But access to computer science education and those who work in the tech sector do not reflect the demographic diversity of our state. Between visual effects, animation, sound design, editing, and more, computer science is foundational to the entertainment industry. <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2022\/07\/10-ways-industrial-light-and-magic-changed-filmmaking-and-melted-faces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Find out how one California visual effects company changed movies forever. <\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"swiper-slide\"><div class=\"slide image\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/csforca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-53.png')\"><h4 class=\"slide-title\">Medicine<\/h4><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"swiper-slide\"><div class=\"swiper-slide slide text\"><h4 class=\"slide-title\">Medicine<\/h4><div class=\"slide-body\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Computer science has led to some of the biggest innovations in medical history like sequencing the human genome, and it also helps doctors and patients everyday with electronic medical records - making healthcare management more effective and efficient for everyone. <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caltech.edu\/about\/news\/3m-center-to-advance-at-home-health-care-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right now, California is leading the advancement of at-home-care technology with computer science.\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"swiper-pagination\"><\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"swiper-button-prev\"><\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"swiper-button-next\"><\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"building-momentum-for-computer-science\">Building Momentum for Computer Science<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Since 2012, CSforCA has worked to ensure equitable access to high-quality computer science teaching and learning opportunities across California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">Before CSforCA, access to and participation in computer science education in California was severely lacking.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u2022 In the 2008-2009 school year, fewer than 10% of students in grades 7 through 12 had taken a computing course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u2022 Across the state, only 35% of high schools offered CS courses in 2008-2009. Two-thirds of high schools offered no computer science courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u2022 In 2010, only 2,793 California students took the Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u2022 In 2010, 230 of the students who took AP Computer Science were self-identified as Latinx, and just 33 were Black.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">Since then, we\u2019ve made meaningful progress. As of 2022:&nbsp;<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u2022 42% of California\u2019s high schools offer computer science courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u2022 34% of schools across the state offer a core CS course, only 14% offer a specialized course and 13%    offer an Advanced Placement course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u2022 Nearly 30,000 students participated in an Advanced Placement CS course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button aligncenter is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"http:\/\/csforca.org\/the-data\/\">Check out what computer science education currently looks like in your district \u2192<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But there\u2019s still a lot of work to be done to achieve equity in CS education:&nbsp;<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Of the students who took AP CS courses in 2019, just 561 were Black and 44 were Indigenous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Schools serving low-income communities are 3x less likely to offer core CS courses and over 2x less likely to offer Advanced Placement courses than schools serving high-income communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Rural schools are 2x less likely to offer CS courses than urban schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 While girls comprise 49% of the population in California high schools, just 30% of students taking CS courses are girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"history-of-csforca\">History of CSforCA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since our Coalition\u2019s founding in 2012, CSforCA has led the charge toward computer science equity in California.&nbsp;Click below to view a timeline of our history and accomplishments: <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"pdf-block\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/csforca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/CSforCA_milestones_timeline_Dec202387.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t<div class=\"pdf-block-image\">\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/csforca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/CSforCA_milestones_timeline_Dec202387-pdf-791x1024.jpg\" alt=\"CSforCA Timeline PDF Preview\"\/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"pdf-block-body\">\n\t\t\t<h5 class=\"pdf-block-title\">CSforCA Timeline<\/h5>\n\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/csforca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/CSforCA_milestones_timeline_Dec202387.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"pdf-block-link\">Download ><\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-future-of-cs-in-ca\">The Future of CS in CA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>CSforCA is working for a future where <em>all<\/em> students&nbsp;have access to high-quality computer science education \u2014to both equip students with the critical thinking skills they need to thrive, and prepare students for a 21st century, digitized world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We will achieve this by:<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Expanding access to professional development, so that more educators are prepared to teach CS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Continuing to partner with Local Education Agencies (LEAs) to pilot equity-focused programs that bring CS education to minority communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Working with policy-makers to increase funding for computer science education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4.
