I've thought of myself as a Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff hybrid for a while now. Someone who needs to believe with both the head and the heart in order to feel comfortable with a decision. Someone with a strong sense of social justice and a highly analytical mind. Someone like Hermione Granger.

Yes, Hermione has the courage of a Gryffindor (a quality I am severely laking in) and the brains of a Ravenclaw, but she also has the heart of a Hufflepuff. That's where S.P.E.W. comes from.

She exemplifies all three houses. I am just two together - Ravenpuff. But I will continue to think and feel that they are the two best houses. And, when I find myself lacking courage, I will ask myself, "Self, what would Hermione Granger do?"

And I will make a list of Ravenpuffs to be proud of.

This timeline is meant to be consistent with cannon; however, I'm pretty new to the Queer as Folk fandom, so let me know about any errors you find. The scenario at the end is heavily influenced by the brilliant writer frayach's fic Letters to Sunshine. (You can find her QaF fics on her lj queerasfray.)

1940 Jack Kinney born (Died season one, 2000, age 60)

1952 Joan born.*

1969 Jack and Joan meet, Joan gets pregnant and they marry.*

1969 Claire born. (From what Brian says at Jack's funeral about Jack not wanting another child, we know that Claire is older than Brian. I put her birth in 1969 instead of 1970 to increase her probable jealousy of Brian as a baby.)
1971 Brian born. (We know the year from the fake tombstone at Brian's thirtieth birthday party.)

* The date of Joan's birth has the greatest possible range of all the events listed. I could put it anywhere between about 1942 and 1952. In the end, I chose the latest possible date because that way Joan can meet Jack when she is 17 and Jack is 29. How could I resist the parallel to Justin and Brian?

Based on Frayach's portrayal of Jack and Joan's marriage in Letters to Sunshine, which is based in turn on what Brian has to say about marriage in general and his particular, I image the following scenario Jack and Joan's meeting.

Joan is a young Catholic school girl who barely knows the facts of life and has never even had a boyfriend. Jack is older, perhaps not much older, but definitely out of his parent's house for several years with a well-paid union job. Jack is charming and seems sophisticated to Joan. She experiences real sexual attraction for the first time and believes Jack's professions of undying love for her. He takes her virginity and she gets pregnant. In contrast to Justin's first time with Brian, I see Jack as taking Joan's virginity with no consideration for her pleasure, even though he has at least enough sexual experience to know what a clitoris is. Once she is pregnant assumes that they will marry and even thinks that her pregnancy will force her parents to consent to her underage marriage.

When Jack learns of the pregnancy he abandons Joan. He has been in this situation before and knows how to make himself hard to find. What he does not know is that Joan has an uncle who is high up in his union. The uncle easily finds Jack via his job and has enough leverage to force the marriage. (As Darcy does to force the marriage of Lydia and Wickham in Pride and Prejudice.)

The above scenario would work with Joan born any time between about 1942 and 1952. If we hypothesis that Joan married at about 17, then the marriage would be between 1959 and 1969. Since we are assuming that Joan is sexually naive when she marries, an earlier date seems more likely as it is harder to imagine quite so innocent a 17 year old in the US in 1969; however, if Joan is working-class Catholic girl from a socially conservative family such nativity becomes plausible to me. Still, I really don't know enough the sociology of the time to be sure.

In the end assuming that Jack and Joan meet when he is 29 and she is 17 fixes the dates. If Jack is 29 when they meet, the meeting must occur in 1969 since Jack was born in 1940, and if Joan is 17 in 1969 she must have been born in 1952.

Yesterday's Daily Mail claimed that David Tennant was considered for the part of Bilbo Baggins. I can't believe that he was considered for very long. He doesn't look at all Hobbity. He would, however, make a damn sexy Elf.

I think I may well read over 50 books a year anyway. I'm going to start keeping a list here, and I will join the LJ community if I have anything of general interest to say.

I think David Tennant's funniest television appearance was hosting the Friday Night Project (S6E02). If you recall, near the beginning of the show Justin Lee Collins and Alan Carr and read some "Who Porn" to David Tennant. His reaction is priceless. The show goes on to feature Mr. Tennant tied to a bed in his underpants, and having his hair ruffled and liking it.
