While over 100 studies have confirmed stereotype threat effects in performance settings, this project investigates the phenomenon in everyday interactions between patients and healthcare providers. We hypothesize that this form of cross-racial/ethnic and cross-gender anxiety contributes to health disparities by making patients reluctant to accurately disclose health behaviors that may be detrimental to their health.

Extant research neglects how multiple identities, including generational memberships, influence development. This study explores professional identity development of scholars within a multigenerational CoP. Introduction Wenger (1998) states a Community of Practice (CoP) is formed by individuals who share a mutual passion for a concern or topics. He further posits that learning emerges through interactions and shared experiences people have as they negotiate meaning through unique contexts. For PhD students, a CoP may provide space to explore and develop their professional identities and find their scholarly voices (Coffman, Putnam, Adkisson, Kriner, and Monaghan, 2016). However, little is understood about how CoP members’ multiple identities, including their generational memberships, may influence their professional identity development. Therefore, the purpose of this research study is to explore professional identity d...

The second aim of this study was to examine how the entity of the CoP itself evolved over time. Social learning theory and generational theory provided the framework to interpret the data. Through analysis of collective autoethnographic journals, three primary themes emerged:1) psychological safety and trust; 2) diverse expectations became shared interests; and 3) the unique and shared experiences of the CoP members.

Teaching self-management skills is more effective than solely providing information and teaching technical skills at improving health outcomes. Serious games for health provide an opportunity to support learning and health-related behavior change using messages and experiences in an engaging and entertaining format. We developed eSMART-HD with the intention of improving interactions between patients with chronic disorders and their health care providers. This paper describes the factors that we considered when creating eSMART-HD, a serious game for health.
