地理情報システム（Geographical Information System）の略。
電子化した地図情報と位置情報をもった統計情報を統合的に扱うシステム。
その機能は、情報の蓄積と検索、地図の可視化と表示、地図の作成と編集、空間情報の解析を主に持ち合わせており、衛星リモートセンシングやGPSの導入とあいまって、近年急速に発展している。
エリアマーケティングやカーナビゲーション・システム（通称：カーナビ）もGISを利用した技術の一つ。
