Radi- cal environmentalists and a number of Marxists share a special disdain for one of those key principles: economic efficiency. A closer examination of their misgivings, however, suggests that their estimation of the concept is constrained by the role they believe it plays in capitalist production — a nexus between effi- ciency's descriptive understanding and its prescriptive value that needs to be severed if the latter is to be fairly appraised. Once we jettison the notion (held by market advocates) that efficiency is a universal imperative of production that capitalism perfects, as well as the notion (held by many radical environmentalists and Marxists) that it is part and parcel of capitalism's drive toward crisis and self-destruction, we are left with a disarmingly mundane proposition: post-capitalist economies ought to produce effi- ciently, other normative considerations permitting.

Tmagine that the following events characterized your last Saturday afternoon: You drive to a loca... more Tmagine that the following events characterized your last Saturday afternoon: You drive to a local discount department store you've never visited before. Upon entering, and unbeknownst to you, one of the employees runs out to the parking lot with a clipboard. He notes the make, model, and year of your car, your license plate number, and any discernable characteristics of your lifestyle that can be observed from the windows (a child safety seat, cigarette butts in the ashtray, etc.). Meanwhile, also unbeknownst to you, another store employee follows you throughout the establishment, observing and recording which aisles you visit and those you avoid, what items you look at, what you place in your basket, what you scrutinize but return to the shelf, and the like. While paying for your purchase, your credit card is tagged surreptitiously with a microchip that will identify you the next time you visit the store, and will allow the proprietor to match all of the information she's recorded about you on this visit with the information she collects on your next visit-even if you don't remove the card from your wallet to make an actual purchase there. After leaving the department store, you drive to a local grocery store that you visit on a periodic basis. The proprietor greets you at the door with a personal "hello" and hails you by name, though you don't recall having ever been introduced. "I notice that you're just coming from the Sprawl*Mart a few miles from here," he says; "I trust your shopping experience here will be as pleasant as it was there." Baffled by his apparent clairvoyance, you nod politely and turn to the grocery shopping which prompted your visit, only to find that the grocer has already selected the items you typically purchase and assembled them neatly in a shopping cart-a service which, he points out, will give you more time to peruse new items. "Everything's here and in order, including some items you've never purchased but, judging from your previous purchases, I thought you might like to try. I even picked up a few new adult movies along the lines of the kind you and your spouse have been renting from the Blockbuster-half-price this time," he announces for all to hear. "It's just our way of letting you know that we'll be carrying adult movies now. I want you to consider us your one-stop-shopping source for fresh produce and pornography." For many people, the nature of Internet activity has become so commonplace and seemingly so transparent that it would by now be considered overkill to acknowledge explicitly that the scenario above is intended to parody the risks of 197

Scripture as the Occasion for Feminism

Can the Bible make one a feminist? Note that the question here is not, “Can a feminist read (and ... more Can the Bible make one a feminist? Note that the question here is not, “Can a feminist read (and appreciate) the Bible?” Feminists, of course, do read the Bible. While most might find it at least occasionally a challenge to their feminist sensibilities, only some who approach the matter with Christian faith intact—most famously, perhaps, Mary Daly—walk away from it rejecting that faith. Many manage to retain their Christian convictions in spite of what may seem like a consistently dismal portrayal of Scripture’s female characters and its often tacit prescriptions for men in keeping women in line. Still others may even find their faith renewed and fortified by their feminist reading of Scripture, especially those who discover in the text a more feminine representation of God. 1
