I am the Head of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group of the Institute of Public Goods and Policies (IPP), part of the largest public research body in Spain (CSIC). Operationalising “Websites”: lexically, semantically or topologically?

Methods to investigate the structure of the Web graph in order to better understand its propertie... more Methods to investigate the structure of the Web graph in order to better understand its properties are of interest to many researchers. The scale and complexity of the Web-page digraph is typically managed by aggregating together or clustering individual Web-pages in order to form "Websites". It is the properties of these Websites which then become the focus of research. The most popular Web-page clustering technique is "lexical" and uses the url syntax in order to assign Web-pages to "Websites". Semantic clustering, that is clustering Web-pages according to the similarity of their content has also been proposed. In this paper we consider a third approach to Web-page clustering which is based on the topological properties of the Web-page within the Web-page digraph. We present the technique and report the results of an experiment to compare the use of url-lexically and topologically determined Websites in two sub-domains, one within the Spanish country level domain and the other within the UK country level domain of the Web.

Webwatching o la medida cuantitativa de la autoorganización de los sistemas de conocimiento hipertextual

Descripción de la presencia de instituciones del sector público de Investigación y Desarrollo de ... more Descripción de la presencia de instituciones del sector público de Investigación y Desarrollo de la Comunidad de Madrid en el año 2000, con el objetivo de dar a conocer una nueva técnica para la descripción del Web, o parte de él, denominada "WebWatching". Se desarrollan una serie de indicadores cualitativos y cuantitativos que permiten describirlo estructuralmente y dinámicamente para poder hacer una evaluación de calidad del mismo. Los resultados obtenidos, incluyendo el análisis comparado con muestreos efectuados en el pasado, muestran un incremento importante en el número de sedes, aunque matizado por tratarse de un sector con fuerte implantación en Internet. Sin embargo, se ha incrementado notablemente el tamaño de las mismas y tanto este valor como el de la visibilidad nacional e internacional (impacto) de las sedes parece correlacionado con la importancia y relevancia de las correspondientes instituciones, lo que indica que la autoorganización de los recursos Web en el entorno académico sigue los patrones del sistema de ciencia y tecnología.
