1. Rules versus Learning
One of the most fundamental differences between AI project vs software project management lies in how the systems get developed, and that is, software is built on rules while AI needs learning to follow instructions.
In classic software development, backend developers explicitly define logic. If X happens, do Y. Every outcome is the result of hard-coded decisions. This approach gives you full control and predictability. When you encounter bugs, you can trace them to a specific function or line of code, and fix them by rewriting those rules.
AI flips this model on its head. Instead of writing instructions, you feed the system data, and it learns patterns from that data. You’re not defining exact behavior. 3. Requirements versus Feasibility
In traditional software development, the process starts with a clear and structured specification. You define exactly what the system should do and map out every feature, interaction, and edge case. Developers take these requirements and implement them. The assumption is: if you write the correct rules, the system will behave consistently. The major risks are around time, cost, or scope creep, but not whether the problem itself is solvable.
AI projects flip this dynamic. 5. Finished vs Evolving
In software development, a project has a clear definition of “done.” Once a feature or system is shipped, it’s considered complete (aside from occasional updates or bug fixes). Software behaves deterministically, so if it works today, it will work tomorrow, provided nothing breaks downstream.
AI, on the other hand, is never truly finished. Even after deployment, a model’s performance can degrade over time due to changing data patterns, user behavior, edge cases, or external conditions (a phenomenon known as model drift).
