Jejich téměř dvacetileté působení na Institutu ekumenických studií v Praze a na VOŠ Jabok a měnící se místo víry ve společnosti jim umožňuje postihnout i pragmatické aspekty zkoumaného studia, v nichž se protíná historická linie s teologickou reflexí a pastoračním hlediskem. Východiskem pro toto víceoborové zkoumání jim je filozofie výchovy Komenského a jeho pojetí teologie jako cesty rozvoje člověka skrze vzdělávání. Autoři zohledňují kontext doby, v němž se ve zmiňovaných institucích postupně utvářelo pojetí teologie, které v závěru označují jako ekumenicky zaměřenou cestu dialogu, jejímž cílem je přispět k rozvoji člověka v dnešní pluralitní společnosti.
The long-lasting coronavirus pandemic has brought the search for right judgment about situations ... more The long-lasting coronavirus pandemic has brought the search for right judgment about situations and about human responses to them to the forefront of our attention. It has been interesting to see how quickly the clichés about each person having their own truth and their own right to do whatever they like to achieve their dreams have hit their limits and fallen apart, even if those who hold them have often not changed their patterns of behaviour unless forced to do so. We have followed how politicians, like Boris Johnson, only changed at least some of their views regarding the illness by encountering it themselves in a relatively severe form. It seems, however, that even such situations have not led to any kind of more profound personal or societal transformation. A simple example: in Prague public transport a number of people who previously behaved as if they did not breathe through their noses, started to put their masks fully on only when the numbers of new cases of COVID-19 rose so steeply that practically all the passengers were likely to have among their family and friends someone who was ill with the disease. One of the questions we touch in this issue is as to why enlightened self-interest is not the same as right judgment, or, perhaps more precisely, discernment, "the art of choice, which safeguards both the transcendence of Good and the ultimate freedom of the human person. " 2 The concept of discernment that we use for this art comes from Greek. It combines dia (between) and krínein (judge, decide). Diakrínein then means to separate out, to make a distinction, to learn by discriminating, to determine, to decide, to give a judgment. The substantive diákrisis is derived from such an operation, which, according to Franz Brentano, a predecessor of phenomenology, plays a central and mediating role in how we experience the world, relations with other people and creatures, and relationship with the holy and the transcendent. 3 Right judgment does not happen in the abstract. It is not a property one can have. The symbolism of the journey on which one learns to discern runs through different religions and cultures. Abraham has to learn how to discern what comes from God and what from his desires or fears before he becomes the father of a multitude of nations. Moses has to discern between what leads to life and what to death, and only thus can he become giver of the divine law, who knows God by name. But also, for example, Odysseus on his journey has to learn how to discern between good and evil in all the different concrete situations in which he finds himself, before he becomes an archetype of a man of wisdom, of moral and spiritual depth. The different images, indeed, in different variants and interpretations, speak of discernment as a process in which human identity is formed. This is an introductory presentation to the XIIth International Doctoral and Postdoctoral Confere... more This is an introductory presentation to the XIIth International Doctoral and Postdoctoral Conference, organised this time by Charles University Centre of Excellence (Prague, Czech Republic): Theological Anthropology in Ecumenical Perspective (UNCE No. 204052 (HUM/012) in collaboration with Monastery of Bose (Magnano, Italy) in Monastery of Bose in 22-25 May 2019. It shows why the theme: “How Discernment between Good and Evil Shapes the Dynamics of the Human Journey” is approached through the embodied forms of discernment rather than via a conceptual analysis. It emphasizes two necessary sensitivities: one towards the context of the discernment; the other towards the wisdom passed through the ages. Both together help us to see conditions in which one is capable or not capable of a sound discernment, as well as the ever evolving multitude of possibilities supporting and strengthening human intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual growth. To take the challenge, whether ecumenism is or is not a heresy, we get back to the reflection of ... more To take the challenge, whether ecumenism is or is not a heresy, we get back to the reflection of our teaching theology. As the notion of "heresy" implies the concern, whether one is in line with what is regarded as acceptable teaching, we need to clarify why and how our attitude to teaching can be linked with ecu menism. In the course of dealing with these issues, some interesting links to what constitutes ecumenism may come up. We will consider two institutions where theology is taught in relation to ecumenism to suggest that there are some good historical and pragmatic reasons, which would justify that theol ogy should be taught ecumenically. This may not constitute a heresy, but might beg the question whether the use of ecumenism or an ecumenical attitude to teaching theology may be seen as too a pragmatic tool for achieving good ends, e.g. in the area of education during the communist regime, in formation of civic attitudes among today's intellectuals, or in training professional social workers? In response to this question, we will first refer to our recent histori cal experience. On its basis we will show, secondly, that the ecumenical way of teaching theology may contribute to the students' overall professional atti tudes. Yet, thirdly, we will discuss this experience to argue that when following these formational objectives, we do not necessarily loose theology per se from the very point of our enquiry.

Na příkladech výuky teologie, teologické etiky a biblistiky ukazují potřebu respektovat výpověd-ní možnosti vlastních oborů vzhledem k přesažnosti lidského bytí, kterou je třeba i vzhledem k prak-tickým implikacím ve svém oboru autenticky reflektovat a respektovat. RESUMÉ IN ENGLISH The authors of the article take the concept of spirituality as seen by the educators in Social Work and discuss the problem how to use this concept in professional practice when working with people, whose spirituality, at least on the basis of Ethical Codes, should be taken on board by the professionals. All this, in spite of the fact, that spirituality is never conclusively defined for the use in practice in social professions. The lack of consistent appropriation of the concept by experts and academics alike leads the authors to share their own views on the use of spirituality within their own theological and philosophical courses, which constitute a part of professional training for Social Workers. Key points and methods of Theology, Theological Ethics and Biblical Studies are taken as samples to show, that the concept of spirituality has to be acknowledged as aiming deeper than the empirical concepts of psychology or other subjects. On the background of a more fundamental question, whether Christian practice brings about some di... more On the background of a more fundamental question, whether Christian practice brings about some distinctive features to professionalism, the article focuses on interpretation of selected text of Soren Kierkegaard that could be relevant to his concept of work. Its aim is to consider some methodological issues related to the question, whether any distinctive features in his concept of work could enrich the usual concepts of professionalism. A distinction is being made between the concept of work that would come from broadly understood Christendom, and that which might be expected from Kierkegaard’s individual Christian. To overcome a range of difficulties with interpreting Kierkegaard’s text, inspiration is being drawn from Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutic phenomenology.
In this paper two themes will be introduced; subjectivity and personal identity. The reader may b... more In this paper two themes will be introduced; subjectivity and personal identity. The reader may be already familiar with them from e.g. philosophy, psychology, or pedagogy. But my intention is to introduce them in relation to religion and to the role religion may - or may not - play in our lives. Or, better put, in putting us in touch with our identity and our ‘private space’. The term ‘private space’ is understood in opposition to the concept of ‘public space’, meaning here a set of issues through which religion makes itself directly apparent and available to anyone, e.g. through religious symbols and buildings, worship, political, educational and charity activities of various kinds. Both these terms raise many philosophical questions, which cannot be dealt with here. Rather, I intend to offer the reader two interpretations of an impact religion may have on our lives in connection our subjectivity. I will use two thinkers, Nietzsche and Kierkegaard, to offer hopefully a balanced view on what could happen in one’s “private space” once we get in touch with religion. Using these two positions the reader, whether seen as being “religious” or not, should be able to form her or his own more qualified say on how religion can actually influence us.
Příspěvek si klade za cíl naznačit možnou pozitivní souvislost mezi etikou ctností a připravovaný... more Příspěvek si klade za cíl naznačit možnou pozitivní souvislost mezi etikou ctností a připravovaným profesním zákonem o sociální práci v českém prostředí. Pozitivnost této souvislosti není zřejmá. Existuje zde totiž kontrast mezi etikou opřenou o zákon, mnohdy spojovanou s inspirací v Kantově etice, a etikou založenou na ctnostech, jež čerpá z Aristotelovy etiky. Profesní etika přitom bývá koncepčně i fakticky spojována s kantovskou etikou povinnosti a se zákonem, což právě profesní etika neoaristotelské tradice v poslední době zpochybňuje. Znamená to, že přijetí zákona o sociální práci je z pohledu současných diskusí v profesní etice krokem zpět? V příspěvku se pokusím ukázat, že tomu tak být nemusí, a že přínos zákona může být i opačný. Totiž, že profesní zákon může vést k upřesnění, upevnění a legitimizaci potřebných ctností. Díky např. kvalitnímu vzdělání může posilovat určité vzorce „slušně vychovaného“ dobře jednajícího sociálního pracovníka.
Abstrakt Ukazuje se, že přijímání " hodnotově orientované " teorie do praxe sociální práce bývá s... more Abstrakt Ukazuje se, že přijímání " hodnotově orientované " teorie do praxe sociální práce bývá samo o sobě problematické (Fischer,Jandejsek, SP 4/2010) a že i etické teorie své místo a způsob aplikace v českém prostředí ještě hledají (Nečasová,Dohnalová,Talašová SP 3/2010). Jakkoli je rostoucí trend užití etických teorií vítaný, k efektivnímu obohacení praxe sám apel na jejich užití v praxi nestačí. Příspěvek pojedná o vybraných faktorech, které úspěšné propojení praxe s teorií v našem prostředí podmiňují; zejména a) explikace etické teorie jako specifického případu teorie jako takové, b) hlubší porozumění povaze etiky v kontextu kritické reflektivní praxe a c) užší vymezení etického dilematu a problému pro adekvátní užití etické teorie při jejich řešení. V závěru se naznačí některé filosoficko-etické souvislosti, pro něž lze etické teorie chápat jako přínos pro spojení teorie a praxe v sociální práci.

Autoři článku poukazují na různost pojetí spirituality napříč obory a nabízejí příklady vlastních přístupů k osvojení si pojmu spiritualita, uplatnitelného ve své profesní praxi vzdělavatelů v teologicko-filosofických předmětech pro sociální práci. Na příkladech výuky teologie, teologické etiky a biblistiky ukazují potřebu respektovat výpověd-ní možnosti vlastních oborů vzhledem k přesažnosti lidského bytí, kterou je třeba i vzhledem k prak-tickým implikacím ve svém oboru autenticky reflektovat a respektovat. RESUMÉ IN ENGLISH The authors of the article take the concept of spirituality as seen by the educators in Social Work and discuss the problem how to use this concept in professional practice when working with people, whose spirituality, at least on the basis of Ethical Codes, should be taken on board by the professionals. All this, in spite of the fact, that spirituality is never conclusively defined for the use in practice in social professions. The lack of consistent appropriation of the concept by experts and academics alike leads the authors to share their own views on the use of spirituality within their own theological and philosophical courses, which constitute a part of professional training for Social Workers. Key points and methods of Theology, Theological Ethics and Biblical Studies are taken as samples to show, that the concept of spirituality has to be acknowledged as aiming deeper than the empirical concepts of psychology or other subjects. On the background of a more fundamental question, whether Christian practice brings about some di... more On the background of a more fundamental question, whether Christian practice brings about some distinctive features to professionalism, the article focuses on interpretation of selected text of Soren Kierkegaard that could be relevant to his concept of work. Its aim is to consider some methodological issues related to the question, whether any distinctive features in his concept of work could enrich the usual concepts of professionalism. A distinction is being made between the concept of work that would come from broadly understood Christendom, and that which might be expected from Kierkegaard’s individual Christian. To overcome a range of difficulties with interpreting Kierkegaard’s text, inspiration is being drawn from Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutic phenomenology.

The reader may be already familiar with them from e.g. philosophy, psychology, or pedagogy. But my intention is to introduce them in relation to religion and to the role religion may - or may not - play in our lives. Or, better put, in putting us in touch with our identity and our ‘private space’. The term ‘private space’ is understood in opposition to the concept of ‘public space’, meaning here a set of issues through which religion makes itself directly apparent and available to anyone, e.g. through religious symbols and buildings, worship, political, educational and charity activities of various kinds. Both these terms raise many philosophical questions, which cannot be dealt with here. Rather, I intend to offer the reader two interpretations of an impact religion may have on our lives in connection our subjectivity. I will use two thinkers, Nietzsche and Kierkegaard, to offer hopefully a balanced view on what could happen in one’s “private space” once we get in touch with religion. Using these two positions the reader, whether seen as being “religious” or not, should be able to form her or his own more qualified say on how religion can actually influence us.
Příspěvek si klade za cíl naznačit možnou pozitivní souvislost mezi etikou ctností a připravovaný... more Příspěvek si klade za cíl naznačit možnou pozitivní souvislost mezi etikou ctností a připravovaným profesním zákonem o sociální práci v českém prostředí. Pozitivnost této souvislosti není zřejmá. Existuje zde totiž kontrast mezi etikou opřenou o zákon, mnohdy spojovanou s inspirací v Kantově etice, a etikou založenou na ctnostech, jež čerpá z Aristotelovy etiky. Profesní etika přitom bývá koncepčně i fakticky spojována s kantovskou etikou povinnosti a se zákonem, což právě profesní etika neoaristotelské tradice v poslední době zpochybňuje. Znamená to, že přijetí zákona o sociální práci je z pohledu současných diskusí v profesní etice krokem zpět? V příspěvku se pokusím ukázat, že tomu tak být nemusí, a že přínos zákona může být i opačný. Totiž, že profesní zákon může vést k upřesnění, upevnění a legitimizaci potřebných ctností. Díky např. kvalitnímu vzdělání může posilovat určité vzorce „slušně vychovaného“ dobře jednajícího sociálního pracovníka.
Abstrakt Ukazuje se, že přijímání " hodnotově orientované " teorie do praxe sociální práce bývá s... more Abstrakt Ukazuje se, že přijímání " hodnotově orientované " teorie do praxe sociální práce bývá samo o sobě problematické (Fischer,Jandejsek, SP 4/2010) a že i etické teorie své místo a způsob aplikace v českém prostředí ještě hledají (Nečasová,Dohnalová,Talašová SP 3/2010). Jakkoli je rostoucí trend užití etických teorií vítaný, k efektivnímu obohacení praxe sám apel na jejich užití v praxi nestačí. Příspěvek pojedná o vybraných faktorech, které úspěšné propojení praxe s teorií v našem prostředí podmiňují; zejména a) explikace etické teorie jako specifického případu teorie jako takové, b) hlubší porozumění povaze etiky v kontextu kritické reflektivní praxe a c) užší vymezení etického dilematu a problému pro adekvátní užití etické teorie při jejich řešení. V závěru se naznačí některé filosoficko-etické souvislosti, pro něž lze etické teorie chápat jako přínos pro spojení teorie a praxe v sociální práci.
