Despite the enormous popularity of Bharatanatyam, little is known about its social history. This article argues that the main reason for this state of affairs is the embarrassing legacy associated with Devadasis, i.e. temple dancers and courtesans, from whose art form the dance originated. The article sketches the social atmosphere of the so called dance revival and the factors that have changed a despised courtesan art form into a respected national dance. lt discusses aspects of Bharatanatyam that are directly inherited from Devadasis and innovations that have been introduced to the dance as a result of the revival.
