The main aim of the survey was to understand the situation by exploring the knowledge and experiences of blood donation in both rural and urban contexts. The survey was carried out mostly among non-medical and medical college students in Kathmandu, and among college teachers in Kathmandu and some ethnic groups outside Kathmandu, mainly in Chitwan, Kaski, and Tanahun districts. The results show that only 15% of non-medical respondents had donated blood, by males more than by females, mostly by those living in Kathmandu. Also, about one-third of medical respondents had donated blood. Similarly, most had donated blood only once, often at the suggestion or insistence of somebody or only when required for one’s family member. This study also suggests that the prevalence of blood donation is low in both urban and rural areas.
