TASK 1

A. What are the different Philosophy of Education?

The different Philosophy of Education are the following;
Perennialism. Its aim of education is to ensure that students acquire understandings
about the great ideas of Western civilization.
Essentialism. Believes that the common core of knowledge needs to be transmitted
to students in a systematic, disciplined way.
Progressivism. Believe that education should focus on the whole child, rather than on
the content or the teacher.
Reconstructionism\Critical Theory. Is the philosophy that emphasizes the addressing
of social questions and a quest to create better society and worldwide democracy.
Eclecticism. Is a conceptual approach that does not hold rigidly to a single paradigm
or set of assumptions, but instead draws upon multiple theories to gain
complementary insights into a subject.
Existentialism. It rejects the existence of objective, instead, the individuals are the
one whose responsible for determining what’s right or wrong, true or false.
B. List down the Different Educational Philosophers and their contribution to
Education.
- John Locke. His Educational Philosophy is The Empiricist Education. For him
Education is not only learned by books but through interaction and experiences
of the people.
- Herbert Spencer. He believes that individual competition leads to social progress.
He said that students learn where they feel physically and emotionally safe. And
each student has access to personalized learning and is supported by qualified
and caring adults. Where the words physically and emotionally safe means no
competition because competition is against an emotionally safe environment.
- John Dewey. He believes that there is learning through experiences. For Dewey,
he’s ideal learner is not some students who learn by doing, for example is
conducting an experiment, but some students who can connect knowledge of the
past to the present.
- George Counts. He believe that the schools and teachers should be the warriors
of change. The schools should be the instrument of improvement. And teachers

are called to make decision on controversial issues. Just like Dewey, Counts also
believes that problem solving should be the dominant method of instruction.
- Theodore Brameld. He is the one who believes in social reconstructionism. It is
the philosophy that emphasizes the reformation of the society. This philosophy
tells that education is not only privileges of few but a right that everyone can
enjoy. Education must be for all no matter what race and class you belong.
- Paulo Freire. He believes that system must be change to overcome oppression
and improve human condition. His philosophy is a problem-posing education.
And the central element on his Critical Pedagogy is dialogue and dialogue is not
something that can be imposed.
