The author traces the development of Cuban detective writing in the light of the work of twentieth century Western European literary critics and philosophers including Raymond Williams, Antonio Gramsci, Terry Eagleton, Roland Barthes, Jean Paul Sartre, Michel Foucault, Jean Francois Lyotard and Jean Baudrillard in order to gain a better understanding of the social and historical context in which this genre emerged. The analysis includes discussion of the broader philosophical, political and historical issues raised by the Cuban revolution. The book concludes that the study of this popular genre in Cuba is of crucial importance to the scholar who wishes to reach as full an understanding of the social dynamics within that society as possible.

‘The US move towards Cuba and Cuba’s move towards the market’
Since 17 December 2014 when the rapprochement between the United States and Cuba was announced, there has been an intensified focus on Cuba in the media. Speculation is mounting that the United States is preparing to lift its 50-year-old economic embargo of the island. This paper places this diplomaic development in the broader context of the process of economic and political liberalisation that has been taking place in the island under the leadership of Raúl Castro and the changing demographics of southern Florida. It argues that, regardless of the outcome of the electoral process in the United States, the convergence between the United States and Cuba will continue.

Dr Wilkinson will examine how, in the early 1990s, Padura Fuentes renovated the Cuban detective genre and then discuss his more recent historical novels. The latest of these, The Man who Loved Dogs, which centres upon the murder of Trotsky, will shortly be published in English by Bitter Lemon Press. Padura Fuentes’ fiction presents a critical insider’s representation of socialist Cuba that challenges orthodox readings of the revolution and its history in the post-Soviet era.

It argues that the two have different goals and different means to achieve the goals that leave both ineffective. It concludes that for the western democracies to have any real influence in Cuba then the EU and the US try to converge their policies in the near future.

There are many perspectives of interest in this relationship but our focus is on ‘Messianic leadership’ (Western 2008). Exploring this we utilise theory from the British Object Relations approach to psychoanalysis citing Melanie Klein and Wilfred Bion in particular, to help explain how this pairing has had a lasting symbolic impact, particularly influencing and possibly contributing to the longevity of Fidel Castro’s leadership.

The article investigates business behaviour in Cuba with particular reference to implicit assumptions relating to socially responsible enterprise, or ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ (CSR) as the term is understood in Western Liberal Democracies. It draws upon a series of interviews with business practitioners and business commentators (both Cuban and non-Cuban residents on the island). The interviews focused on the participants' awareness of business ethics and socially responsible enterprise, and the cultural differences in assumptions and expectations relating to the concept of CSR between the Cuban and non-Cuban interviewees. We find that Cuba at this early stage of tentative marketisation presents a positive role model of socially responsible enterprise. Both the highly regulated State econo...
