digital format.

The chapters of this book form a persuasive chorus of social practices that advocate the use of m... more The chapters of this book form a persuasive chorus of social practices that advocate the use of music to build a capacity for resilience in individuals and groups. As a whole they exemplify music projects that share common features aligned with an ecological view of reform in health, education and social work systems. Internationally renowned and early career academics have collaborated with practitioners to sing ‘Songs of Resilience’; some of which are narratives that report on the effects of music practices for a general population, and some are based on a specific approach, genre or service. Others are quite literally ‘songs’ that demonstrate aspects of resilience in action. The book makes the connection between music and resilience explicit by posing the following questions—Do music projects in education, health and social services build a measurable capacity for resilience amongst individuals? Can we replicate these projects’ outcomes to develop a capacity for resilience in diverse cultural groups? Does shared use of the term ‘resilience’ help to secure funding for innovative musical activities that provide tangible health, education and social outcomes?

Through an analysis of social exclusion, youth policies and interviews with young people, youth workers and their managers, the book outlines a contingent network of relationships that hinder informal group learning. Globalisation, individualisation, welfare/education reform and the rise of cultural social movements act upon youth identities and steer youth policies to subordinate the notion of informal group learning. Drawing on Castells' and Touraine's sociological models of identity, the book explores youth as a category of time and residual housing areas as category of space, as they pertain to local dynamics of social exclusion. UK youth policies recognise young people pursuing resistant strategies and suggest that they receive additional adult intervention. This book applauds such interventions but opposes the surveillance and control practices permeating the professional/client casework model of national youth strategies. As the book locates the capabilities required to build meaningful personal identities it illustrates strain between young people's strategies of resistance and agencies aiming to reduce social exclusion in residual housing areas. Building on established youth work methods, the hypothesis outlines necessary conditions of an informal learning relationship which encourages young people to form multiple personal identities. This strategy helps young people to avoid prolonged periods of social exclusion and to negotiate the influence of markets and communities appropriately.
