1. (a) The speeds to the nearest kilometres per hour of 120 vehicles passing at a check
point were recorded and grouped as shown in the following table:

Use a non – programmable scientific calculator to find an average and standard
deviation of the speed of vehicles.
(b) If nine students are arranged in the order of rows and columns. Their arrangement
is given by the matrix “S” as shown below:

respectively, use a non – programmable scientific calculator to determine

(i) Find the asymptotes of the function.
(ii) Find the x and y intercepts
(iii) Sketch the graph of f(x) and hence state the domain and range.
(c) Identify the nature of turning point of the function f ( x) = x2 + 5x + 7
3. (a) A person has 2 parents, 4 grand parents, 8 great parents and so on.
(i) Find the number of his ancestors during the ten generations preceding his
own.
(ii) Formulate the formula for the nth term of the given generation.
(b) If Tsh 5000/= was deposited into an account paying 6% annual interest compound
monthly, how long will it take until there is Tsh 8,000/= in the account? Give your
answer in one decimal place.
(c) Think of two numbers such that twice of the first minus the second gives five and
their sum is one. Formulate the linear equations and find the two integers.
4. (a) Differentiate the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 3 + 3 from the definition
(b) A certain firm is facing the cost of production given by the function
𝐶(𝑥) = 40 + 18𝑥 2 − 10𝑥. Determine the;
(i) Marginal cost function
(ii) Maximum or minimum cost at 𝑥 = 2

5. (a) Evaluate the integral
(b) A taxi runs non-stop between two towns N and M and its velocity after leaving
town N is 30𝑡 − 15𝑡 2 km/hr. Find the displacement between the two towns if it
takes 2 hours to reach town M.
(c) Find the volume of solid of revolution by the curve 𝑦 = 4 − 𝑥 2 from 𝑦 = 0 to
𝑦 = 4 about y – axis. (leave your answer in 𝜋 ).
6. The following data shows the number of Basic Apllied Mathematics books that were
surveyed in a sample of 50 schools in Southern Highlands.

(a) Construct a frequency distribution table to represent the given data using the
intervals 1 – 9, 10 – 18, . . .
(b) Find the average number of books in each school and the largest number of books
from the grouped data in 6 (a) above using coding method by taking assumed
mean A = 32.
7. (a) How many 5 digit telephone numbers can be constructed using the digits 0 to 9 if
each number starts with 67 and no digit appears more than once?
(b)(i) Solve for 𝑟 given that 5 Pr = 2 ( 6 Pr −1 )
(ii) Convert the following product into factorial:

(c) If A and B are mutually exclusive events associated with a random experiment
such that P( A) = 0.4 and P( B) = 0.5 , then find;
(i) P( A B)

8. (a) Solve for 𝜃 if sin 2𝜃 + cos 𝜃 = 0 for 00 ≤ 𝜃 ≤ 3600 .
(b) Show that tan 𝜃 + cot 𝜃 = sec 𝜃 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑒𝑐 𝜃
(c) In a triangle ABC, AB = 20cm , BC = 18.2cm and AC = 32cm . Can the sine rule
be used to find BAC ˆ ? If the answer is YES, write down the two ratios of the
sine rule that can be used. If the answer is NO, give the reason.

9. (a) Draw the graph for 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 and 𝑔(𝑥) = log 2 x on the same xy – plane
(b) The growth of a certain bacteria is given by P = Poe0.195t , if initially there are 500
bacteria present and t is given in hours.
(i) How many bacteria are there after two days?
(ii) How long will it take to have 10,000 bacteria?

not be used to solve simultaneous equations by matrix method.
(b) A farmer intends to purchase fertilizer containing three nutrients A, B and C. The
minimum requirements are 160, 200 and 80 units of A, B and C respectively.
There are two popular brands of fertilizers in the market; brand I and brand II.
Brand I costs Tsh 4,000/= per bag and contains 3, 5 and 1 unit of A, B and C
respectively. Brand II costs Tsh 3,000/= per bag and contains 2 units of each
nutrient. If the farmer wishes to minimize the total cost while maintaining the
requirements;
(i) How many bags of each brand should the farmer buy?
(ii) What is the minimum total cost?
