Rocky S. Tuan (Ph.D., Rockefeller University) was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson University, and Chief of the Cartilage Biology and Orthopedics Branch of the NIH, prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh in 2009 as Founding Director, Center for Cellular and Molecular Engineering, and Professor and Executive Vice Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Professor in the Department of Bioengineering. In 2018, Professor Tuan moved to Hong Kong and became the Eighth Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and also founded the Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at CUHK.
Professor Tuan is an internationally renowned biomedical scientist specializing in musculoskeletal biology, tissue regeneration, stem cells, and biomaterials, and has authored >500 research publications. His significant contributions have been recognized by the Marshall Urist Award for Excellence in Tissue Regeneration Research of the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Carnegie Science Award in Life Sciences, and the Clemson Award of the Society for Biomaterials. He was elected to the fellowships of the National Academy of Inventors, the Chinese Association of Inventions, the American Association for Anatomy, and the Orthopaedic Research Society for his accomplishments in innovation and translational research that bring significant impact on society.
