Few simulation models are developed based on a live case from a company. The models are verified and validated with the historical data from the company and by face validity. Taguchi approach for orthogonal array is used in designing experiments. The experimental settings are executed in WITNESS, a simulation package. It is observed that the variation in level of common process in the system has significant impact on the production quantity and cycle time. The main contribution of this research is determination of the optimal level of batch size in a bottleneck resource under imperfect quality of product and resources breakdown uncertainties. This approach can be generalized to any multistage production system, regardless of the precedence relationships among the various production stages in the system.

The mild steel twisted tape inserts with circular holes of different diameters (i.e., perforation) are used in the flow field. An intensive laboratory study is conducted for heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in the tubes for turbulent flow with various airflow rates. Heat transfer and pressure drop data are engendered for a wide range Reynolds number (1.3×104–5.2×104). Tube wall temperature, pressure drop, air velocity, and its temperature are measured both for plain tube and for tube with perforated twisted tape inserts. Heat transfer coefficients, Nusselt number, pumping power, and heat transfer effectiveness are calculated for both cases. Experimental results showed that perforated twisted inserts of different geometry in a circular tube enhanced the heat transfer rate with an increase in friction factor and pumping power for turbulent flow. The pump...

The winter season (mid-November-mid-February) of the country characterizes by low temperatures, cool air blowing from the west or northwest, clear sky and meager rainfall. Minimum temperature in the extreme northwest in late December and early January sometimes reaches 3°C and day length is about 10 h. The shortness of winter days can be compensated by reducing the heat loss during long nights. The solar air heater is constructed to prevent as much heat loss as possible. In other words, the heating of air is accomplished by maximizing light gain and minimizing heat loss. It is observed that the fabricated solar air heater is working efficiently. The maximum room temperature and the temperature difference from ambient are 45.5°C and 12.25°C for forced circulation and 41.75°C and 8.5°C for natural circulation respectively. The experimental outlet temperatures have been compared with that of theoretical values. Due to its low-cost and simple technology, it is affordable in all aspects, viz. of cost, operation and maintenance by the typical people of Bangladesh.

In literature, the advantages of inclusion of common components in a product family are well established. Unfortunately, most of the works have been conducted via simulation or conceptual thinking. The mathematical models in the premises are not adequate for production, planning and control in multistage ...

Hence the search as well as utilization entails alternative resources. Wind, likewise a natural resource, is a renewable energy, which can be utilized for electricity generation, pumping water and many other applications. The main objective of this research is to fabricate and install a model type vertical shaft windmill resulting in testing of its performance.

Probably, it is more discouraging in the rural areas of the Country. People living in the land are observing serious load shedding due to the generation deficit. The suffering of its citizen could lessen by a proper load management system. In this paper, the authors have designed and fabricated a circuit that can control (on/off) distribution line of a specific region based on the intensity of the daylight (LUX). If the light intensity varies with seasons or some other ...

Taken together, the Earth's biomass represents an enormous store of energy. Since biomass can be reproduced, it is a potential renewable source of energy. Bangladesh is a densely populated country. Large proportions of indigent people residing in both rural areas and suburban, traditionally harvest fire wood, vegetation, animal excreta and agricultural residues for domestic cooking. These methods proved to be unsustainable as fire woods ...

Parts commonality is an ignored topic in most of the studies in milieu of manufacturing resource planning. In real world manufacturing settings, parts commonalities occur in their own ways or can be planned for their preferred happening. The use of common components for different products in a company is important for managing product variety and maintaining competitiveness in this age of mass customization and supply chain struggle. The ever-increasing intricacy in manufacturing systems has generated a demand ...

A simulation model is developed based on a live case from a Malaysian company. Taguchi approach for orthogonal array is used in designing experiments and these are executed in WITNESS. The models are verified and validated by face validity, the historical data from the company and analytical model. The delivery performances, average lead time and work-in-progress (WIP) in the system, are examined for different experimental scenarios. Interaction effects and confirmation tests are also performed. The optimal batch sizes respectively for polishing unit (PU), quality control (QC) and packing stations are 8, 16 and 3 at minimum WIP and lead time. If the company uses these optimal batch sizes, a total of 24% improvement can be obtained. The simulation models show that Gasketing station is the bottleneck and batch size selection in PU station is the most critical decision in the system. The interaction effects are insignificant. The main contribution of this research is determination of the optimal lot sizes under imperfect quality of product and stochastic processing time. This approach can be generalized to any multistage production system, regardless of the precedence relationships among the various production stages in the system.

The throughput of finished products and average production time of the system are examined for various experimental scenarios on the basis of existing manufacturing setup of a company consisting of multiple end products. Simulation package, namely WITNESS is used to simulate/analyze the situations of the production lines. Simulation models are developed, verified and validated with the historical data from the company. It is found that inclusion of common components in manufacturing system is always beneficial over the non-commonality environment, especially i) in uncertain situations, ii) for long procurement lead time of components and iii) when the number of parts increase in the system. T... more This paper presents the results of empirical research conducted during March to September 2009. The study focused on the influence of virtual research and development (R&D) teams within Malaysian manufacturing small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The specific objective of the study is better understanding of the application of collaborative technologies in business, to find the effective factors to assist SMEs to remain competitive in the future. The paper stresses to find an answer for a question "Is there any relationship between company size, Internet connection facility and virtuality?". The survey data shows SMEs are now technologically capable of performing the virtual collaborative team, but the infrastructure usage is less. SMEs now have the necessary technology to begin the implementation process of collaboration tools to reduce research and development (R&D) time, costs and increase productivity. So, the manager of R&D should take the potentials of virtual teams into account.

UGVs are robotic platforms that are used as an extension of human capability. This type of robot is generally capable of operating outdoors and over a wide variety of terrain, functioning in place of humans. So it can be used in national defense to perform reconnaissance and strike missions in urban environments, and by civilian teams to conduct search and rescue operations in hazardous terrain. The software system is used to control the UGV through computer from remote place by using satellite; the software gives it the waypoint/path-location. The robotic arm is used to carry spy weapons or to pick objects for the collection of data or to rescue with the help of its own color recognition system. The system is working efficiently as directed with acceptable precision.

Sharing resources in manufacturing for different products is a vital method of accomplishing this goal. The advantages of using a common process in production are stated in the literature. However, the mathematical models as well as simulation or conceptual models are not sufficient. The main objective of this paper is to develop mathematical models for multiproduct and multistage production under quality and breakdown uncertainties. The idea of the processes commonality is incorporated in the proposed models. The models are validated by: i) primary data collected from a Malaysian company and ii) comparison of the timely requirement schedules of earlier MRP II and the proposed models under stable and perfect production environments. An appreciable convergence of the outcomes is observed. However, the proposed models are carrying additional information about the available locations of the parts in a time frame. After validation, the effects of process commonality on cost, capacity and the requirement schedule under uncertainties are examined. It is observed that use of common processes in manufacturing is always better than the non-commonality scenario in terms of production cost. However, the increase in capacity requirement for commonality designs is higher for an ideal system. In contrast it is less when the system suffers from breakdowns and a quality problem.
