Well... not *completely*. Public posts appear sporadically 'round here, and my writing is generally unlocked, but most of my posts are f-locked. I'm a pretty friendly sort though, so just drop a comment here if you'd like to be added. If you'd like to know what you're getting yourself into before commenting, I'd recommend checking out this handy introductory post.

[I'll assume that you've already checked out my user Info. :)]. Cheers!

Wow, it's been a while.

It's distinctly eerie, poking around here. My flist is mostly comms - which is, honestly, why I'm poking my head in at all. mini_wrimo starts today, and I wandered in though my abandoned front door to check the comm. I miss this place. Well, I miss a place that hasn't been here for years. I really miss people, so many fen who have vanished.

Ugh.

Let's try this again.

Dear Net of Stars, as far-flung as you might be, I am thinking of you. In this moment, I'm sending you love and gratitude. I'm sending you understanding and hugs, should you need them. It's been a long time, but you are in my heart and in the corner of my smile.

There's a lot I want to say, but the words are locked away. Too long spent obsessively reading articles and scanning the Facebook feed most likely. I couldn't come up with anything for that crew - I don't want to defend my terror, thanks- and the words I wrangled for tumblr were disjointed at best. Disjointed is the best I can hope for today. I'm just so exhausted.

Perhaps tomorrow.

Until then, know that I love you all.

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

Well, I've done this a few times already - hi new folk, HI - so I'm technically done with this challenge. But I'm planning on poking around a bit later.

It's prolly time for a proper intro post update, isn't it? It's been ages, after all, and I've only just recently wandered back to journal-life. Hmm. I never really know what to put in those posts. What do people want to *know*?

More directly snowflake-related - did anyone do a love meme as part of day six's challenge? Yesterday got a bit busier than expected, and I haven't gone trawling through comments. Oh, and I shall have yesterday's challenge up later too. Ugh. RL, why must you take up so much TIME?

And speaking of comments - I'll be getting on that later this evening [YAY FOR FRIDAY OMG THIS WEEEEK]

And since it's Friday, it's Dino Time!

 photo 6439271395_3cd603fa72.jpg

Yup, I skipped the concrete dinos today, because cookies seemed much more appropriate. :) I hope you have a lovely weekend, gang!

In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

St. Happenstance Show and Tell

I challenge y'all to share either 1) where you create or 2) what inspires you. And by share I mean SHOW US. Take photos of your workspace or the view that always gets the creative juices flowing! Give us links to paintings, sculptures, poetry that spark you! Draw a picture! Or a map! Whatever it is that gets -or keeps- you going, please share.

I shall post some of my talismans later, once I'm out of work*. ;)

Thank you!

*First round of my personal shinies are posted in the comments below.

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Draft a critical essay about a particular media. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of a Broadway show, a movie, a concert, a poetry reading, a museum trip, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Compose some limericks, haikus, free-form poetry, 5-word stories. Document a particular bit of real person canon. Take some pictures. Draw a stick-figure comic. Create something.

Okay, this post is a more of a 'watch this space' post. I've actually dug-out my surprising meager puppet/finger puppet collection, and am trying to figure out what kind of puppet show to do. I am leaning towards Meta with Ralph the Dinosaur and friends, but am at a bit of a loss as to what *specifically* I should talk about. Tropes? Types of fic? A bit about Creature Features in the horror genre? My parents, who are the Most Helpful, suggested a discussion of Jurassic World, but I'm not sure of Ralph's stance on the Jurassic Park series. [They also suggested writing a sonnet about Jurassic World, since I have a William Shakespeare in my collection. But - ahahahahahaha... um, no.]ARGH.

Gang, what do you think? Any suggestions? Also - can a pickle count as a finger puppet, per say?

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

The problem I had with Day Three's task was not in finding work to share. It was in narrowing down the possibilities. As it stands, I ended up with three categories instead of three individual works. There are things I love about most of my public work - and yes, things that I hate or that make me cringe, but that's part of what makes them lovable. Flaws and awkwardness make the good and graceful bits shine all the more. And I know that each of these pieces are the best I was capable of at that time. Creative milestones are important to celebrate too.

Er, Without further ado...
A few of my favorite thingsCollapse )

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

I feel guilty about asking for anything after being essentially MIA for ages. But I am determined to complete this challenge so:

1)Icons. Since there's been a major shift in the fannish community, I have no idea who is still making icons. And I really need to update my shinies. Can you point me towards icon artists and comms? I'd be ever so grateful. I'm looking for the following: [fandoms]Daredevil, Jessica Jones, MCU [Sam Wilson, Natasha Romanoff, a good Bucky icon.], Sense8, SGA, Star Trek TOS, Crimson Peak, Star Wars [including but not limited to TFA], NEW BANDOM ICONS, Marvel women in the more current comics, Luna Lovegood, [non-fandom] drive-ins/movies, roadside attractions, illuminated manuscripts, neon signs, New Orleans, women writing, art from old horror movies, art in general. The usual suspects know what I'm into; new faces, you can check my interests list should you have questions past the list here. :)

2)Longfic Recs. I have 1 1/2 to 2 hours worth of a bus commute every weekday, and desperately need fic I can dump onto my ipad. I read pretty widely, but have a special interest in SGA longfic [I know, it's taken me forever to get into it] and new stuff [or under-appreciated old stuff] in Buffy/Angel/Firefly and in Bandom. I'm also in the midst of a LotR marathon and could really sink my teeth in some Middle Earth [not-The Hobbit, but the Fellowship] stories. Is anyone writing longfic in Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Sense8, Star Wars? Seriously, I'm willing to give anything a go.

3)Bill Weasley, where are you? I KNOW that there must be stories about Bill Weasley and his adventures as a curse breaker. It's like Indiana Jones, but with magic! The appeal is obvious! Where are the shinies? Help a bird out, would ya? And if someone decided to oh WRITE a story like that, overjoyed does not begin to cover my response.

There are about other things that I want to ask about/for -favorite fic that y'all have written, what non-fandom things you're currently super passionate about- but I'm pretty sure that those will get covered later in the challenge.

THANK YOU!

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Sliding in under the wire, as I've been thinking and thinking and then OVERthinking the topic. :P

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The past few years I've seen various folk on my reading list do this challenge and it's always looked like fun. Last year I dipped my toes in a bit, but came into the challenge too late to really participate. I promised myself I'd participate THIS year. And so I am. :)

But that's the tippy-top of the Why iceberg.
yammering T cutCollapse )

I think that covers what I hope to accomplish by participating in this challenge. But if not: I want to re-connect. With fandom, with my fannish folk. I want to connect - make new friends, get excited about new fandoms and fanworks and ideas. Basically, it's all about building elaborate structures out of virtual tinkertoys. Same old, same old. :D

Boy oh boy, it's been a while since there have been photo safaris 'round these parts. Or in general, really. When I went to dump these photos into my photo program, there were pics from last Xmas still on the camera, and the last time I took the camera out *at all* was apparently at the end of May. Yikes! So away we go, recording the Queen City's day-to-day once more.

What have you been up to?
[The advice adjacent and sympathy remix]

Please, darling fresh-fledged heart,
allow uncertainty its mouthfuls. Risk cliff edge, trust empty skies. Fly.

Me? Oh, my work’s been brambles lately. All neglected pricking, thumbs
to forefingers, earned pinching back my own unruly. On best days I
introduce green dried briars to old fires, fresh-raked -
myself, well-banked. (Though still more Caliban than Prospero.)

I’m less than lost, more than found and often mis-cast
a smile and good morning seen, but the shadow? Neither
man or beast – preferring edge stepping and blurred lines to centers
of attention, wheel hubs, or arrowhead and knife point biting a bullseye.

Wealth stays bound in feathered cloaks, rust, copper coin,
and glitter - holographic disguise for weeds growing in nail-beds. But
taste – buds keep chlorophyll ever present, between flesh and sheltering bone.

And you?

Today is turning out to be a far more hectic day at Tiny Office than expected, so this is just a drive-by.

Thing One:

I'm sure that y'all have seen [personal profile] elf's post,That MeFi Thing - Emotional Labor. Or maybe you've seen the article and the resulting metafilter thread elsewhere? If not... well, I've been going through the thread for days now [it's particularly good commute reading], and found it incredible useful/helpful/fascinating. There's a whole 'nother post to be made about what I've learned about myself through the reading, but that's going to be a long meander and requires quite a lot of baggage unpacking. So, I guess that means you've been warned?

Thing Two:

I'm going to be participating in August Writing again this year. It's just what it sounds like - 'Write something, anything every day in August' - and I'm basically following in [personal profile] bodhifox's wake here [that is, he said he was going to do it, and it sounds like a good idea to me, so I'm doing it too]. So, don't be surprised by randomly appearing fic and such. I'm going to start this all with the prompts y'all left. :) Also, if you wanted to join in, feel free. We can have a super casual St. Hap's situation, if you'd like.

I shall be back later with more words. Have a lovely Blue Moon, gang!

State of the T is pretty much 'half-frozen, pallid sprouting bean, found when last winter's debris is moved'. But at least the debris - a thaw-sodden piece of plywood, I think - has been moved! Time to get up off the ground.

Hi. I missed you, gang.
It's been rough going, trying to shake off the fall-out from February. But the sun's coming out, the temperature is climbing back to Reasonable and there are buds appearing on trees. Spring got a ton of motivation, big oozey mess of a season that it is. Here's hoping that creative soup will prod me along too.

I've not really been on the journal platforms for... what, two months? There's been a lot of tumblr and binge-reading at Ao3, and erratic stabs at FB interaction, but that's kind of it. I have no idea what all's been going on with y'all, y'all. Are you well? Started any new jobs/businesses/hobbies/projects of awesome? Any cool adventures or drastic changes in hair color? Do tell. :)

*hugs and hugs and hugs*

Well, it looks like I'm taking my 15 year old step-niece to Fall Out Boy in June. So I have that adventure to look forward to. :D

Bandom: the Family Business. Heh.

T-Padre asked if this was one of my bands. I'd say it's reassuring that he's paying attention, but I've hammered out the physiology of vampires and werewolves with this man, so he knows exactly what kind of trouble I get into on my own time. I'm more impressed that the name registered - he's TERRIBLE at remembering names.

Wow, is my brain not working well at the moment. This is purely do to lack of sleep/winter intolerance reasons, not the monkey-go-round - after their flare up last week the mental primates have been keeping themselves entertained elsewhere, thankfully. I think I've been offering good distraction with Jedi fic - I stumbled into a friggin' EPIC bit of awesome last Saturday, and have been readingreadingreading ever since. I wish the prequels were as amazing as this fic series, gang. My faith and love of Jedis has been restored, which I wasn't sure was possible. Looks like I have to go dig out my wee laminated Qui-Gon Jinn for the inspiration board, and move Yoda from the Grimbracken's library to somewhere more prominent. Which seems very appropriate, considering that DO THE WORK is one of this year's axioms.

That's why I've been poky with replies, btw - brain is stuffed full of Space Adventure, and fuzzy from not enough sleep. No monkey howls though [I'm so pleased with that, I have to repeat it], so I'm okay with slow thinking, otherwise. This time of year is such a tightrope walk. I really do need to figure out a way to spend January and February where there's warmth and sun. But I digress. Replies shall be trickling out soon.

What is the internet equivalent of sea legs? Because that's what I'm still working on re-acquiring.

I hope everyone is having a decent week. <3
