The British Library\u2019s first major exhibition for families and younger visitors celebrates tales of magic, wonder and enchantment. The exhibition begins at the hearthside, before leading people on a journey through hand-painted theatrical set pieces. There are over 150 items from the Library\u2019s collections on display, covering 50 tales from across the world, highlighting global connections inherent in storytelling across hundreds of years.Design\nWorking alongside theatre designer Tom Piper, the exhibition design is a series of carefully crafted story worlds. Hand-painted sets, props, lighting and environmental graphics combine to make it feel like you are journeying inside an illustrated fairy tale book. Interpretation texts are written as rhyming couplets and displayed as if they are book ribbons hanging down the walls. Illustrated story book labels and playful prompts encourage readers to dig deeper into questions raised by fairy tales. Find out what the moon smells like, rummage through space junk and see what happens when you get sucked into a black hole.Design\nThe design is a fully integrated 3d-2d interactive environment arranged as a series of different sets to support the narrative journey through the Solar System. The graphic design encompassed large format photographic and painted backgrounds with bespoke illustrated annotation and photo montage overlay. Visitors are completely immersed in each environment. The project established a visual brand language for Horrible Science, combining multiple assets with new original art. The 400sqm double-height vaulted gallery occupies the top floor of the Grade 2 Listed 1890s building originally designed by renowned Liverpool architect Alfred Waterhouse. The exhibition asks where do great ideas come from?, drawing from the museum\u2019s collections to show how Liverpool has been a great place for many great ideas and to try and understand what it takes to have a great idea.The design injects colour and visual energy to activate the displays. A visual vocabulary of scribbles and annotations draws from the process of working out ideas. Sustainability and future flexibility were built into the design specification with graphics making use of sustainble plywood, recycled cardboard and label mounts that can be re-used easily and repeatedly. We worked closely with guest curator Steve Slack to bring a dynamic presentation to text and graphic information. It showcases the lives and work of William Buckland and Mary Morland, the 19th-century power couple of palaeontology who are credited with identifying and naming the first dinosaur fossil \u2013 Megalosaurus. The exhibition reviews the similarities and differences between their work and how scientists and palaeontologists practice today. It looks at collecting, recording, theory and analysis, and the context of practice including how Mary was excluded from Victorian scientific communities because she was a women.The exhibition design builds on the principles of the \u2018Megalosaurus 200\u2019 visual identity we also created. It was important to ensure the exhibition and its stories were felt to be relatable and relevant to people. Through use of scanned imagery, pattern and texture we created colourful case backdrops based on original watercolour washes produced in our studio, a nod to Mary\u2019s scientific illustrations. Oxford University geologist William Buckland and naturalist illustrator Mary Morland recorded and studied fossils found in a quarry near Oxford, the most spectacular being the jaw and teeth of what they described as a type of ancient giant lizard. We were commissioned to create a visual identity for the anniversary year to spark curiosity and connect the Megalosaurus story with contemporary earth sciences and geology. The identity design pairs Mary Morland\u2019s iconic Megalosaurus jaw illustration with a typographic lockup referencing geological rock strata. The painterly background is a nod to Morland\u2019s watercolour illustrations, combined with a colour palette based on the pigments used in her work. Its original baroque interiors have been faithfully preserved with the ground floor rooms telling the story of the house and the first floor rooms hosting contemporary and traditional art exhibtions. It is set in an extensive 380-acre estate with formal contemporary gardens designed by Andy Sturgeon. We were commissioned to design the summer 2025 family trail shining a light on the lives of servants who worked at the estate. We partnered with illustrator Millie Nice to create an interactive trail around the gardens, outbuildings and main house. Visitors have to seek out the servant characters and. find out if they are having a good day or a bad day. In the 1650s the Fells gave refuge to George Fox, a travelling preacher advocating for rebellion against religious and political authorities. Their home became the headquarters for the new movement known as Quakerism and Margaret Fell became one of the most important spiritual leaders of the early Quaker movement. Both her and George Fox were imprisoned several times for their beliefs and actions. Swarthmoor Hall presents the story of the early Quaker movement in the place where it all started.We were tasked to create a new interpretation design strategy to complement the architectural restoration of the Grade 2* listed building. Working collaboratively with the client\u2019s curators and historians we established a character-led narrative experience centred around Margaret Fell, her daughter Sarah Fell, and life at Swarthmoor Hall in the late 1600s. We commissioned Lisa Maltby to create contemporary character illustrations of Margaret, Sarah, Judge Fell and George Fox, to support a more family-focussed story telling. Interpretation comprised individual components set on table tops, desks, ledges and sills. Nothing is fixed and everything is fabricated carefully to mitigate leaving any marks. The graphic language is built upon a grid of dots in a nod to Quaker needlework craft, generating patterns that identify interpretive interventions. The 90-acre site is a scheduled monument with SSSI protection for its equally significant local ecology. The strange grassy\nlunar-like landscape was named by\nthe Anglo-Saxons after their god of war, Grim, whom they belived was buried there. But the site dates to c.4000BC when it was one of north-west Europe\u2019s largest active flint mines. We worked with Simon Leach Design and English Heritage over a period of two years to re-think and redesign the overall visitor experience, which included new outdoor interpretation trails, a new exhibition in the visitor centre and a completely new immersive audio-visual experience inside\none of the larger mineshafts. \n\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe new interpretation is tailored for \u2018culture-seeking\u2019 multi-generational family audiences, perhaps visiting for the first time, and local \u2018explorer\u2019\ngroups. It is presented through the lens\nof archaeologists and people-centred storytelling. A\nplayful family trail encourages people to explore the\nlandscape and a unique immersive underground digital experience brings to life the stories buried underground and in the ancient rocks. It considered why certain music can make us feel different emotions and how it might influence what we buy, as well as how it can be used to boost health and wellbeing and improve sleep. The first half of the exhibition looked at the innate human urge to create music and where our ingenuity and technological innovations have led. The second half was more reflective, thinking about the effect music has on us as individuals. We worked closely with the exhibition designers All Things Studio and the museum\u2019s curatorial team to design a visually playful and sonically immersive exhibition. The graphic design took inspiration from Gy\u00f6rgy Ligeti\u2019s experimental electronic composition Artikulation and its graphic score created by Rainer Wehinger, using colourful blobs and squiggles to reflect changes in timbre and pitch. These  visual characteristics were redeployed in 2- and 3-dimensions to define pace and space through the exhibition. The design uses a limited palette of environmentally sustainable and responsibly sourced materials comprising cardboard tubes, papers and coloured wood fibre panels. It\u2019s broadly arranged into three themes: bodies, homes and nature \u2013 setting context to help children explore and find out about themselves and the world around them. It builds on the success of Eureka! Halifax (opened 1992), championing STEAM learning and growth mindsets for young people up to age 14. The Eureka! team collaborated with local Merseyside schools to develop content and ideas for exhibits, and partnered with businesses to forge tangible links between playful learning and employment opportunities for later in life. Eureka! Science + Discovery has around 100,000 visitors a year. We led the graphic design for the project, working closely with lead exhibition designers Real Studios and the Eureka! client team from concept stage to completion. We were the interface between final content, illustration, 3d design and interactive design. The project demanded very high attention to detail with every area requiring bespoke setup and design, utilising different print methods and substrates across 2000sqm of interactive galleries. We coordinated our work with build production schedules and at the same time carved out time for creativity and experimentation.
