SPQR

Haven´t been much blogging lately, but have still painted minis and terrain, one such small project have been the new SPQR starter box from Warlord games, lots of plastics in that box.

I just added some odd minis, like the WI Druid, 12 Perry sudanese etc adn got med 2 nice forces. Yes 1,2,3 basing...

I liked the look of the rules and the basic concept, have played a couple of time but not really hooked, at least not yet.

Anyway here are some pictures of the minis I painted, first some Celts and then some Cesarian Romans, guess I´m a Rampant junky as I grouped and painted the minis in groups of 12 :)

Makedonian Miniatures

Now a blog post of a  completly different era, but with a Swedish connection as my friend Björn (that also run the Ådalem Miniatures blog) have started a new miniature project. Björn have a greate interest in ancient wargaming and have decided to produce a small range of special minis for that era.

You can follow Björns project to getting Kestrophedrone miniatures for his Late Makedonian army from computer concept to metal miniatures at Björns facebook page. As it seems he will make the minis available by a Kickstarter called "Makedonian Miniatures" that he apparently will start 1 September 2015.

Here are some sample picture.

Battle of Ilorka 211BC

Last week we played some Hail Caesar for the first time in a month...or a year...

We decided to play my last of 5 Scenarios based on the the Punic war in Spain. This time the final clash at the Battle of Ilorka 211BC.

After the defeat of Hasdrubal Barca in the Battle of Dertosa/Iberia in the spring of 215 BC, the Romans had secured their bases in the north of Ebro. They then proceeded to win over some Iberian tribes, raid Carthaginian lands in the South of the Ebro. Hasdrubal meanwhile had been reinforced by 2 armies, respectively led by his younger brother Mago Barca and Hasdrubal Gisco. These armies fought several indecisive battles with the Scipio brothers during 215-211 BC.

This elephant did not take part in our battle, but it is painted by Bjorn that painted all the minis we used in our game, and I think it´s realy lovely and needed to be shown:)

Back to the game...

The Scipio brothers had hired 20,000 Celt-Iberian mercenaries to reinforce their army of 30,000 foot and 3,000 horse. Observing that the Carthaginian armies were deployed separately from each other, with Hasdrubal Barca and 15,000 troops near Amtorgis, and Mago Barca, Hasdrubal Gisco with 10,000 troops each further to the West of Hasdrubal, the Scipio brothers planned to split their forces.

Publius Scipio decided to take 20,000 Roman and allied soldiers and attack Mago Barca near Castulo, while Gnaeus Scipio took one double legion (10,000 troops) and the mercenaries to attack Hasdrubal Barca. This stratagem would lead to 2 battles, the Battle of Castulo and the Battle of Ilorca to take place within a few days of each other...

OOB Rome
Gnaeus Division: C-in-C, Gnaeus Scipio
4 Small Units of Hastati and principes
1 Small Unit of Triarii
2 Small Unit of Velites
1 Unit of Italian allied infantry (Deployed in the Roman camp)

Abylix Division: General, Abylix (Unreliable Iberian allied)
2 Unit of CeltIberians - Medium infantry warband
1 Unit of Iberians – Medium infantry
1 Small Units of Baleric slingers - Skirmish infantry

OOB Carthaginians
Hasdrubal Barcas Division: C-in-C, Hasdrubal Barca
1 Unit of Lybian veterans - Heavy infantry
1 Unit of allied infantry - Medium infantry
1 Small Unit of allied skirmishers - Skirmish infantry

Masanissas Division: General, Masanissa
2 Small Units of Numidians – Light Cavalry

Hasdrubal Giscos Division: General  Hasdrubal Gisco
2 Units of allied infantry - Medium infantry
1 Small Unit of Baleric slingers - Skirmish infantry

Magos Division:  General, Mago
2 Small Units of Cavalry - Medium cavalry
1 Unit of Elephants – Elephants
1 Small Unit of allied skirmishers - Skirmish infantry (Sub-unit to Elephants)

The Romans started with the main part of the army in march column, with just some Italian allied infantry working on a small camp.

The Carthaginians started ofboard with only Masanissa´s command on the board.

The Carthaginians made some god command rolls and moved on the battle field in force...

The Romans respondend accordingly by by order the column to form a battle line...But it seemed like Abylix command had other thoughts and continued to move away from the threat....treason???

A douptful order by the Romans was to order the Italian Allied in the fortification on the hill to leave it and join the main battle line...

The Carthaginians continued their swift advance, aiming to outflank the smaller roman army...

The romans sent out some skirmishers while the rest of the army awaited just below the hill... they also managed to get the Iberian allied in to a battle line to.

The Carthaginians closed in and started to chase away the roman skirmishline... The romans thought they would let loose the Celtiberian warbans but they refused to move against the Carthaginians...

The Carthaginians right flank with Elephants and Cavalery engaged the Roman leftflank, routing the  Italian allied and turned on the roman legions...

On the other flank the roman at last convinced the celtiberian allied to CHARGE! It all become a bloody battle but the Carthaginian troops managed to endure...

The Carthaginians pressed forward and the Romans battle line started to collapse...

We called it a day sins the roman losses was to greate and they would not have managed to stop the Carthaginians forces.

Our greatest concern was way the roman commanderd did leave their fortification on the hill and did deploy the battle line below the hill iand not on it...

It was realy nice to play hail Caesar again, absolutely one om my favourite rules. Next time ther will be some 15th century gaming during the Kalmar Union War:)

Early Imperial Roman

The last month I have spent most of my painting time on a commission painting, a 15mm EIR army. I don´t use to accept commission jobbs, but sins it was a club member, I reconsidered.

I probably won´t do it again, if it isn´t realy something I feel inspired to paint, at the moment I don´t like to paint 15mm minis... I had rather painted 28mm EIR:)

Anyway, I´m finished so here are a picture...and now I will be over to painting some Anglo-Danish for SAGA:)

AAR Battle of Castulo 211BC

Björn, Fredrik and I have continued our Iberian adventure during the Cartaghinian war using the Hail Caesar rules.

This time I had put together a scenario inspired by the battle of Castulo in 211BC, this was one part of the Battle of the Upper Baetis, the second part are ofcourse the next game...

The romans had devided their army in two parts, one part under command of Publicus Scipio made a swift night march to be able to suprise the Iberian chieftain Indibilis and he´s troops by a dawn attack.

What the roman commander or Player(Fredrik)didn´t know was that there was large amounts of Carthaginian unit in the nearby area, that would arrive as support during the battle...

Order of Battle Rome

Publicus Division: C-in-C, Publicus Scipio
2 Units of Legionaries
1 Small Units of Velites
1 Unit of Italian Auxiliaries

Maximus Division: Legate, Tiberius Fonteus
2 Units of Legionaries
1 Small Units of Velites
1 Small Units of Cretan Archers

Order of Battle Carthage

Indibilis Division: C-in-C, Indibilis (Starting force on table, 1 unit may start in the fortified camp)
2 Unit of CeltIberians - Medium infantry
1 Unit of Iberians – Light infantry
1 Small Units of Baleric slingers - Skirmish infantry

Masanissas Division: General, Masanissa (arrives in turn 3 on Carthaginian left flank)
2 Small Units of Light Horse – Light Cavalry

Hasdrubal Giscos Division: General Hasdrubal Gisco (arrives in turn 5 at the Carthaginian base line)
2 Units of Carthagian - Heavy infantry
1 Small Unit of Carthagian - Skirmish infantry

Magos Division: General, Mago (arrives in turn 7 on Carthaginian right flank)
1 Units of Cavalry - Medium cavalry
1 Unit of Elephants – Elephants
1 Small Unit of Carthagian - Skirmish infantry (Sub-unit to Elephants)

Indibilis trying to get he´s newly awaken troops in a fighting formation...

Turn 2, The Iberians to the left had managed to form some sort of fighting formation in turn 1 and was now avaiting the Roman advance...

The Romans to the right started out slow in the first turn but the following turns they made some swift movement forward the enemys...

Exept for the Cretan Archers that apperentlu haden´t been payed enough and only stroll int their own pace...

The Romans had soon made it to the outskirt of the Iberian Camp, on the Roman right flank their Italian Allies charged a Iberian unit and managed after soem turns of fighting breake the enemy...

At the same time the Carthaginians heard the sound of reinforcements...but due to poor command of Masanissas they didn´t arrive on table...

At last did Masanissas and he´s light Cavalry arrive starting to harass the roman right flank.

In turn 5 the Carthaginians recived even more reinforcements, this time Hasdrubal Giscos slowly arrive with some Heavy Hoplite Infantry...

The Romas that by now knew that they had to win this before to much reinforcements could arrive mad a puch all over the line...

The Romans fought hard in the center there Indibilis Celtiberians put up stiff resistance...

By some reason Hasdrubal Giscos didn´t manage to get he´s troops in to the fight...the Roman commander claimed that it was the newly paid Cretan Archers that stoped them with accurat missile fire...

The Carthaginians recived even ore reinforcements...this time Mago arrived with Cavalry and Elephants... The Roman commander started to get realy stressed...

Final Puch by the Romans... in turn 7 they managed to Breake one of the Celtiberian units, as they breake the baleric slingers alsoe Broke and the last Celtiberians retreated in to the camp...

The Romans followd up to keep the contact and managed after some more intense fighting to finish the last Celtiberian unit of and by that forcing the rest of the Carthaginian army to withdraw...Glory to Rome...

#2 Retire to Chartagena 215BC...

Here are some pictures from tuesday and our 2nd try at my scenario "Retire to Chartagena 215BC". The only real change was that Abylix Division had got one more unit of Celtiberians. i.e 2 of them... and that we tryed a new way of when the game would end, it is all in the scenario in my last post

Map of the set-up. Publicus Division started of board and may enter from turn 1, which it did...

The set-up, Carthaginians to the left and Romans to the right. Maximus Division started to make a swift advance against the Iberians under Abylix command on the hills... and Publicus Division started to wheel left and advance against the Carthaginian right flank under Hasdrubals command.

The Cretan archers managed to temporary drive away the Iberian Light Infantry, that seeked cover in the olive grove. maximus Division ended its swift advance just down the hill...

Björn measure the distance... The Celtiberians on the hill left there uphill possition and charged the Roman legioneres, managed to drive on away... and the Iberians sheltering in the olive grove charged the Cretan Archers that runway...for good...

The 2 battle lines approach each other for the final struggle...

Combat all over...this time the Carthaginians come out on top, forcing the Roman army to flee of the field...

Next time we will play a scenario based on the Battle of Castulo that was the first part of the Battle of the Upper Baetis in 211BC.

Last week we played our 3rd Hail Caesar game down at the club, this time I had writen a small scenario about a engagement that I called Retire to Chartagena 215BC.

We used Björns stuning minis and played on a 120x180cm table with all distances cut to 2/3.

It was a close call but the Chartaginians got out on top and got a marginal victory, we will take a rematch tomorrow...

Order of Battle Rome

Publicus Division: C-in-C, Publius Cornelius Scipio
2 Units of Legionaries
1 Small Units of Velites
1 Small Unit of Tarantines

Maximus Division: General, Maximus Que Vadis
2 Units of Legionaries
1 Small Units of Velites
1 Small Units of Cretan Archers

Order of Battle Carthage

Hasdrubals Division: C-in-C, Hasdrubal Barca
2 Units of Carthagian - Heavy infantry
1 Small Unit of Carthagian - Skirmish infantry
1 Unit of Carthagian – Light Artillery

Abylix Division: General, Abylix (Iberian allied)
2 Unit of CeltIberians - Medium infantry
1 Unit of Iberians – Light infantry
1 Small Units of Baleric slingers - Skirmish infantry

Here are some pictures from the game.

Turn 1 the Carthaginians to the left have good deffensive possitions on a hill and the Romans to the Right make a swift advance...

The Roman legioners and tarantines advancing against the Chartahginian phalanx...

Intensive fighting on the hill between the Iberian and the Romasn...

The Carthaginian Phalanx was to strong this day... the romans retreated in "god" order...

And here are the my scenario, please feel free to try it out.
