The confluence of the Krishnai-Dudhnoi (Mornai) rivers with the Brahmaputra is one of the regions... more The confluence of the Krishnai-Dudhnoi (Mornai) rivers with the Brahmaputra is one of the regions of archaeological and historical importance in the lower Brahmaputra Valley. The site of Sri Surya Pahar, located within this region, is an important archaeological site that has yielded historical period (CE 400–1300) brick structures, rock-cut sculptures, rock-cut stupas, dressed stone architectural members, potsherds, and terracotta artefacts. Besides, archaeological remains belonging to different historical periods have been unearthed at many localities around the Krishnai-Dudhnoi confluence from time to time, either as chance discoveries or through archaeological investigations. However, recurrent floods, riverbank erosion, and landslides have had disastrous effects on these archaeological remains. Hence, a field survey of sites in the Krishnai-Dudhnoi-Brahmaputra confluence was undertaken by a team with a rescue archaeological approach to document the sites and features that are under serious natural and anthropogenic threats. This paper discusses the findings of the survey and their significance for the historical archaeology of the region.

QALEH QAMCHOQAY: AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION INTO A DEFENSIVE CASTLE IN THE PROVINCE OF KURDISTAN, IRAN

The cultural materials recovered from the Castle of Qamchoqay in Kurdistan Province during the pr... more The cultural materials recovered from the Castle of Qamchoqay in Kurdistan Province during the preliminary exploration brought to light certain remarkable facts. The subsequent archaeological survey in the summer of 2019 that aimed at mapping the entire site and documenting its material remnants led to the discovery of a man-made 'room', fragments of stairways of the castle, a few water reservoirs, a rock-cut tunnel, mortar, potteries, and scattered bricks. The historicity of the castle is traced back to the Sassanid period. The castle was resettled in the Middle Islamic period. The defence wall was evidently built during the Sassanid era, whereas the upper portion of the castle seemingly built over an early structure belongs to the last phase of the Middle Islamic Period. This paper endeavours to introduce the readers to the architecture and other aspects of the Qaleh Qamchoqay.

This paper presents the results of the documentation and analysis of the pottery and terracotta c... more This paper presents the results of the documentation and analysis of the pottery and terracotta collections from the excavations conducted at Cotton College in Guwahati during 1990-1992 by the Directorate of Archaeology, Govt. of Assam. The collection is presently housed at the Assam State Museum and Anthropological Museum of Cotton University. Although the archaeological digging was conducted for two seasons, the excavations have brought to light some important archaeological vestiges in the form of brick structures, pottery, terracotta sculptures, stone architectural pieces and other clay and stone objects. Considering the similarity of the pottery in terms of types, shapes, decorations and technological features and other archaeological remains of stone architectural pieces and brick structures, the archaeological site at Cotton College Campus can be considered as an extension of the Ambari archaeological site.

A series of excavations was conducted by were conducted at Ambari by Gauhati University, the Directorate of Archaeology and the Directorate of Museums, the Government of Assam; and the Archaeological Survey
of India. This paper is an attempt to contextualize and analyze the archaeological materials found in the Guwahati area which showcase close links with the premier site of Ambari.

The study of ethnographic pottery making tradition has proven to be extremely useful for understa... more The study of ethnographic pottery making tradition has proven to be extremely useful for understanding the ceramic technology in archaeological and historical context. Assam and other states of Northeast India have yielded handmade pottery from Neolithic period onwards. Presently, the art of pottery making is traditionally practiced by Kumar and Hira potters. The present paper is aimed at documenting the pottery making tradition among the Hiras of Mornoi in Goalpara district of Assam. It attempts to record the entire process from collecting and storing of clay till the final technical stage of firing. Simple utilitarian pottery without much designs and paintings manufactured without wheels by hands with the help of beaters, paddles and dabbers are clues for understanding early Neolithic handmade pottery of the region. The social background of the Hira potters in the locality is also highlighted.

This chapter presents a critical evaluation of the current status of archaeological research in t... more This chapter presents a critical evaluation of the current status of archaeological research in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR), with a special focus on the borderland areas. It provides a comprehensive analysis of archaeological investigations conducted in the IHR and highlights the importance of systematic documentation, conservation, and promotion of archaeological sites across the region. These sites have often been explored in isolation and not been examined from the perspective of a unified One Himalaya approach. This paper explores the unique significance of borderland areas in relation to their archaeological sites and shared heritage. It proposes suggestions and strategies to enhance the study and promotion of Borderland Archaeology, outlining potential outcomes for national identity, integrity, and shared heritage.
